Calling all disc golf enthusiasts! Aston Park now has a disc golf course ready to challenge players from all skill levels. With 3 different tee-off points at each of the 6 goal baskets, the course maximizes this compact park space to entertain users for a full 18 holes. Come and celebrate the course Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting event Thursday, October 26 3:30-6:30pm featuring live music, a scavenger hunt, prizes, and more! This event is being put on by the South French Broad neighborhood association, which is credited with visioning, planning, and installing the disc golf course using funding from the City’s Neighborhood Matching Grant program and in conjunction with Asheville Parks and Recreation.

Join the Asheville Museum of History Thursday, October 26 at 6pm live in the Reuter Center at UNCA or via Zoom. This event airs live and will be recorded.
Arts and Crafts historian Bruce E. Johnson will share the history behind his book Biltmore Industries and Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers: The Lives and Works of Eleanor Vance and Charlotte Yale. Fresh from the Moody Bible College, young Eleanor Vance and Charlotte Yale arrived in Biltmore Village in 1901 and soon were deeply involved with All Souls’ Church. Drawing upon her extensive training as a woodworker, Vance began teaching young men and women how to construct and carved exquisite walnut serving trays, bookends, bowls, picture frames, hearth brushes, and fireplace bellows.
Edith and George Vanderbilt provided the fledgling Arts and Crafts industry with the workshop space, encouragement, and support necessary for Vance and Yale to open and manage Biltmore Estate Industries in 1905. They soon added the weaving of wool homespun cloth to their inventory in their shop across from the railway depot.
But George Vanderbilt’s unexpected death in 1914 left his widow Edith unprepared to manage their 125,000-acre estate, 250-room house, and all of Biltmore Village. Sensing their time at Biltmore Estate Industries was about to end, in 1915 Vance and Yale moved to Tryon. Two years later, Edith Vanderbilt sold the Industries to Fred L. Seely, president of the Grove Park Inn. In 1917, he began moving the woodworkers and weavers into the five buildings he constructed in what is now Grovewood Village, adjacent to the grounds of the Grove Park Inn.
In Tryon, Vance and Yale again began teaching young men and women not only how to carve walnut bowls, frames, and bookends, but also to make colorful children’s toys. From 1915 until their retirement in 1943, the women led Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers, creating hundreds of carved items and painted toys which have become collectors’ items today.
About the Speaker:
Bruce Johnson moved to North Carolina in 1985 and soon founded the annual National Arts and Crafts Conference and Shows at the historic 1913 Grove Park Inn. In 1910, he was recognized with the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award. For the past ten years he has been gathering research material for his new 200-page, hardback book, which features 239 vintage and color photographs, descriptions of nearly 500 of their works, and fourteen of the identification shopmarks used at Biltmore Estate Industries, Biltmore Industries, and Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers.
Tickets: $5 for AMoH/OLLI members/ $10 for General Admission. We also have no-cost, community-funded tickets available. We want our events to be accessible to as many people as possible. If you are able please consider making a donation along with your ticket purchase. These donations are placed in our Community Fund, which allows us to offer tickets at no cost to those who would not be able to attend otherwise.
Viewing: Registrants will receive a confirmation email with Zoom link with which to view the program. For those attending in person, no further steps are required. This event is held in the Reuter Center at UNCA (300 Campus View Rd, Asheville).

Common Word Community Read: Adam Rothman, Professor of History, Georgetown University

Adam Rothman, professor of History at Georgetown University, will be speaking on Georgetown’s history of enslavement and his current research on Thursday, October 26 at 7 p.m. at the UNC Asheville Reuter Center, Manheimer Room.
Rothman is the director of the Center for the Study of Slavery and Its Legacies and co-editor of the recent book “Facing Georgetown’s History: A Reader on Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation” which details the university’s history of enslavement and its recent efforts to confront its past.
In “I Came As a Shadow,” John Thompson writes about Georgetown’s slaveholding legacy, especially the sale of 272 enslaved people in 1883 that was made to save the financially struggling university. Aside from tracing the descendants of the 272 individuals, Rothman’s research explores how institutions and communities confront their shameful pasts.
This event is part of the Common Word Community Read series, a set of lectures and discussions centered around a shared text with the goal of engaging a collective educational experience. The program is curated by Wiley Cash, New York Times bestselling author, alumnus of the class of 2000, and UNC Asheville’s Executive Director of Literary Arts. The selection for fall 2023 is “I Came As a Shadow” an autobiography by the late John Thompson, the head basketball coach at Georgetown University from 1972 to 1999, where he won the NCAA championship in 1984.

