The three-piece group’s latest, Weight Of A Trigger, is a portal in to when Americana was peopled by sensitive outlaws who pleaded for salvation in song. The 10-song collection spans old-time music, Appalachian folk, redemptive country blues, and winsome balladry. Each song is elegantly essential, using teardrop pedal steel guitar, delicate fingerpicked passages, emotive harmony vocals, and stately violin touches as delicate dynamic touches. It’s an album of hard truths themed around a three-part narrative of Thomas Clancy Russell, and stories of fated love, addiction, tragic deaths, and rising demons. The ghost of former collaboratorNicholas Ridout, a uniquely gifted musician who took his life, haunts the proceedings. His presence is made all the more poignant by Lost Street Dog performing his sweetly high lonesome song “Lazy Moonshiner.”

FLAT ROCK PLAYHOUSE
In 1937, a group of struggling performers, led by Robroy Farquhar, organized themselves as the Vagabond Players. The Vagabonds worked in a variety of places over the course of three years, and in 1940 found themselves in the Blue Ridge region of Western North Carolina. The local and tourist community welcomed them with open arms when they presented their first summer season of plays in a 150-year-old grist mill they converted into The Old Mill Playhouse at Highland Lake. So successful was that summer, they returned in 1941. After WWII, the Vagabond Players reorganized came back to the region and opened a playhouse in nearby Lake Summit. The Lake Summit Playhouse thrived during the post-war years and soon the Vagabond Players were looking for a larger and permanent home. In 1952, the troupe of performers, and a newly formed board of directors made an offer to buy an 8-acre lot in the Village of Flat Rock. This new home made the Vagabonds “locals” and a rented big top gave birth to Flat Rock Playhouse. As the beautiful Western Carolina region continued to grow, so did the Playhouse and in 1961, by Act of the North Carolina General Assembly, Flat Rock Playhouse was officially designated The State Theatre of North Carolina. What began as a few weeks of summer performances in 1940 is now a nine-month season of plays including Broadway musicals, comedy, drama, and theatre for young audiences. The Playhouse’s dual mission of producing the performing arts and providing education in the performing arts includes a professional series; a summer and fall college apprentice and intern program; and Studio 52, year-round classes and workshops in theatre and film for students from kindergarten through adults. Flat Rock Playhouse now hosts over 98,000 patrons annually and is a significant contributor to the local economy and the Arts in North Carolina.

The music of Dallas Ugly is anything but what the name implies. Libby Weitnauer, Eli Broxham, and Owen Burton’s fusion of pop country and indie-folk rock is heartfelt and intimate. Dallas Ugly’s work incorporates Burton’s unique rolling electric guitar style, Weitnauer’s expert fiddle playing, and the songwriting of all three members. Plain-faced and striking vocals reflect their collective influences of old time, country, and bluegrass music, while their arrangements and songwriting point away to other genres. Dallas Ugly recorded their full length debut album in April of 2021 and is making plans for a release.

Ryan Speedo Green fell for opera at age fourteen after seeing a Met production of Carmen. Sing for Your Life (2016), by New York Times journalist Daniel Bergner, tells the story of Mr. Green’s personal and artistic journey: from a trailer park in southeastern Virginia and time spent in Virginia’s juvenile facility of last resort to the Met stage.
Now his career is rising. He has quickly established himself as an artist of international demand at the world’s leading opera houses. Mr. Green opens the Metropolitan Opera’s 2021 – 2022 season as Uncle Paul in Terrence Blanchard’s Fire Shut up in my Bones and reprises his Grammy Award winning role of Jake in Porgy and Bess, Colline in La bohème, and sings Truffaldino in Ariadne auf Naxos, which will be broadcast as part of the Met’s Live in HD series. Mr. Green also makes his house debut with Washington National Opera as Escamillo in Carmen, directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by music director Evan Rogister.
He received a Master of Music degree from Florida State University, a Bachelor of Music degree from the Hartt School of Music, and was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2012–13 as Mandarin in Puccini’s Turandot, followed by Parsifal as a Grail Knight. In 2014–15 he sang Rambo in The Death of Klinghoffer at the Met. Green returned to the Met in 2016 as Colline in La Bohème.

Since 2002, Abbey Road LIVE! has been rocking the music of the Beatles at clubs, theatres, festivals, and private events. Initially a tribute to the monumental “Abbey Road” album, the band has expanded its scope to include more than 100 Beatles tunes, from all eras of the Fab Four’s career. The band specializes in complete, start-to-finish album performances of masterpieces such as “Abbey Road”, “Magical Mystery Tour”, “Rubber Soul”, “Revolver” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band”.
Abbey Road LIVE! is not your typical Beatle look-alike tribute act; don’t expect mop-top haircuts and vintage Rickenbacker guitars. Rather, this show is about bringing to life some of the more mature and complex Beatles material in a raw & spirited fashion, while remaining true to the original recordings. Abbey Road LIVE! is made up of four all-star musicians from the infamous Athens GA music scene that gave the world R.E.M., Widespread Panic, and B-52s. While the four lads from Athens GA generally perform as a quartet, they have also been known to recruit the “Magical Mystery Horns” and the “Lonely Hearts Strings”, lending authentic accompaniment to the more elaborately orchestrated tunes. The latest addition to the Abbey Road LIVE! musical arsenal is a real Indian sitar and tablas.
At a typical Abbey Road LIVE! show, audiences young and old can found gleefully singing along with every word, many in utter disbelief at getting to hear this monumental music performed live; something that even the Beatles themselves never did, since they stopped touring in 1966.

