The amount of sun or shade in your garden will change as the sun moves across the sky during the day and with the seasons. By knowing how much sun the garden gets, you can better plan where your plants will thrive. In this video, Kay shows you how to create a “Sun Map” and a “Sun Chart” to record the sun and shade patterns in your garden. Using these simple tools will help you make better plant selections and reward you with better results.

The Battery Park end of the Grove Arcade is home to the Makers Market, an outdoor bazaar with a dozen stalls filled by artisans selling their craft directly to the public. The market is now accepting vendor applications for local artist to sell their wares, and the application fee is currently waived due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you are a renter in North Carolina facing eviction due to COVID-19 economic impacts, there may be resources available to you.
Rental and Utility Assistance
If you were unable to pay your rent and/or utilities due to COVID-19 or its economic impacts, you may qualify for assistance. Call NC 2-1-1 to learn of resources in your community for emergency needs, including rental and utility assistance.
What: Local musicians, singers, callers, and technicians have given us joy as they shared their love of music and dance with us. We now ask our community to return that joy as they struggle financially during this difficult time by donating to our “Spread the Joy” fundraiser.
Who: All donations will be paid directly and equally to local talent. Your contributions will support local callers, musicians, and technicians who participated, a minimum of 4 times, either in the past year (March 2019 – March 2020) or were scheduled in the near future (March – June 2020) for OFB events and who indicated a financial need to the OFB Board.
When: The OFB will distribute donations on a regular basis while dances continue to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so please give early and often. Consider donating the price you would have paid for admission to the dances for you, maybe several friends, and remembering that the dances were cancelled back in early March.

You don’t need to give up your fitness or workout routine just because COVID-19 has you spending more time at home. If you’ve got a library card and access to WiFi, it’s easy to stay active with digital resources. The Y’s childcare programs vary by school system and are subject to change. Here’s an overview:
- Asheville City Schools
As of July 23, ACS plans to reopen in Plan C for all grades for the first nine weeks of school. During this time, the Y will operate “School’s Out” care at the YMCA Youth Services Center for ACS students in K-5. - Buncombe County Schools
As of July 28, BCS will implement an enhanced version of Plan B. After one week in Plan B for onboarding and orientation, all K-8 students will switch to Plan C until Sept. 28. During Plan B weeks, the Y will offer onsite afterschool programs as well as full-day care at the YMCA Youth Services Center at Beaverdam and the Reuter Family YMCA. During Plan C the Y will operate “School’s Out” locations in the Roberson, Reynolds, Enka, and North Buncombe districts. - Henderson County Public Schools
As of July 20, HCPS will reopen in Plan C for all grades for the first six weeks of the school year. Under Plan C, the Y will offer full-day care at the UNC Asheville Kellogg Center. When HCPS moves to Plan B, the Y will offer afterschool and full-day care at the Kellogg Center. -
Hours of operations will vary by school system, and will adjust to meet local school day requirements. The Y will provide afterschool care during Plan B weeks. During Plan B and Plan C weeks, the Y will also offer full-day care.Families can sign up for afterschool care, full-day care, or both. In Buncombe and Henderson, afterschool is $95/week per child and full-day care is $200.
- Community donations fund scholarships, which are available for each program on a sliding scale.
Please note: Nature Connects®: Art with LEGO® Bricks has been postponed until July; however, the exhibit will have an extended schedule and will be open until November 1. We look forward to seeing you!
The Arboretum is excited to welcome back the widely popular traveling exhibit, Nature Connects®: Art with LEGO® Bricks by Sean Kenney. Featuring 14 larger-than-life-size sculptures place created with nearly 500,000 LEGO Bricks, this family-friendly exhibit draws inspiration from the living world and combines art, play and science to create an inspiring intersection of education, entertainment and the environment. New sculptures include a 5-foot tall colorful peacock, giant dragonfly, bonsai tree and more!
The Fairy trail is open Monday thru Saturday, 9am-4pm. We encourage all visitors to be patient as there will be limits to the number of people allowed on the trail at the same time. While the trail is outdoors, there are some small spaces and we want to ensure our guests and fairies are safe. Please practice appropriate social distancing and bring a mask in case. Masks are not required, but are considerate in a close area. Our restrooms are not open to the public at this time. Please make arrangements prior to visiting.
Rules of the trail:
Do not move or rearrange fairy displays. The fairies are very fond of their own decorating.
Do not leave trash on the trail. Fairies do not like litter in their town.
Please ensure children and pets are supervised at all times. Dogs and loud noises can scare the fairies into hiding.
Do not disturb wildlife or vegetation. The fairies depend on the vegetation to build their homes.
The trail is one way only. Please stay on the trail at all times.