An ACT Youth Production is an immersive performance workshop that is specially tailored for young artists who aspire to learn and grow in the performing arts. This hands-on experience offers a unique opportunity for students to undergo a comprehensive exploration of the theatrical process. Starting with auditions, they are taught how to prepare and present their best selves, and throughout the rehearsal process, students collaborate with the cast in a dynamic and supportive environment. When you sign up to sponsor a child for the holidays, you’ll receive a Wish List that a young person created. Wish Lists include their favorite things, clothing sizes, and most needed and wanted items. The value of a Wish List is around $200. You can divide that cost with friends, or even sponsor several children.
For most of Eliada’s children and youth, the gifts they receive from sponsors are the only gifts they will get during the holiday season.

Cottage wish lists for youth living at Eliada, for example, include toiletries, bedding and towels, books, games, art supplies, suitcases and kitchen utensils. Many children come to Eliada with a few clothes in a garbage bag. Together we can provide them things that every home should have!
Other wish lists are for our Child Development programs, Foster Care program, Farm program, Summer Camp program, and Recreation programs. Our Equine Therapy program also has some needs this holiday season! We never know when we’ll get a call for a child in Foster Care who needs a home immediately. Let’s help Foster Parents provide these children everything they deserve!

Teams divided by ages 6-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 14-16 practice drills for 30 minutes prior to weekly games with two 20 minute halves at Asheville Middle School on 211 South French Broad Avenue.

Instructional five-week clinic with divisions for 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12 year-olds teaches fundamentals through drills and scrimmages at Asheville Middle School on 211 South French Broad Avenue with the intent of building a youth softball program in the future.
A local pro teaches a clinic followed by a nine-hole family fun tournament for beginners ages 8-18 and an 18-hole competitive round for advanced players ages 12-16.

Aisha Adams is the program developer for the Lenoir-Rhyne Equity and Diversity Institute (LREDI). Adams is an influencer with a heart for community economic development who champions social change advocates, thought leaders and courageous disruptors. With her curriculum and leadership, LREDI has trained equity advocates from several states who understand the importance of creating a culture of longevity and inclusivity in their organizations and communities.
In addition to her work with LREDI, Adams is a serial entrepreneur. She is the founder and CEO of the Aisha Adams Media Group and partner organization Equity Over Everything, which advances equity by closing gaps in entrepreneurship and homeownership in low-resource communities. Her other ventures include the Asheville View, a daytime-style talk show that addresses hot button issues in Asheville, and Nappy Thoughts, a personal blog followed by thousands of people on social media. She also manages the Entrepreneurial Accelerator, a business bootcamp that ties fledgling businesses to community resources.

FRESH PRESSED CIDER – We press fresh apple cider every year, comprised of our historical orchard apples on the Old Sherrill’s Inn property and apples from our partner Lyda Farms. This is a raw, unpasteurized product – delicious and changeable as the season, no added sugar or seasonings.

JACKOLANTERN PUMPKINS – We work with several WNC veggie farmers in the area, including Hawkins Farms. We’ll have pumpkins arranged all around the Farm Store to display their beauty AND make sure you get *just the right one*. The seeds are dynamite when roasted, too…

Pumpkin Fest at Silvermont Park, Brevard, NC

Pumpkin Fest is a fun, family friendly and fantastic artistic event or great date night with 18 beautiful artist-designed lighted carved pumpkin displays on a newly-paved short walking trail. The event includes talented local musicians, food trucks and coffee house, games, storytelling, face painting, white squirrel scavenger hunt, games, dress ups, and the Silvermont historic mansion and second floor museum open for tours. New exhibits from 2022 (“Syd’s Silvermont Adventure”) and 2021 (the spectacular “White Squirrel Circus”) are returning, as well as 16 other lighted pumpkin displays such as Butterfly Garden, Pirates Cove, Under the Sea, Witches Garden, Ghost Circle, Totem Garden, and more.
A new 2023 exhibit has been developed by Friends of Silvermont’s Pumpkin-teers: “Land of Waterfalls”, featuring the unique places and features that make Transylvania County so beautiful and special for locals and tourists alike. A new social media photo-op site with a Silvermont Pumpkin Fest background will also be set up between the dress up and face painting areas near the tennis courts. There will be lots of activities for young and old alike- with fun for all ages! Silvermont Park has a newly paved 1/3-mile trail that works much better for strollers, walkers and wheelchairs.
Pumpkin Fest is a Fundraiser for Friends of Silvermont to help maintain and improve the Silvermont Park and the 106-year-old historic mansion, which houses the county senior center and a history museum. Friends of Silvermont was in 1981 to help save the mansion and has continued to make significant financial contributions to both the mansion and park each year.

