The Calidore String Quartet’s “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct” (New York Times) and “balance of intellect and expression” (Los Angeles Times) has won them accolades across the globe and firmly established them as one of the finest chamber music ensembles performing today. The Quartet made international headlines as the winner of the $100,000 Grand-Prize of the 2016 and inaugural M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition, the largest prize for chamber music in the world.
A family holiday tradition comes to life in “A Rocky Mountain Christmas” as Jim Curry performs the music from John Denver’s many Christmas Television specials and Christmas Music collections. White Horse Black Mountain Features Jazz Vocalist Maddy Winer
Maddy Winer and celebrated jazz guitarist Vince Lewis reunite at the White Horse Black Mountain, On December 5, 2018 at 7:00PM. Maddy and Vince will pay tribute to the artists whose popular songs shaped Americas musical identity – Great American Songbook favorites spanning the era of George Gershwin to Bill Joel. Recording artist Maddy Winer is known for her effortless interpretation and jazz styling of the Great American Songbook. Maddy has headlined concerts throughout the U.S. and Canada including New York’s prestigious Lincoln Center. She is also a featured performer on the popular PBS special “Loonis McGlohon & Friends.” Maddy has appeared with countless jazz legends including Dave Brubeck, David Sanborn, Cyrus Chestnut, Joe Sample, George Shearing, Ellis Marsalis and Al Jarreau.
Her latest CD CROSSROADS features Maddy with legendary jazz guitarist Vince Lewis. The free-flowing musical interaction translates into the energy and excitement of a live performance, as opposed to just another recording session.
“Crossroads takes the listener on a musical journey of timeless standards representing the heart and soul of the Great American Songbook,” says Maddy. “I have always had a passion for the works of Antonio Carlos Jobim and included two of his classics that I love to sing. Come and meet the man behind some of the best known brand icons in the world.
Pat will be discussing the history and importance of brand characters and how they become the heart and soul of a brand.
Pat was also a designer on seven TV series including Disney’s “Doug,” MTV’s “Daria,” Disney Channel’s “STANLEY,” “JoJo’s Circus,” and “PB & J Otter,” CN’s “Sheep In Big City,” and “Codename: Kids Next Door.” He was the Co-Creator of Sesame Studios web-series “Lili and Torto’s Opposite Show,” and Exec Producer of Starz web-series “Captain Cornelius Cartoon’s Cartoon Lagoon.”

The Saint Nicholas Project provides Christmas gifts, clothes, food, and other items to children and families in our community to help ensure that their Holidays are a bit brighter and provide hope for the coming year.

This symphonic winds concert will include family- friendly pieces that are staples of the holidays, such as Sleigh Ride and A Christmas Festival by Leroy Anderson, Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Up On A Housetop, and Chanukah Celebration. We will have a sing-along segment. And to top it off, we will have a handbell choir playing with the band! You read that right – Jubilee Handbells from First Methodist Church of Hendersonville will play during our concert as well! You won’t want to miss this! Such great “sound candy” for your ears! Our concert will be performed on the campus of UNCA at Lipinsky Hall on Sunday, December 16 at 3:30 PM.
Sierra Hull is a singer, mandolinist and former child prodigy who signed with Rounder at age 13 and distinguished herself by becoming the first bluegrass musician to receive a Presidential Scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Though she is best known for her work as a mandolin player, Hull is also respected as a composer and lyricist, having worked closely with 15-time Grammy Award-Winner, Bela Fleck. And now, Sierra invites everyone to enjoy the musical sounds of a Bluegrass Christmas celebration.

Founded in Paris in 2009, Trio Karénine is lauded for its musical integrity and joie de vivre by critics and audiences alike. Join The Collider for inspiring evening, featuring an exciting adventure-travel documentary from award-winning producer & director Garrett Martin. “Unbounded: A Journey into Patagonia” follows a young, unaided crew of four as they hike and packraft for four months into the infinite region known as Patagonia.
The event will be held at The Collider in downtown Asheville on January 31, 2019, with proceeds benefiting our Thomas R. Karl Internship Program. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the film will begin at 7:00pm. The 70 minute film follows with a panel discussion with Martin, founder of video production company VentureLife Films, an Asheville-based independent film production and environmental media company. Other panel guests will be announced soon.
Tickets are $20 per person, $15 for active Friends of The Collider*, or free with the purchase of a one-year Friends of The Collider gift. The crew’s journey in “Unbounded” is based along the Greater Patagonian Trail, a relatively unknown route that is now the longest continual trail in South America. The film focuses on discovering the indescribable factors of the regions, learning the history and culture of people living amongst the Andes Mountains, and bringing to light the incredible beauty of the area – all in an effort to help raise awareness of the need to preserve this untamed, but delicate, environment. Despite the crew’s lack of experience and support, they manage to document awe-inspiring landscapes and people of the region, interviewing top environmentalists across Chile, and trekking across 700 km of one of the roughest and most unforgiving regions in the world.
The Thomas R. Karl Internship Program was established in honor of Tom Karl upon his retirement as Director of NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. This program provides semester-long internships for undergraduates seeking to enter this growing field. All proceeds of this event directly benefit this internship program and will fund more opportunities for students to work with the climate solution providers that are members of The Collider.
Balsam Range is; Buddy Melton (fiddle, lead and tenor vocals), Darren Nicholson (mandolin, octave mandolin, lead vocals, baritone and low tenor vocals), Dr. Marc Pruett (banjo), Tim Surrett (bass, dobro, baritone and lead vocals), and Caleb Smith (guitar, lead & baritone vocals). The five original members are all acoustic musicians and singers from western North Carolina. They thoughtfully and respectfully adopted the name of a majestic range of mountains that surround part of their home county of Haywood, NC where the Great Smoky Mountains meet the Blue Ridge, the Great Balsam Range. The group’s ascent to the top of the Bluegrass world has left a well-marked trail of success since the band’s inception in 2007. One of the genre’s most award-winning artists in recent years, they have garnered ten International Bluegrass Music Association Awards on the heels of six critically acclaimed albums. Balsam Range has left audiences spellbound while headlining major festivals from coast to coast, selling out venues across the nation, and appearing multiple times at the Grand Ole Opry.
