April is National Poetry Month and we invite all poets, would be poets and poetry fans to celebrate with Buncombe County Public Libraries.  We’ll be hosting the following free events at libraries all over the county.  For more information on any of these programs, contact your friendly neighborhood library.

Black Out Poetry Kits Available at the Library
All Month Long
Every Library

Come to any library and pick up a free kit to create a black out poetry masterpiece. Black out poetry doesn’t start with a blank page, it starts with a page of words taken from an old book. Poets will eliminate words to create a poem composed of the words left on the page. Visit any branch of Buncombe County Public Libraries in April to pick up your very own black out poetry kit featuring markers, inspiration and pages of print to begin your creation. When you’re finished, photograph your creation and upload it to facebook or instagram. Tag your library’s account and we’ll feature it as a post! You can also drop your poem by the library and we’ll post it for you. Kits are available while supplies last.

Desire Paths Art Exhibition
Apr 27 @ 11:00 am – 5:00 pm
Center for Crafts

digital collage with face pieces

Desire Paths looks at makers within the discourse of craft and those existing on the periphery of the craftscape who focus on the movement of the body towards something desirable. These desires of the body are in relationship to nature, technology, self, and society. Using architectural theory and queer curatorial strategies, Desire Paths examines the possibilities and futures of bodies, revealing connections between the corporeal and craft.

“Desire paths,” a term taken from urban planning, are lines trodden in the landscape when constructed walkways do not provide a direct or desired route. Through action, repetition, and intentionality, desire paths are crafted modifications to the landscape that allow for a body to move towards a horizon. The format of the works include traditional craft media, performance, video, and interactive web-based work. Through this variety of media and performative tactics the makers in Desire Paths consider how we view, value, and ascribe meaning to a body/the body/the others body. They show us the power and agency held in body and present us with crafted visions of the body that confront and expand expectations

The works in this exhibition reclaim the concept of craft from its historical associations with the decorative, frivolous, feminine, indigenous, and the other. The makers use the medium of craft, and the action of crafting, to produce powerful representations and counter narratives to dominant culture.

Logo new.jpg

Renoir’s “Girl Reading” painted not in oil, but in pastel by artist Al Junek.

If you can’t impress your friends with an original Renoir, here’s your opportunity to find the next best thing.

Art League of Henderson County presents “Fabulous Fakes,” an event of alternate artistic reality – one in which Picasso’s “Jacqueline” is enjoying a cocktail or Renoir’s “Girl Reading” was done in pastel, not oil.

Fabulous Fakes will deck the lobby of The Center for Art & Entertainment from April 20th through May 24th. These artworks are often parodies by Art League artist members that replicate the works of the masters, almost stroke for stroke, some with a hidden humorous – twist. All artworks will be for sale.

At Carolina Ground flour mill in Asheville, North Carolina, Jennifer Lapidus is transforming bakery offerings across the southern United States with intensely flavorful flour, made from grains grown and cold stone-milled in the heart of the South. While delivering extraordinary taste, texture, and story, cold stone-milled flour also allows bakers to move away from industrial commodity flours to create sustainable and artisanal products.

In Southern Ground, Lapidus celebrates the incredible work of craft bakers from all over the South. With detailed profiles on top Southern bakers and more than seventy-five highly curated recipes arranged by grain, Southern Ground harnesses the wisdom and knowledge that the baking community has gained. Lapidus showcases superior cold stone-milled flour and highlights the importance of baking with locally farmed ingredients while providing instruction and insight into how to use and enjoy these geographically distinct flavor-forward flours. Southern Ground is a love letter to Southern baking and a call for the home baker to understand the source and makeup of the most important of ingredients: flour.

Jennifer Lapidus is the founder and principal of Carolina Ground flour mill in Asheville, North Carolina. She launched Natural Bridge Bakery in 1994, where she milled her flours in-house and baked her naturally leavened breads in a wood-fired brick oven. Her bakery was the first of its kind in western North Carolina and was featured in Peter Reinhart’s Whole Grain Breads. Jennifer has appeared on The Splendid Table podcast and in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Saveur, Taste of the South, and numerous other local publications. Jennifer sits on the board of the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association and is co-organizer of the Asheville Bread Festival.