The 11th Annual Haunted Trail

Asheville Plays is excited to present the 11th annual Haunted Trail, Asheville’s only family friendly haunt! This event is ideal for Halloween lovers of all ages, 3-12 being the suggested age range. The Adventure Center of Asheville will host this one of a kind live outdoor theatrical experience where guests are promised an entirely immersive and interactive spooky night out while also ensuring no contact. Asheville Plays creates a show with a unique perspective on Halloween fun with 15 live action scenes for guests to watch and enjoy. For younger guests who still aren’t sure about being scared, even for fun, a “Sweet Peek Tour’ is offered nightly at 6:45 pm. The trail is actor free at this time so that littles and parents can take a guided tour of the scenes to decide if they would like to re enter the line and receive the full show. The Treetop Adventure Park Aerial Glow Trail is available for guests 4 years or older to enjoy at this event! Looking for a spooky fright? Meet ghosts and ghouls and visions of things that go bump in the night at the Haunted Castle on the Hill. This can’t-miss haunted house tends to be on the spooky side, so it’s not recommended for those who scare easily. For more info, call 828-350-2058.

APR relies on the help of community members to create the Haunted Castle on the Hill atmosphere. If you are 15 years-old or older, you can help with set up, breakdown, or join the Scare Crew (costumes, make-up, and props are provided by APR). Just in time for Halloween, local playwright Will Storrs brings us this World Premiere reimagining Alice and the characters of Lewis Carroll’s story in a seasonally-appropriate way. Sure to be a horribly good time!
All shows will run Fridays through Sundays and all will be presented at 7:30pm and prime seats can be reserved.

Theme Park Transforms from Wild West by Day to Ghost Train at Night
The spooktacular season of Tweetsie’s Ghost Train® Halloween Celebration, a popular fall family tradition, begins Friday, September 22, and continues every Friday and Saturday night through October 28.
Daytime guests can still enjoy all of Tweetsie’s Wild West adventures, rides and attractions. . . but when the sun goes down, the park gets a full makeover complete with costumed characters, decorations, music and Halloween-themed attractions.
Younger children will love the dance parties, trick-or-treat stations, themed photo opportunities, and the Palace Spooktacular Show.
Braver kids and adults will appreciate the scary night-time journey on the Ghost Train, walking through the hallowed halls of the Haunted House and exploring the murky Freaky Forest.
And, everyone will love the park’s most popular amusement rides after dark in the Creepy Carnival.
The park opens at 7:30 pm with the first train scheduled for 8:00 p.m. On October Saturday nights starting on the 14, 21, and 28, the park opens at 7:15 p.m. with the first train scheduled for 7:30 pm.
Tickets are $60 for adults, $40 for children (ages 3-12) and free for children age 2 and under. They are sold in advance for a designated night with a scheduled train ride departure time. A limited number of guests will be admitted each evening, so visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets well beforehand to avoid missing out on all of the spooky fun.

Sponsor a Child:
When you sign up to sponsor a child for the holidays, you’ll receive a Wish List that a young person created. Wish Lists include their favorite things, clothing sizes, and most needed and wanted items. The value of a Wish List is around $200. You can divide that cost with friends, or even sponsor several children.
For most of Eliada’s children and youth, the gifts they receive from sponsors are the only gifts they will get during the holiday season.

We also have Wish Lists which include items that children will need here at Eliada depending on what program they are in.
Cottage wish lists for youth living at Eliada, for example, include toiletries, bedding and towels, books, games, art supplies, suitcases and kitchen utensils. Many children come to Eliada with a few clothes in a garbage bag. Together we can provide them things that every home should have!
Other wish lists are for our Child Development programs, Foster Care program, Farm program, Summer Camp program, and Recreation programs. Our Equine Therapy program also has some needs this holiday season! We never know when we’ll get a call for a child in Foster Care who needs a home immediately. Let’s help Foster Parents provide these children everything they deserve!
Sponsor a last minute wish:
Some youth living at Eliada won’t arrive until right before the holidays! We won’t receive their wish lists until mid-late November. Can you sign up to help one of these teens at the last minute?
If you don’t have time to shop, Eliada will use your donation to purchase gifts for children who may arrive at Eliada very close to Christmas or right after Christmas. It shouldn’t matter when you arrive at Eliada–your wishes should be fulfilled! You can make a donation here. In the comment field, write “holiday wishes.”

Asheville Parks + Recreation Youth Fall + Winter athletic programs + sports leagues

Teams divided by ages 6-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 14-16 practice drills for 30 minutes prior to weekly games with two 20 minute halves at Asheville Middle School on 211 South French Broad Avenue.
Registration ends September 3, clinics begin September 11
Instructional five-week clinic with divisions for 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12 year-olds teaches fundamentals through drills and scrimmages at Asheville Middle School on 211 South French Broad Avenue with the intent of building a youth softball program in the future.
A local pro teaches a clinic followed by a nine-hole family fun tournament for beginners ages 8-18 and an 18-hole competitive round for advanced players ages 12-16.
