Useful and Beautiful: Silvercraft by William Waldo Dodge

Useful and Beautiful: Silvercraft by William Waldo Dodge features a selection of functional silver works by Dodge drawn from the Museum’s Collection. Organized by the Asheville Art Museum and curated by Whitney Richardson, associate curator, this exhibition will be on view in the Debra McClinton Gallery at the Museum from February 23 through October 17, 2022.

William Waldo Dodge Jr. (Washington, DC 1895–1971 Asheville, NC) moved to Asheville in 1924 as a trained architect and a newly skilled silversmith. When he opened for business promoting his handwrought silver tableware, including plates, candlesticks, flatware (spoons, forks, and knives), and serving dishes, he did so in a true Arts and Crafts tradition. The aesthetics of the style were dictated by its philosophy: an artist’s handmade creation should reflect their hard work and skill, and the resulting artwork should highlight the material from which it was made. Dodge’s silver often displayed his hammer marks and inventive techniques, revealing the beauty of these useful household goods.

The Arts and Crafts style of England became popular in the United States in the early 1900s. Asheville was an early adopter of the movement because of the popularity and abundance of Arts and Crafts architecture in neighborhoods like Biltmore Forest, Biltmore Village, and the area around The Grove Park Inn. The title of this exhibition was taken from the famous quotation by one of the founding members of the English Arts and Crafts Movement, William Morris, who said, “have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Not only did Dodge follow this suggestion; he contributed to American Arts and Crafts silver’s relevancy persisting almost halfway into the 20th century.

“It has been over 15 years since the Museum exhibited its collection of William Waldo Dodge silver and I am looking forward to displaying it in the new space with some new acquisitions added,” said Whitney Richardson, associate curator. Learn more at ashevilleart.org.

Growing Your Own Women’s Circle or Red Tent Online Workshop

## Creating Community With Women

Live Online Workshop
Saturday, September 17, 1 – 4 pm Eastern Time

Women’s Circles are an important way for women to connect with each other and with themselves. The Red Tent is a multi-generational woman-only space where women can honor the cycles of our lives. It is a place for women to speak the unspeakable, to name our experiences, our fears and joys of womanhood, and to connect with other women. A Red Tent Ritual is a sacred space set aside to sing, to speak our truth and to sink into the cycles. All women are welcome in the Red Tent, whether you are bleeding, past bleeding, or yet to bleed; whether you have a womb or have had a hysterectomy.

If you want to start facilitating Women’s Circles and Red Tents or want to empower yourself in your own practice, this class will guide you into the Women’s Mysteries of the Red Tent. We will talk about the history (herstory) of the Red Tent and the power of women’s space. You will learn basic structure of ritual creation, tips about facilitating ritual, how to set up the physical space, as well as many songs, chants, and meditations.

After taking this class, you will feel equipped to offer Women’s Circles and/or Red Tent Circles for the women in your life and have more structure for your own personal practice. Please join me in the Red Tent!

Introducing: The Black Box
Series. Blood Knot. Sept. 16 - Oct. 9.

Like all the best plays, Blood Knot is both relatable and searingly intimate. And like all the best plays, it will get under your skin. It is a play that asks us to dig beneath the surface of what makes us kin and what happens when we don’t like what we find there. Blood Knot, by renowned South African playwright Athol Fugard, is about two brothers, one black and the other light-skinned, grappling with crippling poverty and lonely isolation—living a strained existence in a one-room shack in apartheid South Africa. The brothers’ desperation exposes the complex angles of their relationship in this powerful, revolutionary play.

*Adult language and content.

PATIO SHOW: The Cheeksters
Sep 17 @ 6:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

The Cheeksters were formed in 1990 soon after Mark and Shannon met by chance on a train in London, England. Mark hails from the UK, while Shannon was born and raised in Tennessee.

They started performing music together as a duo with Mark on guitar and vocals and Shannon playing bass guitar. They soon released their debut album “Stranger Things Have Happened” in 1992, followed by “Hey, What’s Your Style ?” in 1994.

The couple relocated to Nashville in 1996 and began working with producer Brent Little at his all-analog studio where they have recorded four critically acclaimed albums: “Skating On The Cusp” (1999) “Nineteen Sixty-Five” (2005) “Movers and Shakers” (2007) “The Golden Birds” (2011).

Over the years The Cheeksters have performed extensively in the SouthEast US, as well as showcasing their talents in NYC and London. The Cheeksters combine the best of what made music great in the 1960’s and 70’s with a winning fresh pop approach that delights audiences. In the studio the group has produced six albums of timeless, tuneful, terrific pop that has real staying power.

Onstage the versatile five-piece band turns out its catchy pop confections, bringing to mind a swirling variety of influences including Memphis soul and Carnaby Street pop. They somehow manage to channel Burt Bacharach/Hal David, Dusty Springfield’s diva soul, T-Rex’s manic boogie and the pomp of David Bowie often in the same song without sounding derivative.