Andrea Reusing is the chef and owner of Lantern, where she collaborates with small farms and producers across North Carolina and is an advocate for food policy change. Reusing was the recipient of the James Beard Award for “Best Chef: Southeast” in 2011 and Lantern was named one of Gourmet Magazine’s America’s Top 50 Restaurants and one of “America’s 50 Most Amazing Wine Experiences” in Food & Wine. In 2011, Reusing published her cookbook, Cooking in the Moment: A Year of Seasonal Recipes. An absorbing journey through a year in her home kitchen as she cooks for family and friends, the book was named one of the most notable cookbooks of the year by The New York Times. Reusing was the founding chef of The Durham Hotel, home to her rooftop raw bar and American restaurant that was included in Bon Appétit’s 50 Best New Restaurants list and was named The News & Observer’s Restaurant of the Year in 2017. Her next Durham project is an homage to her grandmother and her basement game room, where she made pickles and dandelion wine. Reusing is the founder of Kitchen Patrol, Lantern’s project to improve children’s access to quality food through weekly cooking classes, and serves on the board of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems.

Coalescence, Contemplation + Creation: A Conversation on Nature-Inspired Contemplative Practice
Apr 27 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Online w/ NC Arboretum

A series of conversations on coalescence — crossing mediums and bridging disciplines — to discuss a nature-inspired creative and contemplative practice. This program in the series brings musicologist and sonic artist Tyler Kinnear into conversation about nature as aural inspiration. In what ways do we interpret the sonic environment? In what ways do we contribute to its composition? His creative practice draws on environmental sounds, with particular interest in sound ethnography, modes of listening, and performance using found objects. Award-winning photographer Susan Patrice teaches ways to deepen and document a relationship with nature through visual stewardship of where we are placed. Consider how the contemplative practices of two makers — Susan Patrice and Tyler Kinnear — coalesce in learning to see and hear more deeply in the enveloping landscape.

*Instructions for joining via Zoom will be included in your confirmation email following registration. Please add [email protected] to your contacts to ensure our emails do not end up in your spam folder. This is a live, interactive class and will NOT be recorded for later viewing.

Tyler Kinnear is an Instructor in the David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts at Western Carolina University, where he teaches world music and interdisciplinary arts courses. His sonic art practice draws on environmental sounds, with particular interest in sound ethnography, modes of listening, and performance using found objects. Currently, he is principal investigator of Sonic Histories, an interdisciplinary research initiative studying how students experience histories of race, class, and belonging at an institution of higher learning through sounds heard and imagined. He completed his Ph.D. in musicology at the University of British Columbia in 2017, with a dissertation examining manifestations of nature in contemporary music.

Susan Patrice is a documentary photographer, community artist, and founder of Makers Circle. She recently launched PhotoTerra, a community project that encourages photographers to make and share images of their lived experiences. Susan’s own photography and public installations focus primarily on the Southern Landscape and its people and feature intimate images that touch deeply into the questions of place, gender, and belonging. She teaches the contemplative photography courses for Adult Education Programs at The North Carolina Arboretum.

Rebecca Caldwell is a writer and educator who serves as the adult education programs manager at The North Carolina Arboretum. She has taught literature and writing at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Clemson University and Western Carolina University. Online w/ Awakening Asheville

Hosted by Rising Fire Shamanism
Cultivate presence in your life through direct experience. Join us to learn and use an ancient healing technique during each class.

About this Event
*** JOIN US FOR POWERFUL PRACTICES FROM WHEREVER YOU ARE!***
In response to the economic difficulties brought on by COVID, Rising Fire Shamanism is offering our Tuesday Night Shamanic Practice class for free beginning in February 2021 going through December 2021.
Tuesday Night Shamanic Practice class helps cultivate presence in your life through shamanic practices, sacred play, meditation, and centering techniques.

Learn how to transform and release dense energy from your body, mind and energy field. We do this while strengthening our refined energy, or “sami.” The idea is to build our living energy, our “kausay,” with mindfulness. We focus on different methods of experiencing directly each week to build or to enhance the foundation of your personal work.

This class is for the curious and those who would like to refine their personal practices. You will have the opportunity do something different each week; shamanic breathwork, journeying, meditation and more.