During this 5-week online group class, Ben Brill will cover the fundamentals of ukulele and guitar and teach kids several cool-sounding songs they can play on the instrument right away. The group will even co-create an original song by the end of the class.
*For students interested in guitar, they’ll need to have a simple $10 device called a Capo to play along with the class.
This is a FUN, low-pressure way to have some enjoy music this summer. It’s great if students can attend all 5 classes, but they still can drop in any day and learn.
The event will happen weekly on Tuesday’s at 11 AM, starting July 7th, 2020. If you don’t yet own an instrument, Ben can make some suggestions. The cost of the sessions is $20 per class and can be paid upfront (all classes), OR per session.

Reopening on the week of August 3 under limited hours, the Center is offering free, unguided visits and affordable tours of its exhibitions to the public. Guests can pre-register for a 30-minute visit to explore the current exhibitions, learn more about the Center’s national impact in their Craft Research Fund Study Collection, and enjoy interactive activities.
The Computer Pays its Debt: Women, Textiles, and Technology, 1965-1985, illuminates the direct connection between computing technology and weaving, and is now on view at the Center for Craft following a three-month closure due to the coronavirus pandemic. Viewable by pre-registration starting August 4, the show positions women who worked with technology and textiles at the heart of the information age. Kayleigh Perkov, 2020 Curatorial Fellow, drew the exhibition’s title and theme from a 1966 New York Times interview with IBM computer scientist and weaver Janice Lourie, creator of the Textile Graphics software, in which she argues that it was “about time that [computing’s] debt to the weaving trade was paid back.”
The statement links computers to the nineteenth-century Jacquard Loom, which used punch cards as proto-programming. The loom directly influenced Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace, considered the first programmer, when they invented the analytical engine – the precursor to our modern computers – in the nineteenth century. Perkov and the ten renowned artists in the exhibition, including Lourie, Sonia Sheridan, Sonya Rapoport, and Lia Cook, recenter the role of women in technology by elevating other voices and histories beyond Lovelace, offering up new ways of seeing the relationship between identity, creativity, and technology.
This is the first exhibition from this year’s 2020 Curatorial Fellowship recipients. Each year, the Curatorial Fellowship recognizes up-and-coming curators working at the cutting edge of craft. Three recipients organize shows at the Center for Craft to Asheville as part of the Center’s larger conversation around craft and its evolution.
Center for Craft is monitoring the effects of COVID-19 on the community and following the instruction of federal, state, and local health departments. Our top priority is always the health and safety of our staff, coworkers, and visitors. At this time, the Center will only allow a maximum of five guests in its public space at a time and will require the use of masks or face coverings by all visitors.
Buncombe County Public Libraries will be opening three additional locations for curbside pickup service, the Fairview, Leicester, and Oakley/South Asheville branches. These locations will operate from 1-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, in addition to our current curbside pickup service locations at the Black Mountain, North Asheville, South Buncombe, and West Asheville locations. We have been working hard to establish Emergency Safety Guidelines in order to safely operate during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s important for all to remember that we are able to be open because we are an open-air grocery store, not a social gathering.

With COVID restrictions relaxing a bit, we are going to be starting a new round of group classes!
Our group classes will focus on basic obedience and will provide important information about your dog’s behavior so you can implement new practices at home. We cover topics such as leash manners, forms of stay, coming when called and more. Dogs four months and older are welcome!
Each class is followed by a brief, structured socialization period. Any dog enrolled is invited to stay after class for supervised social play opportunities.
Classes must have at least 3 dogs signed up for the class to be held. If more than 6 dogs are signed up, we will split in to separate time slots so that each individual will receive adequate attention from the trainer and maintain social distancing.
The class will meet every Tuesday at 6pm for 6 weeks and the cost is $180 or you can pay by the class for $35. Please arrive 15 minutes early for the first class to fill out paperwork as needed.

Cancer, a survivorship series for young women affected by breast cancer, to a virtual platform. The
series will take place throughout the month of August and will provide answers and resources on
some of the most common concerns for young women diagnosed with breast cancer before the age
of 45. Topics include sex and intimacy, early menopause, the long-term effects of treatment and selfcare after breast cancer.