The current line-up has performed together for the past ten years and is made up of Mark Casson (vocals, guitar, piano, bass), Shannon Hines Casson (vocals, bass guitar, piano), Jay Moye (piano, guitar), Je Widenhouse (trumpet) and Mike Baker (drums).

Hannah Bethel
Sep 17 @ 7:00 pm
Isis Music Hall

Storytelling permeates throughout popular music, but few songwriters can stop you in your tracks and transport you to a specific moment in time, making you feel love, heartbreak, fear, and nostalgia, quite like Hannah Bethel. Her ability to tap into deeply personal songwriting was the turning point for Bethel, and beginning in 2018, provided a trilogy of breakthrough songs, including “Train,” “Rhinestone Rodeo,” and the emotionally riveting “The House Is on Fire,” the latter of which won top honors in the Americana category of the 2019 International Songwriting Competition. Blurring the lines between Americana, country, folk, rock and pop, her artistry reflects who she is: a fiercely independent, wild, free, and untamed spirit.

Bethel’s stellar 2022 EP, ‘Until the Sun Comes Back Around,’ leads you through the culmination of the past few years of her life, and the surrender to her own truth. This watershed period of creativity provided the fire power behind the EP’s critically acclaimed songs, “Bad News Baby,” “Someone’s Woman,” and “On The Way Down”

Bethel has received accolades from Maverick, The Washington Post, Billboard, Holler Country, Taste of Country, Country Music People, and others. She recently took home the award for “Best Female Vocalist” at the 2022 Appalachian Arts & Entertainment Awards.

Come enjoy an evening of live music, food and drinks at Isis Music Hall.  Advanced Reservations are highly recommended.

Described by Newsday as “brutally entertaining,” God of Carnage is a comedy of manners… without the manners. Don’t miss the triple-Tony-Award-winning Broadway sensation by Yasmina Reza. The New Yorker calls this laugh-out-loud hilarity “ninety minutes of sustained mayhem.”  A playground altercation between eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of Brooklyn parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses and the rum flows, tensions emerge and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their principals in tatters.

“A streamlined anatomy of the human animal… delivers the cathartic release of watching other people’s marriages go boom. This play is itself a satisfyingly primitive entertainment.” –The New York Times

flipturn
Sep 17 @ 9:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

In the time since 2015, flipturn has mushroomed to reaches far beyond the walls of the Fernandina Beach garage they first practiced in. Built up by Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass), Mitch Fountain (synth), and Devon VonBalson (drums), the band is walking proof that the DIY approach is still alive and well in the modern music world. Growing up and maturing as musicians in a way that can only be done by spending years on the road together, flipturn is primed to usher in the era of their debut full-length album.

A flipturn live show is a complete and total release of inhibitions, from the band to the crowd alike. The fever dream energy of their live shows has positioned flipturn as a metaphorical musical sun, holding fans in a trancelike orbit. Basse has a quality to his voice that absolutely ensnares the listener and pulls them deeply into the moment around them. The overall magnetism of the band has allowed them to bring the intimate qualities of their small town roots to a global audience.

Back in 2017, flipturn released their debut EP Heavy Colors, which introduced the world to enduring favorites like “Chicago” and “Vanilla.” The following year saw the release of the Citrona EP and some of the band’s most beloved music to date. Most recently, Something You Needed was released right before the world shut down. During the pandemic, the band released a variety of live performances of fan favorites to keep the feeling of live shows fresh, even from home.

With over 40 million streams on Spotify alone, countless sold out shows across the US, and tours with Mt.Joy, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Wilderado, the band has a lead foot on the gas pedal. This year, flipturn will be joining the prestigious lineups of Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, SXSW, Hangout, Sunfest, and Treefort to name a handful. Fans can also look forward to the upcoming release of their debut album in 2022.

NORDISTA FREEZE

Where did Nordista Freeze come from? Everyone who saw it happen has a different explanation, but they agree on one thing: a flaming blue orb came flying out of the sky and smashed into the earth, and there, lying sprawled in the crater, was a man wearing only his underwear with a tambourine in his hand. He rose to his knees, vomited profusely, and took off running over the rim of the crater and into the distance yelling “Na Na”. Where did he come from?!

Maybe outer space? His first two records were called Space Travel and Cosmic Haus. Is he a time traveler from the past? His 60s pysch-pop anthems and bouncy flow say so. A time traveler from the future? Many believe he’s like a Terminator 2 Terminator sent back to save the music industry from self-destruction. All this is speculation. His origin notwithstanding, he’s brought a transcendent message, a secret of life that transmits through his legendary live performance. Come hear it and believe.
