The Flat Rock Playhouse is ready to celebrate summer by transporting the beach to the mountains with upcoming Music on the Rock Concert, Carolina Shag!
Celebrating the musical phenomenon that developed in the early 50’s on the Carolina Coasts, Carolina Shag will feature upbeat beach music from artists such as The Embers, The Tams, Chairmen of the Board, The Drifters.

Join Burial Beer at the taproom for a discussion of all things beer and non-beer related. They’ll be joined by TRVE Brewing and Troubadour Maltings from CO, the collaborators for the fifth release of the Ambient Terrain Series.
Tickets are $10 at the door and include a branded glass to keep, access to the talk, and shared beers from TRVE. Tickets will be available starting at 5pm.
Head to The Thirsty Monk Biltmore Park on Tuesday, June 12th at 7pm for Monk Beer Academy. The topic this month will be Fermented Foods and Beer Pairing! Continuing the theme of pairing delicious foods with equally tasty beers, this month they’ve decided to go all in with fermentation. Explore how foods are preserved through fermentation techniques, find out which beer styles are compatible with various types of fermented foods, and discuss why they complement or contrast each other so well.

Join White Labs for a first day of summer celebration! White Labs Asheville’s Education & Engagement Curator, Jo Doyle, is teaming up with Meg Chamberlain “Fermentrix” of Fermenti for an hour and a half pairing session.

Artistic director Heather Maloy’s latest work tells the story of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald’s tragic relationship from their passionate courtship in Alabama, through their stardom at the height of Scott’s literary career, into their never-ending power struggle and eventual decline caused by alcoholism, selfishness and mental illness. Zelda’s Dance will feature the technical prowess of Terpsicorps’ critically acclaimed dancers alongside live music by local pianist Andrew Fletcher and the Firecracker Jazz Band. Also included on the program are works that highlight some of the finest moments of the past 15 seasons including Salvatore Aiello’s Afternoon of a Faun and Heather Maloy’s soulful homage to New Orleans Second Line and the athletic tour de force Le Suil Go.

Nutritious Thoughts is offering two new educational support groups. The Diabetes Education and Support Group is open to members of the community who have diabetes (Type 1, Type 2, or Gestational) and would benefit from extra education and support around this disease. The group will meet for an hour on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 6 to 7 pm at the Nutritious Thoughts office and will include a short education provided by Registered Dietitian, Margaret Ruch, MS, RD, LDN. The gatherings will also include plenty of time for peer support for members to help each other deal with the daily demands of life with diabetes.
“I’m excited to be able to offer this group as there’s a real need for education and support around this issue that is so common in our community,” stated Margaret Ruch, MS, RD, LDN.
The second group is open to all those dealing with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and looking for more comradery and assistance in navigating their relationship with food and PCOS. This group will be led by Registered Dietitian, Katie Rhodes, RD, LDN, and will be held the 4th Wednesday of every month from 6 to 7 pm at Nutritious Thoughts.

This workshop is designed as an introduction to managing photographs on the home PC or MAC computer. It will cover basic computer operation and workflow related to image handling and photo manipulation. Topics include importing photographs into the computer, basic image manipulation in Photoshop Elements, converting Jpeg images to Tiff and uses of each type file, sizes and resolution (dpi/ppi), storing, organizing, and archiving images on the computer, preparing files for email, web page, print output. Participants use Photoshop Elements to improve images by cropping, resizing, color correcting, sharpening, correcting flaws, and much more. A basic understanding of your computer is needed, but no prior Photoshop knowledge is necessary. Full course description is available at www.barnwellphoto.com Preregistration is required. Named by USA Today as one of the Top Twenty Festivals in North Carolina, Folkmoot is a ten-day event, held across the mountains of Western North Carolina in Waynesville, Clyde, Lake Junaluska, Maggie Valley, Canton, Cherokee, Franklin, Hickory, Asheville, and Hendersonville. The 2018 festival dates are July 19 – 29 and feature cultural ambassadors/dance performing groups from Ghana, Italy, Czech Republic, Mexico, Venezuela and Northern Cyprus, Thailand and local Appalachian and Cherokee dancers and musicians.
