Amazing Glaze with Gabriel Kline

Do you hate glazing? I mean, do you really HATE glazing? Have you experienced the frustration of making a beautiful piece, then ruining it with a flawed, or perhaps worse, boring glaze? Would you rather spend your time doing just about ANYTHING else, even cleaning your studio? Then this is the class for you! Join Gabriel each Friday as he demystifies the techniques that will help you learn to love the glazing process, achieve more dynamic results, and get your work noticed. Topics will include under and overglaze decoration, glazing large and delicate work, spraying glazes, and multiple firings. We will also examine the basics of formulating, mixing, or altering a glaze.
Level: Seasoned Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced

Have you ever wanted to scale up the size of your work, but weren’t sure how? The sky is the limit in this class, so let’s go big! Join Mac McCusker as you learn to make large, freestanding floor vases with slabs and coils. You can then theme your piece by adding imagery to the leather hard clay. Demonstrations will include experimenting with carving, additive methods, surface design, sgraffito, underglazes, and the use of decals to achieve a visually stunning finished piece. All skill levels are welcome.

You’ve asked for it, and this session we are pleased to announce that a live model, figurative sculpture class will be returning to Odyssey ClayWorks! Working from a live model each week, students will hone their understanding of basic anatomy, proportions and the mechanics of movement in 3 dimensions. After first creating multiple fast sketches in clay to work out technique, students will then advance to a longer-term sculpture based on a single pose, with more attention to detail. Please join us for this exciting opportunity to work with decorated sculptor, Leonid Siveriver.

Come to this event to learn about pitching, and leave with your own pitch video ready for the world to see. Trey Scott, former CBS News Reporter turned filmmaker, will present the fundamentals of what you need to know in order to communicate your idea to the broader public – and help you create a pitch that is truly attention-grabbing and unique. Equipped with the theory of how to develop a great pitch, the latter part of the session will provide you with an opportunity to capture your own keystone pitch on the new WatchPitch platform: live, on-site, in the pitch booth with your phone or iPad.
Earth Equity Advisors’ Annual Speaker Series returns for its fifth year on October 18 at 6pm. Pete Krull is moderating the discussion with Nzinga Shaw and Betsy Moszeter as they discuss the importance and benefits of inclusion, both in finance and across every industry.

Tile murals can beautifully enhance your kitchen, bathroom, or outside sidewalks and paths. Students will design their own ceramic tiles using the slab roller and press molds, then incorporate ideas and imagery through carving, sgraffito, Mishima, and ceramic decals. Underglazes, glazes, and firing will be covered. Finally, we will learn how to install these finished pieces indoor or outdoor.

Looking for a way to get creative and messy after school? Always wanted to play around on the potter’s wheel? Join Halima this fall and discover the FUNdamentals of throwing. In this class, students will learn to center clay on the wheel and the essential techniques used to craft cups, mugs, plates and bowls. Students will create and decorate their functional masterpieces and leave with a set of handmade pots to use at home!
Tuition: $225
The Garcia Project will perform a full, classic Jerry Garcia Band show setlist!
The Garcia Project is the only nationally touring Jerry Garcia Band tribute that performs full, classic Jerry Band set lists from 1976-1995. We have been called by many, “the DSO of JGB”. With proper, era-specific equipment and arrangements, The Garcia Project brings the fans back in time to relive the classic Jerry Garcia Band concerts in their entirety.

Join Cayce as he demystifies the process step-by-step, with plenty of one-on-one instruction. Techniques demonstrated will include throwing hollow, making a tight fitting lid, and plenty of variations for knobs and handles. Soon you will be creating beautiful, functional casseroles to use and enjoy for years to come.

Effective search engine optimization (SEO) – or luck! – has drawn a potential customer to your website. Now what? Collider member Jan Dutton, CEO of Prescient Weather, will discuss his top tips and lessons learned from a summer of working on search engine optimization and customer conversion. “Calls to Action,” tools for capturing customer contact information, and his experience using a customer relationship management system will be among the key topics covered.
Asheville Butoh Collective and the Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre are honored to present the 12th Asheville Butoh Festival from October 25-28. The 2018 festival will feature international guest artists, Seisaku and Yuri Nagaoko as well as a solo retrospective by festival co-founder, Julie Becton Gillum.

One-Day Workshop
Saturday, October 27
9:30am- 4:30pm
Experience the drama, amazement and instant gratification of Raku in this one-day firing workshop. Bring up to 5 bisque fired pieces (vertically oriented vase and cylinder forms up to 12 inches in height preferred). We will glaze the pieces using a variety of crackle, iridescent luster and matte glazes and fire the work outdoors in our Raku kiln. Pieces will be removed from the red-hot kiln and quickly transferred into ash cans lined with flammable materials. Participants will go home the same day with dramatically transformed, finished work!

TRYON, NC — The Carolina Foothills Chamber of Commerce will present the 25th Annual Shuckin’ and Shakin’ event from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Harmon Field air gym.
Activities include live DJ dance music, all-you-can-eat seafood consisting of oysters roasted over an open fire, shrimp, mussels, barbecue chicken wings, authentic gumbo, coleslaw, rolls, iced tea, coffee, desserts and a great selection of draft beers and wine.
A bonfire will light up the sky after dark as guests dance away the hours.

Each year, Montreat College’s Center for Cybersecurity Education and Leadership hosts RETR3AT, a conference designed to engage, educate, and raise awareness about cybersecurity in Western North Carolina and beyond. RETR3AT goes beyond the “1s and 0s” approach to cybersecurity training, challenging attendees to think about how to lead in protecting their organization’s information within an ethical framework.
