Organic Growers School is now accepting work trade applications for the 30th Annual Spring Conference & Market!

The OGS Spring Conference will be held at Mars Hill University from February 24-26, 2023.

In exchange for each shift worked you will be compensated for the same day of the Conference. For example; if you work trade on Saturday, you will have access to the Conference on Saturday and will be free to attend workshops throughout the day, as long as they don’t conflict with your shift hours.

Work traders can select two shifts if they would like to attend on Saturday and Sunday, or three shifts, if they would like to participate the whole weekend.

General work trade shifts do not require special skills or backgrounds. They do, however, require timeliness and a friendly demeanor. Classroom Assistants/Moderators require training and classroom experience.

You should expect to be working during some of the class time unless you are approved for a pre-or post-conference shift, or come as a paying participant.

Work Trade Deposit:

All volunteers are required to submit a $40 deposit. Please complete one registration and submit only one deposit. You may include any additional interest shifts in the additional notes section of the work trade application. Deposits are refunded once you complete your work trade shift. Once your schedule and duties are confirmed, it is up to you to show up for your shifts on time and to complete your shift as asked. In the unfortunate event that you do not fulfill your shift, we will process your credit card for the deposit amount. Hear what the experts predict for the economy in 2023. Our presenter, Dr. Harry M. Davis, is the Professor of Banking (1980) and Economist (1981) for the North Carolina Bankers Association. He is professor of Finance and past Chair of the Department of Finance, Banking, and Insurance at Appalachian State University (1981-1998). As the North Carolina Bankers Association Economist, Dr. Davis puts together quarterly economic forecasts that are carried by various news outlets. Dr. Davis is frequently interviewed throughout the year by newspapers, television, and radio stations for stories on the economy and banking. Dr. Davis is a frequent speaker at state, regional and national banking conventions on economic and banking issues. Dr. Davis is active in the consulting field and has presented seminars to business groups both in North Carolina and nationwide. He puts together feasibility plans, business plans and valuations for both financial and nonfinancial corporations. Dr. Davis has served as a consultant for numerous start-up banks in North Carolina. He helped start a local bank in Boone and served on its Board of Directors for over 20 years. Dr. Davis is presently on the Board of Directors of LifeStore Bank in West Jefferson, NC. We are seeking volunteers to assist us in our small after school program for children in West Asheville in low-income housing.  We provide a safe and nourishing environment, healthy snacks, and creative activities.  Our program currently meets during the school year on most Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00-5:00pm. You may volunteer for one or two days a week. 

Volunteer Responsibilities:

• Assist with serving snacks
• Interact with children during activity time
• Supervise games and outdoor free time
• For people with background in education, there is also an opportunity to assist with curriculum development and program planning and administration

Requirements:

• Background check
• Orientation booklets will be provided
• Masks are required if unvaccinated

UNC Asheville welcomes award-winning author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates in conversation in the Sherrill Center’s Kimmel Arena on Tuesday, February 28. The event, which will include a reading and question-and-answer session, is free and open to all but requires advanced registration through Eventbrite. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Coates is the author of the bestselling books The Beautiful Struggle, We Were Eight Years in Power, The Water Dancer, and Between the World and Me, which received the National Book Award in 2015. Over his two-decade career, Coates has written for The New York Times and The Atlantic, where he penned the National Magazine Award-winning 2012 essay, Fear of a Black President.

Outside of his work as a novelist and journalist, Coates has enjoyed a successful career as a writer for Marvel’s Black Panther (2016-2021) and Captain America (2018-2021) comic series.

Coates’s work also includes an on-screen adaptation of The Water Dancer, set to be produced by Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt. He is also the screenwriter for DC’s newest Superman film, as well as Wrong Answer, which will feature Michael B. Jordan and be produced by Ryan Coogler.

In the fall of 2022, Coates joined the faculty of Howard University as a writer-in-residence and the Sterling Brown Chair in the Department of English.

Join our presenter, Marlowe Weingart of Humane Resourcing, LLC to learn about group and individual dynamics that influence behavioral outcomes, followed by a fun interactive activity where individuals will get to practice appropriate workplace behaviors. A variety of practical options will be offered in a non-threatening atmosphere to empower individuals and/or to offer day-to-day management strategies. All participants will leave with at least one easily integrated strategy to support redirection and improved communication in one’s workplace.

CarePartners PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) is a program for people age 55 or older that need support to remain safely at home. It provides community-based care and services for people who might otherwise need a nursing home level of care. A PACE program works to promote and sustain the independence of seniors, and help those who want to live at home, stay at home.
