Asheville’s Independence Day 5k will get you starting your July 4th with a bang! This is a flat, family friendly course that starts and ends at the Asheville Outlet Mall.

Art created by Vance Elementary School fifth grade students of art educator Robbie Lipe is now on display on the brick walls opposite the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The exhibit depicts the students’ interpretation of the artist Kehinde Wiley and the contemporary portraits he creates inspired by traditional Baroque paintings. It will be featured through the end of the summer.

“Ben & Jerry’s is excited about showcasing art from the community inside our scoop shop,” said general manager Chris Carter. “Making use of our walls to show what local artists are creating complements our social mission — to be actively involved in the places we live and do business. I hope this is the first of many art exhibits on our walls.”

Carter gave all the credit for the exhibit to Ms. Lipe, who teaches kindergarten through 5th-grade students at Vance Elementary. She was named the North Carolina Arts Educators Association “Art Educator of the Year” in 2017-2018.

Join the Isaacs, Family and Friends for a fun Country and Bluegrass Independence Day concert at the SMPAC on July 4th! Then break out your instrument and jam with each other and the Isaacs for a Back Lot Barbecue and Pickin Party! (Held in the back of SMCPA with perfect viewing of the town fireworks spectacular!) Bring a lawn chair, enjoy dinner, a fun evening of pickin’ and grinnin’ and activities. Dinner includes: BBQ plate with all the fixings, cookie and beverage (soft drink, tea or water). The Isaacs, a multi-award winning family group, features mother Lily Isaacs, and siblings Ben Isaacs, Sonya Isaacs Yeary and Rebecca Isaacs Bowman. Playing their own acoustic instruments and joined by other band members, The Isaacs have a unique style that blends tight, family harmony with contemporary acoustic instrumentation that appeals to a variety of audiences. Their musical style has been influenced by many genres of music including bluegrass, rhythm and blues, folk and country, contemporary, acoustic and southern gospel. They perform frequently at the Grand Old Opry, and are active members on the Gaither Homecoming Videos. Throughout the year, they often perform to welcoming fans in countries such as South Africa, Norway, Holland, Scotland, Ireland, Israel, Canada and many more. They feel very blessed to be able to share their message of grace through song and story.

When country music lovers talk about the greatest groups in the genre, Shenandoah is always at the forefront of any discussion. Fueled by Marty Raybon’s distinctive vocals and the band’s skilled musicianship, Shenandoah became well known for delivering such hits as “Two Dozen Roses,” “Church on Cumberland Road” and “Next to You, Next to Me” as well as such achingly beautiful classics as “I Want to be Loved Like That” and the Grammy winning “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart” duet with Alison Krauss. Today that legacy continues as original members Raybon and Mike McGuire reunite to launch a new chapter in Shenandoah’s storied career. “We are really proud of the quality of the material that we have in our catalog and how it’s touched so many people’s lives,” McGuire says. “As far as the future goes, I’m expecting more of the same.”

Join us for an intimate evening of eclectic music by this local, powerful duo!
Greenblues brings a message of world thought, and is often seasoned with eastern and African musical stylings. Many traditions are blended into a unique eclectic style, creating a very original kaleidoscope of sound, while maintaining the intimacy of a duet. The group consists of: Ashley Rae – vocals & percussion and Mike Gilmore – guitars, bouzouki & hand drums. Concert is free or $5-10 suggested donation.

Enjoy a sweet treat and get to know Best Buddies NC at an upcoming social on Thursday, July 11th from 6:30 – 8 pm.  Best Buddies NC is a nonprofit organization consisting of volunteers that create opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Learn more about this group and help them gain awareness within the community. Join the Blue Star Tribe for a powerful mid-year reboot! It’s time to shed the past and step into your personal power. This workshop taps into the healing power of the full moon (which occurs on the 16th), shamanic ceremony and essential oils to release what’s not working for you and attract more of what brings you joy!

In this interactive workshop you will:

– Learn how to identify “false egos” and repetitive patterns that are not in your highest and best good
– Participate in a creative exercise to express the false egos you wish to release
– Learn rituals to use during all the moon’s phases to increase abundance

– Create verbal, written and gestured light language
– Participate in a shamanic drumming circle
– Receive a light language activation and healing
– Take a meditative journey to meet your power and totem animals
– Learn about essential oils and their use in your personal spiritual and healing process
– Sample various essential oils
– Learn how using these oils daily can help you live your best life

Summer Cycle is This Saturday!

HOSTED BY: Asheville on Bikes and the event sponsors.

This free, family-friendly event is open to the public and includes easy-to-follow route options for bike riders of all ages and abilities, followed by a celebration at New Belgium Brewing. Summer Cycle is perfect for the new or returning bike rider to get started and meet new friends to ride with in Asheville. Volunteers needed too!

Pick your Summer Cycle route! 

• 2 mile easy River Arts District loop
• 10 mile Main Route that tours the best of the RAD& West Asheville.
• 14 mile Ride More Route that adds an extra loop to the Main Route

Summer Cycle ’19 Schedule:

• 3:00pm – Gather at New Belgium Brewing
• 3:30pm – Kick off with all-ages balance bike loop, then all rides depart
• 4:30pm (ish) – Return to New Belgium Brewing for post-ride celebration.

Participants are asked to have their bicycle in good condition and bring a water bottle, lights, and bike bell. Costumes are encouraged, helmets are required!  There is lots more info at AoB’s Facebook page, where you can RSVP and even VOLUNTEER to help make it happen.

Cultural historian Joseph Horowitz curates a program focusing on the relationship between Aaron Copland and the dynamic Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas. A screening of the emotionally searing film Redes is accompanied by a live performance of the original Revueltas score.

Jonathan “Jelly” Ellington is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter based in Austin, TX by way of the mountains of Asheville, NC. His vocals are smooth and soulful with an edgy guitar style, chiming in elements of raw and expressive blues-based rock n’ roll. Jelly has developed a reputation for exciting and untamed live performances, and has shared the stage and recorded with Grammy Award-winning artists. He has been making his mark on the Austin scene, voted Top 10 “Best Guitarist” in 2018 and 2019 Austin Chronicle Austin Music Awards.
