Public Hearing: Demand Low Energy Bills and Clean Energy
Oct 15 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
The Lonnie Hamilton Public Service Building

As you have probably heard, South Carolina’s energy regulator–the Public Service Commission (PSC)–will be hearing a very important case in November to decide the future of the abandoned V.C. Summer nuclear project and SCE&G’s proposed merger with Dominion Energy, which will shape South Carolina’s energy future for decades.

Given the importance of this case, the PSC wants to hear from YOU at the public hearing next Monday, October 15 in North Charleston.

The PSC is ready to take your comments on the record, so please attend this hearing and let them know about your vision for South Carolina’s energy future. Please make sure you show up and take part!

*Here are some talking points to consider including in your comments:

– Don’t make us pay for a half-built nuclear plant that will never be finished. The shareholders should pay for their failed investment, not the customers who never asked for this.
– No more risky mega-projects: Going forward, make the utility choose energy efficiency and renewable energy whenever they are cheaper than utility power sources.
– No gimmicks: You should choose the energy future for South Carolina that is the lowest-cost option overall, even if it doesn’t provide the biggest upfront rebate.
– No self-dealing: Don’t let Dominion buy natural gas from itself unless it is the most affordable option.

*If you can’t make it to the meeting, please take a minute to submit your comment to the PSC by email at [email protected] and include “Docket 2017-370-E” in the subject line.*

If you have any questions, please reach out to Chris Carnevale at [email protected].

Comedy at Fleetwood’s: Cliff Cash
Oct 15 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Fleetwood's

Cliff Cash’s style of comedy truly embodies the “new south” and plays as well in New York City as it does in Nashville. It’s a voice of the south yearning to be seen as more than camouflage and racism, a generation of young Americans bucking the often archaic values and dogma they were raised on. His brand of humor fearlessly tackles subjects of racism, homophobia, greed, war, loss, death, divorce and the danger of ignorance in pop culture and music. One moment he’s using a satirical uber conservative redneck character to illuminate the fallacies of the far right talking points. The next moment he cleverly dissects some of today’s most absurd rap lyrics. Cash remains dynamic and unique from the time he steps on stage until he says goodnight. When he’s not on stage, Cliff spends most of his time in nature. He’s on a mission to see #everynationalpark and put a million miles on his Mercedes wagon that he essentially lives in #miIlionmilemercedes. In 7 short years Cash has racked up an impressive list of credits for a comic not living in a major market.

Get Down + Dirty Game Night: Cards Against Humanity
Oct 15 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
District Wine Bar

Is your head usually in the gutter? Join us every 1st/3rd/5th Mondays for Cards Against Humanity! Our very own Zach Gallman will be hosting this debaucherously fun time as your team tries to prove you have the sickest minds of them all. Whoever gets the most cards that Zach selects as the most vile, futile, and infantile wins bragging rights to all their friends and coworkers.

*Free to Enter
*Wine and Beer specials
*Fun and fabulous prizes

Rules of Engagement:
Teams will be dealt a handful of white cards from the game. Zach will read the black card aloud. Each player from the team will pick a card from their hand and share it with their table. Each team will then have 1 minute to choose one card that will best the rest with their depravity.

Zach then will collect each team’s submission [or dominance] and read the black card against their white card. Zach will then select his favorite selection as the winner and the team will receive the black card for that round.

Final Round will be the ‘Happy Ending’ variant from the official rules. “Make a Haiku” Black Card will be played to end the game. This is the official ceremonial ending of a good game of Cards Against Humanity, (Note: Haikus don’t need to follow the 5-7-5 form. They just have to be read dramatically). This will be worth 5 points!

After the haiku has been laid down and won, all the black cards will be tallied and the team with the most points wins!

Hippo Campus is a band from St. Paul, Minnesota. Formed in 2013, prior to graduating from performing arts high school, the band started on a break out trajectory following a series of talked-about performances at SXSW. This was immediately followed by their network television debut on Conan. They’ve since risen to the forefront of their genre on the backs of relentless touring and the strength of their debut album ‘landmark’.

In October 2017, the band released their self-produced EP ‘warm glow’ as an ode to loyalty and self- preservation. “We had tunes that didn’t fit on ‘landmark’ but took on a life of their own.” The EP was recorded at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls and mixed by ‘landmark’ collaborator BJ Burton.

The band has been working on their second full length studio album since March of 2018.

Valley Maker w/ Gold Light & Snakemusck, Grace Joyner *Free Mon!
Oct 15 @ 9:00 pm – Oct 16 @ 12:00 am
The Mothlight

Valley Maker
w/ Gold Light & Snakemusk, Grace Joyner
at The Mothlight
October 15th
Doors 8pm / *no cover*

On Valley Maker’s second full-length album, Rhododendron, songwriter Austin Crane sings about movement – from one kind of belief to another, from place to place, through time. This new record from Crane, a Seattle-based musician and PhD student in Human Geography, reflects both the rootedness and rootlessness that shapes his songwriting on the precipice of his third decade. Like his noted inspirations Jason Molina, Bill Fay, and Gillian Welch before him, he speaks to the strange and transitory ways we mark time through our lives. Years pass and fold in his cosmic American songs.

Crane formed Valley Maker in 2010 with a self-titled collection of songs written for his undergrad thesis project at the University of South Carolina, tracing existential questions around biblical origin narratives, as embedded in his spiritually-infused Southern upbringing. Similar themes shade his vision on Rhododendron, which follows 2015’s When I Was A Child. Prophetic and apocalyptic language shapes Crane’s lyrics, but his outlook is not bound by dogma. Instead, he uses the metaphors of faith to explore the ineffable and to navigate the intersection of belief, time, place, and the political present. Much of the album was written leading up to the 2016 US presidential election and in the months after as Crane was traveling for his PhD research on migration, borders, and humanitarianism. Tellingly, it grapples with what it means to share space with others as popular political discourses veer towards exclusion.

