MUSIC
The Gravy-House Storytellers presents mouth-watering musical marmalade from the 1920’s through the 1940’s. ‘The Gravyhouse Storytellers’ is a small-combo swing ensemble from Asheville, NC. The storytellers perform authentic arrangements of Pre-WWII-era Blues Shoutin’ and Swing tunes. Their repertoire favors ‘mid-tempo blues’ and is appropriate for Lindy, Balboa, and East/West coast alike.

BLUES
Band finished and you’re not done dancing? You’re in luck… stick around for our vintage blues hour! Continue dancing to DJ’d music until the bar kicks us out. $2 suggested donation for those coming just for the blues hour.

CLASSES
7pm: Continuing Class: Intermediate Partner Charleston w/ Sparrow & Jean

We will be working on side by side variations for the first two weeks, tandem entrances, exits, and variations for weeks 3 and 4, and for the 5th week of October we will be doing a special class on switching and stealing- super useful for jams and social dancing!

“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************

8 pm: Core Class: Intro to 8-count Lindy Hop w/ Sparrow & Keith

Learn the foundations of the 8 count Lindy Hop, the high energy dance from Harlem that swept the nation and then the globe. Starting from the very beginning, breaking down the steps and rhythms in easy to understand ways, Keith and Sparrow will get ya on the dance floor and having fun in no time. No partner required and drop in friendly, though of course you’ll learn the most if you start at the beginning of the month and stay till the end!

“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).
*************************

GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.

“Masterful players on a Grail-like search for the cosmic heart of California.” – MOJO
“…good-time music on an end-times mission.” – ROLLING STONE

“…trailblazing a wonderfully refreshing slice of ‘Rock N Roll’ music.” – AQUARIUM DRUNKARD

“…a celebration of how American musical traditions can be at once honored and psychedelically expanded.” – UNCUT

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood are on tour in support of their latest studio album ‘Barefoot In The Head.’ In the middle of one of their most prolific periods to date, the band is riding a creative wave with a slew of studio and live records coming out amidst a rigorous tour schedule that only seems to fuel their fire even further. Their stellar new album, ‘Barefoot In The Head,’ marks the CRB’s third studio release in just two years, and it finds them pushing boundaries and breaking new ground with more joy and wonder than ever before. Overspilling with stunning musicianship and infectious energy, the album showcases the continued growth of Robinson’s songwriting partnership with his bandmates: guitarist Neal Casal, drummer Tony Leone, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, and bassist Jeff Hill. It revels in the kind of adventurousness that can only come from five artists tuned into the same sonic wavelength.

‘Barefoot In The Head’ follows last year’s critically acclaimed LP, ‘Any Way You Love, We Know How You Feel,’ and its companion EP, ‘If You Lived Here, You Would Be Home By Now.’ It opens with the Americana funk of “Behold The Seer,” which sounds like something of a mission statement for the CRB as Robinson sings, “If you want to keep your engine humming / Keep your eyes wide ahead and don’t look back.” On the dreamy “She Shares My Blanket,” Robinson crafts cinematic scenes from a winter love affair in the mountains, while elegant pedal steel added by special guest Barry Sless on “Blonde Light Of Morning” casts a warm, romantic haze and “Blue Star Woman” sounds like T-Rex dressed in overalls living on a West Coast commune. Throughout the album, Robinson and the band deftly intertwine country, blues and psychedelia, even channeling freewheeling 60s’ folk on “Hark The Herald Hermit Speaks,” a breakneck stream of consciousness that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. On the English psych inspired “Glow,” which Robinson calls “one of the most special things I’ve ever done in the studio,” The CRB are joined by the celebrated sarodist Alam Khan (son of the legendary Ali Akbar Khan).

“The music that we make, the concerts that we play, it’s this world we’ve created for ourselves and our people,” explains Robinson. “We want everybody to understand that no matter where you are in your life that you can always be barefoot in your head. There’s always this other place you can go. Is that place it real? That’s your decision to make, what you’re going to let be real to you.”

