Hand-Woven Chair Caning with Brandy Clements and David Klingler

Learn traditional hand-woven chair caning, an ancient and global craft that is currently trending like crazy. Students will learn the 6-way pattern on chairs with holes drilled into the perimeter of the seat frame. With invaluable tips and tricks this class is great for beginners or those with experience who want to improve their skills. Common structural issues and how to repair them will be included. At the end of class, students will have a functional piece of art, a family heirloom restored, or a new skill for which to create a cottage business or a hobby. Information on other patterns, history of chair caning, and chair caning business practices are included, as are materials. Tool kits are an optional purchase and include helpful specialized tools to enhance the weaving experience.

The capacity for this class is 12 students. This class is presented in collaboration with the John C. Campbell Folk School. There will be an optional Orientation and Closing Ceremony hosted from the Folk School campus that students can attend online.

This fun and high-energy 10-week class combines the three fundamentals of musical theater, acting, singing, and dance, in an accessible and exciting way! With a focus on singing technique, musicality, movement, and storytelling, students will learn new skills and make friends as they develop songs from Broadway musicals. No prior experience is necessary. With new material every semester, this class can (and should) be taken multiple times! We will end the semester with a performance for family and friends on Monday April 24 in the evening!

We are seeking volunteers to assist us in our small after school program for children in West Asheville in low-income housing.  We provide a safe and nourishing environment, healthy snacks, and creative activities.  Our program currently meets during the school year on most Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00-5:00pm. You may volunteer for one or two days a week. 

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Assist with serving snacks
  • Interact with children during activity time
  • Supervise games and outdoor free time
  • For people with background in education, there is also an opportunity to assist with curriculum development and program planning and administration

Students will eat what they grow! School gardens are an excellent tool for experiential learning and nutrition education. In this virtual workshop, early care and education professionals will be trained to establish farm to school gardens and to integrate gardening into state and national curriculum.

We will share resources to create or expand your garden program as well as tips and strategies for gardening with young children. We emphasize how to sustain a garden program by involving community partners, such as parents, farmers, college students, and agricultural professionals. Please register in advance for this meeting. Pacolet Junior Appalachian Musicians (PacJAM) provides an opportunity for area youth and adults to experience community through the joy of participating in traditional music.
PacJAM offers sessions each fall and winter/spring semester, as well as an intensive day camp one week each summer for youth.

ASAP’s 2023 Business of Farming Conference will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the A-B Tech Conference Center in Asheville. 

ASAP’s Annual Business of Farming Conference brings together professional farmers from across the Southeast region to network and share resources to grow their farm businesses. Farmers learn about marketing, business planning, and financial management from regional experts and innovative peers. The conference is designed for beginning and established farmers as well as those seriously considering farming as a profession. Scholarships are available for BIPOC and limited-resource farmers. Find out more and apply.

Farmers Market Summit

The summit brings together farmers market managers from across the Appalachian Grown region for peer-sharing, technical assistance support, and annual planning. Building Racial Equity in Land, Food, and Health Systems

Dreaming Stone Arts and Ecology Center

This training is led by Community Food Strategies and is geared toward community leaders, educators, and folks working in the food system. We will look at how racial inequity is perpetuated by institutional and structural systems and is normalized to the extent of being nearly invisible. Simultaneously, our country’s agricultural system has an unacknowledged debt to Black, Indigenous and people of color. Together, we will build understanding around historical and current impacts of structural racism on our food and agricultural systems.

Instructors will share best practices and challenges around engaging racial equity personally, institutionally and culturally. You will leave this training with greater awareness of our shared history, of our interconnected liberation and healing, and a greater capacity to address all forms of marginalization and undo food system inequities to the benefit of all.

birding location. On the 2nd Saturday of each month, meet at the Administration Building parking lot, located on Glover Street,
and join the group to see the many wonderful birds found at Jackson Park, Hendersonville’s largest park.8-10:00am.

Are you interested in establishing a meadow, pocket prairie, or native grassland themed planting on your property? Nathan Buchanan, of Wildbud Natives, will cover the whys, wheres, and hows of establishing a meadow-themed planting. From planning, plant selection, preparation approaches, and ways to plant and manage, we’ll give you a basic toolkit to be ready to establish a beautiful, vibrant, and living habitat on your property. This will be a great way to figure out how to incorporate the beautiful native grasses that will be offered at the upcoming Buncombe County Soil and Water seedling sale!
