Rafael Guastavino – Heritage and Legacy St. Lawrence Basilica
Mar 12 @ 5:30 pm
St. Lawrence Basilica
Article Image
Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino came to America in 1881, bringing with him an inherited method of dome construction unequaled for strength, beauty and fireproof design.  He made tiles, designed and constructed vaulted tile ceilings at the Biltmore Estate and designed and built St. Lawrence Basilica.  His works also include Grand Central Station and the Boston Library.
Our presenter, Dr. Jane Vann, will speak to the structural dynamics of tile vaulting and share her knowledge and appreciation of Guastavino’s work.
Dr. Vann is a retired seminary professor, leads a liturgical arts group at First Presbyterian Church, and sings in the Asheville Symphony Chorus.
Need another reason to attend?  St. Lawrence Basilica will be hosting the famed Notre Dame Glee Club following our presentation (7 pm)!
Seafood Basics
Mar 12 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
The Chop Shop Butchery

In this two-hour class our seafood wizard, Rob Jones, will teach you the secrets of buying, preparing, and cooking some of the most amazing fish from our coastal waters.

What to Expect:

  • MIX & MINGLE: Before we go into the cut room, you’ll get to sample local and house-made charcuterie and sip on beer from a local brewery (TBA) or a glass of wine while mingling with other students in the class.
  • FILET, DEBONE & PREP: Next, we’ll head into the cut room. (Dress warmly — it’s chilly in there!) Rob will show you how to filet, gut and debone a fish. You’ll get to practice hands-on while working alongside other students in the class.
  • During the class, you’ll learn about the different tools used in fish butchery to maximize yield and provide the best value for the whole fish. We’ll also discuss how to prepare and cook different types of fish.
  • TAKE IT HOME: At the end of the class, you’ll take home fresh fish and PDF notes.

Where does our seafood come from?

We work closely with Abundant Seafood from Charleston to get the freshest, most sustainably-caught seafood in the Southeast.

SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN REPERTORY THEATRE

CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES, a musical comedy about the women who work in the church kitchen, cooking meals for church events. The musical is inspired by the book Growing Up Lutheran by Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson. Characters range from an elderly matriarch to a young bride-to-be as they handle Christmas Dinner, a close-to-home funeral, a Hawaiian fundraiser, and hot July wedding. Our first thought about a church community may be that it is run by the male clergy, but this musical shows us that behind every strong church is a stronger group of women.

Raffle: Trip to London or Cash Asheville Community Theatre
Mar 13 – Mar 12 all-day
Asheville Community Theatre

Tickets on sale through June 28, 2020

We know how completely odd it seems to be raffling off a trip to London right now. We’re barely leaving our homes for any reason, so jetting off around the world seems flat out bonkers! We’re hopeful that international travel and fun vacations will happen again in the future – and that’s why we extended and amended the raffle prize! If you win, you can choose the trip to London (and you have 18 months to book your travel) OR you can choose to take the cash value of the trip instead ($10,000).

Our raffles have been important fundraisers for ACT over the years, and this one is no different. ACT has lost 85% of our income as an organization, so this raffle is one of the few ways we can continue to bring a little money in the door.

Buying a raffle ticket is a great way to support ACT right now – and it just might be you who gets some really great news from us!
