Snuggle Movie Night
Feb 26 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
North Asheville Address sent in confirmation email

Snuggle Movie Night- Sat Feb 26th

Some folks have expressed interest in movie nights so lets try it out. We will still do introductions, set the boundaries for the evening, and do an icebreaker. Then it will be movie time. We will be watching David Attenborough’s “A Life on Our Planet” which is just under an hour and a half). After the movie people can continue cuddling).

This will be an indoor event. DO NOT ATTEND if you or someone you are physically close with is sick or has increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19. For now, we are requiring people who attend to be vaccinated and encouraging mask wearing. After you register please email us a pic of your vax card.

This is a non-sexual touch based event that invites participants to explore platonic intimacy with like-minded people in an environment that upholds personal boundaries and respect through a supportive framework of mutual agreements that maximize safety and create a space of easy openness and compassionate connection.

At this event we have the chance to normalize touch and intimacy with clear boundaries; this is a space for respectful, consent-based touch. We allow ourselves to be seen. We have fun. We get our touch needs met.

We welcome people of all backgrounds, genders, ethnicities, economic statuses, races, spiritual or religious beliefs, sizes, and ages (children welcome; parents/guardians must keep your eyes on your children and be responsible for them).

THE RULES OF CUDDLING

1. Clothes stay on for the whole event.

2. You do not have to touch anyone.

3. You must ask permission and receive a verbal YES before you touch anyone. Please be specific in your requests.

4. If you feel a yes, say YES. If you feel a no, say NO. If you’re a maybe, say NO. You can always change your mind.

5. Get your facilitator or assistant if you have a question or concern, or if you need assistance with anything during the event.

6. Talking, laughter, silence, silliness, stillness, and crying are welcome.

WHY CUDDLE?

Touch is a basic human need, and many of us do not get enough; most people don’t even know they are missing touch, or have a way to ask for touch without sexualizing it. We believe deeply in the power of touch, and the importance of communication and consent in creating a safe space for touch.

CUDDLING WITH STRANGERS

Cuddling with strangers sounds weird or scary to most people. “Will I like it?” “What if someone wants to touch me and I don’t want to?” “What if I say yes and it’s not what I want?” “What if I really want to touch someone and they say no?” These are all normal questions. The answer is that this is a space created to ask for exactly what you want, and receive NOTHING you don’t want. Many people start out nervous at a cuddle event. Most are really, really glad they came.

ETIQUETTE

  • ARRIVE ON TIME: It is important that all participants arrive before the Welcome Circle. The Welcome Circle serves the purpose of creating the safe space for consensual, non-sexual touch between participants and making sure that everyone is informed about consent.
  • Please be free of strong scents; many folks would rather not be close to someone who smells of cigarettes, perfume, or essential oils. Your clean self is a good smell!
  • BE SOBER: Please do not drink or smoke before or at this event.

WHAT TO BRING: The only thing that you are required to bring is a clean and sober you.

We take individual and group safety seriously! if you experience, see, or know that one of our participants is not safe to be at a touch based event we want to know about it. We are committed to doing our best to create a safe environment which means that if someone is causing harm (physical or mental) that person is not welcome here (this includes harm that takes place outside of our events). We stand behind survivors and know that some of our participants are here to heal from touch based trauma.

Film: ENDURING CARE
Mar 6 @ 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Asheville Art Museum

The Asheville Art Museum is proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2021 by presenting ENDURING CARE, a video program highlighting strategies of community care within the ongoing HIV epidemic. The program features newly commissioned work by Katherine Cheairs, Cristóbal Guerra, Danny Kilbride, Abdul-Aliy A. Muhammad and Uriah Bussey, Beto Pérez, Steed Taylor, and J Triangular and the Women’s Video Support Project.

From histories of harm reduction and prison activism to the long-term effects of HIV medication, ENDURING CARE centers stories of collective care, mutual aid, and solidarity while pointing to the negligence of governments and non-profits. The program’s title suggests a dual meaning, honoring the perseverance and commitment of care workers yet also addressing the potential for harm from medications and healthcare providers. ENDURING CARE disrupts the assumption that an epidemic can be solved with pharmaceuticals alone, recasting community work as a lasting form of medicine.

Visual AIDS is a New York-based non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over.

Presented in conjunction with Ruminations on MemoryGenerous funding for exhibition programming provided by Art Bridges.

Women’s Adventure Film Tour 2022

Women's Adventure Film Tour 2022 - Highland Brewing Co

PREVIOUS YEARS EVENTS HAVE SOLD OUT. CONSIDER PURCHASING IN ADVANCE, AS DOOR SALES WILL BE LIMITED, OR NOT AVAILABLE AT ALL!

