The 14th West Asheville Garden Stroll is Saturday, September 9 from 11 AM to 4 PM. With the theme “Every Garden is a Universe,” this year’s Stroll features 15 diverse gardens in the neighborhood between Hall Fletcher Elementary School and Hanover Street. Stroll Guides with a map and garden descriptions will be available at the school, 60 Ridgelawn Road, from 11:00 until 3:30. A family-friendly kickoff program at 10:30 includes sing-alongs and a lively presentation about native plants and pollinators by Bee City founder Phyllis Stiles. Local organizations will be on hand to offer resources for gardeners and possibly some items for sale.
The Garden Stroll is free, and all are welcome to join in this community event, rain or shine. While there is street parking throughout the neighborhood, we encourage you to park at the school and walk or bike the 2.5 mile route.
In the gardens you’ll find spaciousness & intimacy, familiar natives and exotic cultivars, fruits & nuts, as well as lovely hardscapes and creative landscaping. There’s ice cream from The Hop, a tree house or two, a Japanese tea garden, terraces & rain catchments, raised veggie beds & shiitake mushroom logs, water features & a wetlands area, chickens & frogs. Come see new and mature gardens and works-in-progress, and chat with friendly and enthusiastic gardeners.
Asheville Outlets will team with Yoga Nut to host a Wellness Expo on Saturday, September 9, 2023, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with booth proceeds benefitting Babies Need Bottoms. The complimentary Expo will provide attendees with a wide array of fitness, health, and wellness tools, including a complimentary yoga session and a movement workshop focusing on spine and hip mobility for pain prevention. Additional activities will include an antigravity chair, mini acupuncture sessions, health & wellness coaching sessions, brain assessments, information on Medicaid and Medicare, blood pressure screenings, and more. We will also cover the basics of salve and tincture making! Join Extension Master Gardeners for this program showcasing native butterfly/moth host plants in the Sun & Shade gardens, and view the life cycle stages of the butterflies/moths on these native hosts plants. Including caterpillars, eggs, chrysalis and adults.
Portions of this program may be held outside; please dress appropriately for the weather.

Join Meg Chamberlin founder of Fermenti for a demonstration and hands on class designed to introduce you to the basic principles of fermentation for the home, hobby farmer/gardener, and foodie alike! Participants will be provided with a kit and supplies to start a basic vegetable ferment that will be completed at home. Meg will cover everything from salt curing fruits, honey ferments, basic fermentation principals, and creative recipe ideas, plus problem-solving techniques, and planning your garden with intention to ferment will all be discussed. The two basic types of vegetable fermentation, self-brining like sauerkraut and kimchi as well as, brined vegetables like pickles will be covered. You will walk away with a jar and knowledge to keep the process going. You will also have ferment recipe ideas, culinary applications of fermented foods, and a secure understanding of how fermentation will cut your food waste, reduce food budget, and increase your nutritional value.
We will provide light snacks including ferments to taste. Space is limited – register today!

We all love a beautiful patio pot, a garden creation. But seasons change, plants grow old, and our pots need rejuvenation. . Join Laura Carter, co-owner of Thyme in the Garden, who will show us how to extend the life of our planted pots and how to transition them from summer into fall and beyond. Laura will guide us with design tips, plant selection, and practical planting advice to extend the season and make the most of those small garden spaces.

The races offer a unique opportunity to explore the spectacular 10,000 acres of rolling hills and towering trees that make up this beautiful forest. Run or walk in the one mile or 5k run/walk events, or take on the 8.5 mile challenging trail race – but beware! With nearly 1,000 feet of elevation gain it’s no walk in the park!

Ikebana International, Asheville Chapter 74, is hosting an ikebana exhibition September 23-24 at the NC Arboretum. There will be ikebana designs for viewing throughout the weekend and members will be available to explain ikebana flower arranging techniques and materials. The exhibition will feature ikebana designs from the four main schools. There will be table-top designs, pedestal designs and floor/installation designs to show a full range of how ikebana can be displayed.
This unique weekend retreat was developed to refresh stroke survivors and caregivers from the many challenges related to stroke recovery and is open to stroke survivors, caregivers, family members and friends. This is a weekend of education, socialization, relaxation and support, including crafts, games, activities, pampering, rock climbing and nature walks. This is Mission Health’s 8th year sponsoring this event, and it will be held at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain.

She holds degrees in holistic nutrition and sociology, and is an alumnus of both The University of North Carolina at Asheville and Clayton College of Natural Health.