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners has extended the countywide face covering requirement for all indoor public spaces through Feb. 16, 2022. The indoor mask requirement also extends to Asheville, Biltmore Forest, Black Mountain, Town of Montreat, Weaverville, and Woodfin.
In Buncombe County, COVID-19 case rates continue to be high, and per the CDC definition, the County remains an area of high transmission. The percent positivity remains in the moderate category, and the death rate remains in the substantial category.

Ultrafaux performs original music influenced by many world styles including Balkan folk music, Gypsy jazz, bluegrass, be-bop, funk, Brazilian choro, and French musette. The core trio is an acoustic powerhouse of two guitars and upright bass led by acclaimed guitarist Michael Joseph Harris with rhythm guitarist Connor Holdridge and double bassist Blake Meister. The compositions are replete with rich melodies, dazzling solos, and inspiring rhythmic accompaniment. Ultrafaux performs in a variety of configurations often adding top players on violin, accordion, and clarinet. The show at Isis Music Hall on Saturday February 5th will feature the amazing Kristen Harris (Boomtown Trio) on violin. Ultrafaux likes to include a few unexpected surprise guests from the Gypsy jazz community, so you are always in for a treat!

Salvation Army Santas, hard liquor, new classics and some old country standbys make up the Honeycutters’ Holiday Spectacular. After the 2019 release of their EP, “Christmas on a Greyhound Bus,” Amanda Anne Platt and her band took to the road bringing with them a holiday show that is both irreverent and heartwarming. The spectacular is back for 2021, with some new tunes in tow from their forthcoming studio album, “The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea.”
The music of Asheville, North Carolina based outfit Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters is nuanced, bringing insight and wit to the stories Platt tells through songwriting. Lyrically driven, the band’s country roots music often inspires introspection, whether it be about life on the road, heartache or hope.
There is an empathetic and charming wit ingrained in Platt’s songwriting. She has a knack for accessing a deep well of emotion and applying it to her story-telling, whether she is writing from her own experiences or immersing herself into the melody of emotions in another person’s life.
Performing along with Platt, The Honeycutters are Matt Smith (pedal steel and electric guitars), Kevin Williams (keys), Rick Cooper (bass/vocals), and Evan Martin (drums/vocals).

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners has extended the countywide face covering requirement for all indoor public spaces through Feb. 16, 2022. The indoor mask requirement also extends to Asheville, Biltmore Forest, Black Mountain, Town of Montreat, Weaverville, and Woodfin.
In Buncombe County, COVID-19 case rates continue to be high, and per the CDC definition, the County remains an area of high transmission. The percent positivity remains in the moderate category, and the death rate remains in the substantial category.
This year will feature an exhilarating blend of beloved productions, including Million Dollar Quartet, West Side Story, and Mamma Mia! The popular Music on the Rock® series, Studio 52 Family Programming, and a brand new Black Box series round out the 2022 season and mark a renewed beginning for FRP after a long pandemic shutdown.

FLAT ROCK PLAYHOUSE
In 1937, a group of struggling performers, led by Robroy Farquhar, organized themselves as the Vagabond Players. The Vagabonds worked in a variety of places over the course of three years, and in 1940 found themselves in the Blue Ridge region of Western North Carolina. The local and tourist community welcomed them with open arms when they presented their first summer season of plays in a 150-year-old grist mill they converted into The Old Mill Playhouse at Highland Lake. So successful was that summer, they returned in 1941. After WWII, the Vagabond Players reorganized came back to the region and opened a playhouse in nearby Lake Summit. The Lake Summit Playhouse thrived during the post-war years and soon the Vagabond Players were looking for a larger and permanent home. In 1952, the troupe of performers, and a newly formed board of directors made an offer to buy an 8-acre lot in the Village of Flat Rock. This new home made the Vagabonds “locals” and a rented big top gave birth to Flat Rock Playhouse. As the beautiful Western Carolina region continued to grow, so did the Playhouse and in 1961, by Act of the North Carolina General Assembly, Flat Rock Playhouse was officially designated The State Theatre of North Carolina. What began as a few weeks of summer performances in 1940 is now a nine-month season of plays including Broadway musicals, comedy, drama, and theatre for young audiences. The Playhouse’s dual mission of producing the performing arts and providing education in the performing arts includes a professional series; a summer and fall college apprentice and intern program; and Studio 52, year-round classes and workshops in theatre and film for students from kindergarten through adults. Flat Rock Playhouse now hosts over 98,000 patrons annually and is a significant contributor to the local economy and the Arts in North Carolina.