Created and produced by Adventure Entertainment, this is Australia’s original women’s adventure film tour. This short film festival is a celebration of the inspiring women around us who are doing extraordinary things in the name of adventure.

Once again, the evening’s guest emcee is Asheville local, business owner and previous holder of the Fastest Known Time on the Appalachian Trail, Jennifer Pharr Davis. Blue Ridge Hiking Company and She Jumps will be onsite with information and volunteers to answer all of your adventure questions!

Every year, our selection of unique films are carefully chosen to show women achieving their personally adventurous goals. Being adventurous doesn’t always have to mean being the fastest, going the highest or doing the most extreme things. Adventure for most of us is just stepping outside of our comfort zones and climbing our own personal Mt Everest. The films showcase real stories about women from a variety of cultures and sports around the world. We aim for the festival to be enjoyed by women, children and men of all ages.

This year’s line-up features a diverse set of films with women of all ages including Australian Olympic champion Torah Bright, ultra trail running champion Lucy Bartholomew and many more, including women in climbing, distance swimming and mountain biking. The official WOMEN’S ADVENTURE FILM TOUR line up includes 7 short films in the 2 hour set.

All ticket buyers will have the opportunity to enter an awesome prize draw from the WOMEN’S ADVENTURE FILM TOUR official partners, including Flikr*, Cee Coach and others.

The WOMEN’S ADVENTURE FILM TOUR is exempt from classification, but the films are suitable for the entire family and would normally achieve a PG-13 rating, though, there might be some instances of “spicy” language peppered throughout.

2022 Campaign to Save Lives
Mar 15 all-day
online

National Doctors’ Day Is March 30

Support the 2022 Campaign to Save Lives in honor of our physicians, nurses, and care teams

When you give to the 2022 Campaign to Save Lives, you’ll have an opportunity to send a special note of gratitude to the extraordinary physicians, nurses, and care teams at Pardee in honor of National Doctors’ Day. These are people like …

Erik Olsson, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon who became a doctor because he wanted to help people return to healthy, active lifestyles. “I enjoy taking care of patients with simple and complex cervical spine issues and seeing them regain function that is often lost due to compression of nerves and/or the spinal cord,” says Dr. Olsson. “Spine surgery is the most complex surgery being performed at Pardee, and private donations can help support technology to make these procedures safer and less invasive.”

Navin Anthony 2

“Without donations, Pardee would not have the equipment they need and their ability to bring in high-level experts, such as Dr. Olsson, would be diminished.”
– Bill Brotherton, patient of Dr. Olsson

Navin Anthony 3

As an orthopedic spine surgeon, Keith Maxwell, MD, is deeply devoted to the treatment and well-being of his patients. “My approach to practicing medicine involves putting the patient first,” says Dr. Maxwell. “Becoming a friend to my patient … working with them together to develop a plan that’s best for their health and their condition. I try to treat all my patients as if they’re people that I’m related to or I go to church with. That makes me accountable, and I like that.”

Navin Anthony 4

“I was diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis. I chose to go see Dr. Maxwell. I knew several of his patients, and they all highly recommended him. I liked him from the beginning. He is so compassionate about his patients and strives to help them maintain their quality of life. I cannot say enough about him.”
– Tina Penland, patient of Dr. Maxwell

Fit 50 Challenge

Ashevillians looking for motivation to get moving during colder months can join friends, neighbors, and other community members as the city runs, walks, and rolls during the free Fit 50 Challenge. Back for its second year, Asheville Parks & Recreation’s challenge allows participants to track their progress as they complete 50 miles between February 1-April 1.

“Taking a brisk 30 minute walk, hike, ride, or stroll each day has tremendous benefits,” according to Alic Wynn, Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center Facility Supervisor and Certified Personal Trainer. “The Fit 50 Challenge offers a great opportunity to improve or maintain overall health and wellness goals. The challenge builds on the encouragement and spirit of our community in a way that shows we all want to see each other succeed.”

Running, walking, and rolling around Asheville allow residents to explore, connect, and discover. These benefits are great on their own, but Fit 50 Challenge participants can also win prizes. All registrants receive an exclusive sticker to display as a badge of honor on a favorite water bottle, bike, or notebook. The five challengers who record the top five mileage totals win prize packs.  Of those, the two with the most total miles win an Apple Watch (first place) and AirPods (second place).

Miles can be completed anywhere by running, walking, jogging, skating, cycling, or whichever way challengers choose. With numerous natural surface trails in parks and neighborhoods, treadmills and tracks at community centers, self-guided tours such as the Urban Trail, and 8 miles of paved greenways, the City of Asheville offers a variety of ways to enjoy the city at no cost.