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood emerged in 2011 by playing close to 50 shows over nine weeks in California before ever leaving the Golden State or officially releasing music. Their introduction on the national stage came in 2012 when they’d release not one, but two acclaimed full-length albums within a few months of each other. Critics hailed their sprawling debut, ‘Big Moon Ritual,’ as a revelation, with The Independent raving that Robinson had “finally found the ideal vehicle to indulge his taste for ‘Cosmic California Music.’” The reviews were similarly ecstatic for its immediate follow-up, ‘The Magic Door,’ which was praised by Relix as “classic rock in the finest sense.” The band’s epic tour schedule brought their shimmering acid-Americana around the world for a staggering 118-date tour, firmly establishing the CRB as the new standard-bearers of the psychedelic roots torch. In 2014, they returned to the studio for ‘Phosphorescent Harvest,’ a masterful collection that showcased the blossoming songwriting partnership between Robinson and Neal Casal. Rolling Stone raved that the album was “electrifying…boast[ing] a vintage rock vibe that’s at once quirky, trippy, soulful and downright magnetic,” and Guitar World called it “a treasure trove of soul that advances the band’s bluesy, kaleidoscopic sound.”

With a steady flow of new studio albums and live recordings plus a near non-stop touring schedule, including a growing number of sold out shows, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood are proving themselves among the most prolific rock and roll bands of their time. The quintet have honed their kinetic chemistry and immersive sound into a singular vision, which Uncut Magazine calls, “…a celebration of how American musical traditions can be at once honored and psychedelically expanded.”

Mirah w/ Tomberlin at The Mothlight

Mirah at The Mothlight
w/ Tomberlin
October 23rd
Doors 7pm
Tickets: $13adv,
https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1748171?utm_medium=bks

Brooklyn-based Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn (b. 1974, Philadelphia) creates incorruptible independent pop music defined by her graceful songwriting and adventuresome recordings. Mirah has released over a dozen solo and collaborative recordings on K Records, Kill Rock Stars and various US domestic and foreign independent labels while touring the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand many times since 1998. Pitchfork has praised her “incredible voice—a versatile coo that can flit from low, sultry tones to high, airy falsetto in one breath.”

Mirah’s 6th full-length solo record, ‘Understanding’ (releasing September 7, 2018 on Mirah’s own imprint, Absolute Magnitude Recordings) is a conscientious return to her early unconventional recording process. The record embraces the spirited imperfection and rawness inclusive of rough first takes, natural room sounds, and a fair amount of broken equipment. Written and recorded in a time of political and personal upheaval – family illness and the death of a dear friend, all in the shadow of the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath – ‘Understanding’ presents an even hand of political themes, love songs and introspective rallying cries.

Frequent collaborators of the years have included well-known producers Phil Elverum (The Microphones/Mount Eerie), Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs), Eli Crews (The Julie Ruin), Tucker Martine, Guy Sigsworth and Calvin Johnson, songwriters and composers such as Thao Nguyen, Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Lori Goldston, Susie Ibarra, Jherek Bischoff, Tara Jane O’Neil and Khaela Maricich (The Blow) and visual and media artists such as Anna Oxygen of Cloud Eye Control, Britta Johnson and Ginger Brooks Takahashi.

The Corn Maze raises $100,000 for the agency every year, and we have come to rely on this event to support our programs,” says Davis-Bryant. “I never thought I’d have a job in which I relied on a field of corn growing! Changing up how we planted the corn field meant a lot to us, but was also a risk. I am proud of the agency for engaging in this kind of risk taking. The corn has grown beautifully, and we can be proud of the ways we have improved the event for the long-term sustainability of our land.
This year, Eliada is also adding beer and cider sales to the makeup of the event.

This option, available to guests only on weekends (Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sunday afternoons), will help the agency increase revenue to support the growing needs children and youth face in our community. Eliada is excited to work with local and national partners to provide an array of beer and cider options!