Named for the common plant which springs up in both Crane’s native south and his current home in Washington, Rhododendron speaks to how the places and moments we occupy become reflections of ourselves. In his careful, open-hearted songs, characters move from place to place, traveling through time and over lines on maps, driven to encounter the mysteries of existence and glimpse shared humanity. Though lyrically contemplative, the music floats. Crane’s songs retain their folk-based nature – they are the kind of songs that stand on their own with his lone voice and guitar – but they bloom paired with surprising rhythms and arrangements.

The album was recorded between two locales. In Portland, Oregon, Crane teamed with producer/engineer Chaz Bear of Toro Y Moi. Longtime friends and schoolmates from the University of South Carolina, Bear and Crane laid the groundwork for the record over four days, playing all instruments in tracking four songs between themselves. The record’s remaining songs were tracked in Seattle, Washington with producer/engineer Trevor Spencer (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes). Having worked together on Valley Maker’s previous release, Spencer and Crane’s Rhododendron sessions aimed for imaginative, groove- oriented arrangements that remain concisely in step with the individual songs’ qualities, enlisting
drummer James Barone (Beach House, Tennis) and bassist Eli Thomson (Father John Misty), along with Brandon Camarda on trumpet, and Andrew Swanson on saxophone. Amy Fitchette, a longtime collaborator whose roots with Valley Maker stretch back to the Southeast, provides richly layered vocal harmonies across the album to round out Rhododendron’s lush but spacious sound.

From the streamlined indie rock of opener “A Couple Days” to the swirling psychedelia of “Be Born Today,” from the soulful horns of “Rise Up” to the ambient touches of closer “River Bend My Mind,” the album demonstrates Crane’s distilled approach, his solidly built songs blooming with tasteful arrangements and touches. Out October 12, 2018 on Frenchkiss Records, Rhododendron is an album
about transition, about leaving, but also arriving, a document of the journeys in-between.

Eliada’s Annual Corn Maze
Oct 15 @ 9:29 pm

This year, Eliada will maintain some beloved attractions including the tractor ride, which now drives all the way around the Corn Maze, jumping pillow, corn kernel sand box, spider web climber, tube slides, and corn cannons.

Eliada is pleased to announce that the corn planted in the field is Non-GMO, and that Eliada used all natural fertilizers to help the corn grow.
The Corn Maze raises $100,000 for the agency every year, and we have come to rely on this event to support our programs,” says Davis-Bryant. “I never thought I’d have a job in which I relied on a field of corn growing! Changing up how we planted the corn field meant a lot to us, but was also a risk. I am proud of the agency for engaging in this kind of risk taking. The corn has grown beautifully, and we can be proud of the ways we have improved the event for the long-term sustainability of our land.
This year, Eliada is also adding beer and cider sales to the makeup of the event.

This option, available to guests only on weekends (Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sunday afternoons), will help the agency increase revenue to support the growing needs children and youth face in our community. Eliada is excited to work with local and national partners to provide an array of beer and cider options!

Reclaimed Creations
Oct 16 @ 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
NC Arboretum

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.

About the Artist

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.

My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

A Sense of Place: Interpretations by Kari Morton and Lauren Rutten
Oct 16 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Flow Gallery

Show runs through November 7
Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10am – 4pm

This beautiful exhibit celebrates the works of photographer Lauren Rutten and quilter Kari Morton. What these two artists share in common are a partnership in the five-woman, artist-owned Flow Gallery in historic downtown Marshall, and a deep love of Madison County, their newly chosen home.

In 2015, Lauren and her husband Andy, traveled the US for one year searching for a home. “From the very moment I arrived in Marshall while on this journey, I had a sense of having dreamt of this place since childhood – I knew this was where I wanted to be.

I have found that my life here is not confined within four walls, so I’m very interested in reflections, when the light shines through a structure, or a barn begins to dilapidate so the outside and inside merge.

Marshall finds itself in a season of change. Many families who are moving here to homestead live alongside families who have farmed here for generations. This collection hopes to show the range of those who have come to call Marshall home, as well as the hard reality of homesteading and its immense beauty, which are in direct relationship with each other here. In this land I dig my hands in the earth and muddy my feet on the ground, while at the same time experiencing the transcendence of being and connecting to so much beyond my body. I hope those who view these photos might experience this too.”

Kari and her husband, Mike, moved to Madison County in 2012, after having lived a fairly nomadic life. They decided Madison County was the place to put down roots and call home.

“This collection is inspired by my immediate world, the things I live with and the things I see – the garden in my front yard, the chickens in the back yard, the buildings in downtown Marshall, where I spend many hours working at Flow and serving as a guardian ad litem in the county courthouse. Each of my pieces tell a story of connection, to my community, to my world. I love sharing this part of myself with others.”

Flow Gallery is located on Main Street in the historic, picturesque town of Marshall, which lies along the French Broad River, just 25 minutes north of Asheville, NC. The gallery is in its 8th year of business and showcases the work of over 65 talented, regional artists.

In Times of Seismic Sorrows
Oct 16 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Center for Craft

When reflecting on the current state of the environment, it seems that we have entered into times of seismic sorrows. Carbon emissions, water pollution, fracking, and changing climate patterns all point to a troubling reality with serious consequences for human and non-human populations. Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
