A Different Thread & The Wilder Flower
Apr 13 @ 4:00 pm
Olivette Riverside Community and Farm

Join us in the beautiful neighborhood of Olivette for an outdoor concert featuring two fantastic folk groups: A Different Thread and The Wilder Flower. $25 – Kids are free!

British-American troubadours A Different Thread create richly emotive tapestry of transatlantic folk. Lead singers Robert Jackson (Midlands, UK) and Alicia Best (North Carolina) first met busking in Ireland. Their chance encounter sparked a musical journey that has spanned over nine years, a dozen countries, and two studio albums— capturing the love of two folk singers chasing their dreams on the road.

The Wilder Flower, featuring Danielle Yother on guitar, Molly Johnson on banjo, and Madeline Dierauf on fiddle, encompasses a fresh take on rural Appalachian music. Together they blend modern influences with their deep roots of old time & bluegrass. Their songs are filled with three-part harmonies, tight instrumental blends, and storytelling.

When Naked Giants formed in 2014, the Seattle trio—vocalist/guitarist Grant Mullen, bassist/vocalist Gianni Aiello and drummer Henry LaVallee—were all eighteen years old, and full of the reckless, restless energy of youth. A decade on, both they and the world have changed immensely. Shine Away—the band’s third full-length, following on from 2018’s SLUFF and 2020’s The Shadow—is very much an acknowledgement of that. It’s an album that doesn’t just reflect on the personal life and times of the three of them and the world at large, but casts a discerning, self-reflective eye on what it’s like to be in, and be, Naked Giants. It’s the sound of a band coming into, and becoming, themselves. Of course, that’s a never-ending process, but for the first time in their career, Naked Giants are taking stock of their journey—who and what they were, are, and want to be.

Being Dead — the Austin, TX-based duo consisting of Falcon Bitch and Shmoofy — announces its new album, EELS, out September 27th on Bayonet, lead single/video “Firefighters,” and a fall headline tour. Being Dead’s records are mosaics, technicolor incantations, each song its own self-contained little universe. And while the dreamlike EELS probes further into the depths of the duo Being Dead’s psyche, it is, most importantly, a 16-track record that is genuinely unpredictable from one track to the next. It’s a joyous and unexpected trip helmed by two true-blue freak bitch besties holed up in a lil’ house in the heart of Austin, Texas.

WNC Debut – Ariella & Nicolaas
Apr 17 @ 7:00 pm – 8:15 pm
Mars Landing Galleries

Vocalist Ariella McManus and guitarist Nicolaas Kraster define musical versatility. Their performances can bounce from soul, blues, jazz, flamenco, and world music, both within their original tunes and unique interpretations of popular fare. The duo recently moved from Florida to Greenville, S.C., and will make their Western North Carolina debut performance this evening. Ariella & Nicolaas have performed at the Blue Note in New York City and Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh, Scotland, while Ariella has performed with famed producer Fabrice Dupont and legendary bassist Victor Wooten, among many others. Etta James and Amy Winehouse shape Ariella’s vocal style, while Nicolaas cites Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucía and American blues icon Roy Buchanan among his influences. For this performance expect a concert with varied styles and paces, a mix of known favorites peppered with infectious original compositions. This is a seated performance.

You get older, you have a family, and you start to slow down—that’s how things are supposed to go, right? Not for Montreal band Corridor, who have returned on their fourth album Mimi with a sound and style that’s more widescreen and expansive than anything that’s preceded it. The follow-up to 2019’s Junior is a huge step forward for the band, as the members themselves have undergone the type of personal changes that accompany the passage of time; even as these eight songs reflect a newfound and contemplative maturity, however, Corridor are branching out more than ever with music that’s richly detailed, resulting in a record that feels like a fresh break for a band that’s already established themselves as forward-thinkers.

Klezmer Cine Concert

April 22, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.

JSCA and The Center for Jewish Studies at UNCA present the silent film The Ancient Lawwith live original music composed and performed by world-renowned klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals and celebrated silent film pianist Donald Sosin. The Ancient Law (Das alte Gesetz) is an important piece of German-Jewish cinematic history, contrasting the closed world of an Eastern European shtetl with the liberal mores of 1860s Vienna. With its historically authentic set design and ensemble of prominent actors, The Ancient Law is an outstanding example of the creativity of Jewish filmmakers in 1920s Germany. Beautifully restored by Deutsche Kinemathek, the story is reminiscent of Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, which was made four years later.

The film is 2 hrs, 15 min with no intermission and English subtitles. For questions and more information please email [email protected].

The Mystery Lights story begins in 2004 in the small town of Salinas, California when friends Michael Brandon and Luis Alfonso — whose shared fondness for groups like The Mc5, Velvet Underground, Dead Moon, and The Fall (to name a few) — joined forces to craft their own brand of unhinged rock and roll. From there they spent the better part of 10 years touring relentlessly before migrating to Queens, New York in 2014.

The Learning Garden presents: Growing Vegetables in Containers
Apr 24 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am
Buncombe County Extension Office — Learning Garden

This is an in-person program, held at The Learning Garden

Program: Growing Vegetables in Containers

Presenter: Barb Harrison, Extension Master GardenerSM volunteers

Program Description: So, you don’t have a lot of space to grow fresh vegetables. Growing vegetables in containers is an easy way to have fresh vegetables all through the summer. If you only have a small space to work with such as a patio, balcony, alleyway, sidewalk or even a rooftop, you can still grow a bountiful garden choosing the right variety of vegetable plants.

We will cover types of containers that work best for vegetables, sun requirements which impacts what vegetables you can grow, growing media, watering, the best vegetables to grow in containers, and the benefits of mulch and a fertilization plan.

After a brief presentation we will then visit the Vegetable Garden and plant some vegetables in containers while reviewing the basic principles.

Portions of this program may be held outside; please dress appropriately for the weather. The classroom size is limited so register to reserve your seat!

The talk is free, but seating is limited and registration using Eventbrite is required.

If you have questions, contact the Buncombe County Extension office at 828-255-5522.
