Governor Cooper Announces Statewide Stay at Home Order Until April 29
Mar 31 @ 5:00 pm
North Carolina State Government

Governor Roy Cooper ordered people in the state of North Carolina to stay at home for thirty days, until April 29, 2020, in another step to slow the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Governor Cooper’s Executive Order No. 121 takes effect on Monday, March 30 at 5:00 PM and reduces the size of gatherings to 10 people. The Order provides for essential businesses to continue to operate while prioritizing social distancing measures. The Order has the force of law and will be enforced in all 100 counties statewide.

“To continue our aggressive battle against COVID-19, I have signed a Stay at Home Order for the entire state of North Carolina. Though it is difficult we must do this to slow the disease spread,” said Governor Cooper. “We need our medical system to be able to care for the friends and family we know will become seriously ill from the virus.”

The Governor noted today that three North Carolinians have died due to COVID-19 and the state has 763 confirmed cases of the virus in 60 counties. He called on all North Carolinians to protect themselves by staying home and following social distancing guidelines. North Carolina is now considered to have widespread transmission of the virus, which means people who have tested positive cannot trace where they were exposed to the virus.

The Order directs people to stay at home except to visit essential businesses, to exercise outdoors or to help a family member. Specifically, the order bans gatherings of more than 10 people and directs everyone to physically stay at least six feet apart from others.

“I know this order may lead to even more hardship and heartache. Although we are physically apart, we must take this step together in spirit,” Governor Cooper said.

The Governor’s full order is available HEREOpen PDF.

Unless noted in the order, previous closures and orders stand as written as do local government orders in cities and counties. Frequently Asked Questions about the Order can be found HEREOpen PDF.

If you do not think your business is included in the essential services list, and you think it should be, you may apply online at the NC Department of Revenue to be designated essential HERE. Until your exemption is reviewed, you may operate as long as your business can accommodate social distancing in your workplace.

For more information about health recommendations and who is designated at high risk for becoming seriously ill, please visit the CDC’s website at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus and NCDHHS’ website at www.ncdhhs.gov/coronavirus.

2020 HSCC Night Series #1

Highlands Sports Car Club’s Night Series provides an opportunity for competitors to get a mid-week autox fix without taking up an entire day. All events are held on Tuesday evenings at the WNC Agricultural Center located across from Asheville Regional Airport. The same course will be used for all 7 events this season. You must compete in a minimum of 4 events to be eligible for a championship trophy, which will be decided based on points scored in your best 5 events.

The Night Series has been very popular in recent years with entries routinely approaching, and sometimes even breaking 100 drivers. Because of the large turnout combined with the compressed time schedule, we need everyone’s help to pull off a smooth event. That means arriving early enough to get your car registered & tech’ed within the allotted time, having your car ready in the grid before your Run Group starts, and showing up promptly for work assignments.

Event Schedule:

Registration / Check-In: 5:00 – 6:15 pm *

Tech Inspection: 5:00 – 6:15 pm **

Novice Walkthrough: 6:15 pm

Driver’s Meeting: 6:30 pm

First Vehicle Off: 6:45 pm

* Everyone must check-in at the entrance, even if you registered online.

** HSCC now offers an Annual Tech program for our members with at least 2 years of autocross experience. Please contact a club officer for more information. We also honor Annual Tech from surrounding SCCA Regions and other well established independent clubs.

(On-site registration costs an additional $10, regardless of member status. Avoid the fee by registering and paying online right now.)

Becoming a member of HSCC: Click here to join Highlands Sports Car Club online through Motorsport Reg. Once you’ve registered and paid for this Membership Event, please allow up to 24 hours for your membership to be validated. Once validated you will be able to register for our events at the discounted member price.

Additional info: If you have any additional questions about our club or our events, please visit our website. For anyone new to the sport of autocross, we ask that you take a good look at our Novice Guide. And finally, if you still have questions after viewing the above online documentation, please don’t hesitate to ask for help by using the Contact Registrar link on this site, or the contact form on our website.

Women’s History Month Lecture: “Women’s Liberation through a Different Prism – The View from Austin”
Mar 31 @ 6:00 pm
UNC Asheville Highsmith Student Union, Mountain Suites

Visiting scholar Laurie Green will present a lecture, Women’s Liberation through a Different Prism: The View from Austin, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, in the Highsmith Student Union Mountain Suites. This event, part of UNC Asheville’s observance of Women’s History Month, is free and open to everyone. Green is an associate professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin.

About the lecture

Do geography and historical context mean more than we have acknowledged when it comes to narratives of the U.S. Women’s Liberation Movement. Have we accepted narratives that emanate from the urban Northeast and Midwest as universals, rather than particular perspectives? And if so, what are the historical consequences? From the vantage point of students and other activists in 1960s and 1970s’ Austin, Texas, for example, the argument that radical feminists abandoned the New Left to establish their own movement – renditions of which appear in most historical overviews of the Women’s Liberation Movement – may not make sense, nor did such activists look to New York and Chicago feminists as the engines for Roe v. Wade; instead, they looked to themselves as the initiators of the case that went to the Supreme Court.

In 2017, Laurie Green launched the intergenerational Austin Women Activists Oral History Project at the University of Texas, which has brought together students of today and women activists in the 1960s and 1970s, along with faculty and staff from different parts of the university. The project has resulted in a digital oral history collection, a film, and other productions that call some of the now-familiar narratives of the Women’s Liberation Movement into question. Her talk will be based, in part, on this collaborative endeavor.

About the presenter

Laurie Green is an associate professor of history and faculty affiliate at the University of Texas at Austin, in the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, American Studies Department, and African and African Diaspora Studies Department. She is the author of Battling the Plantation Mentality: Memphis and the Black Freedom Struggle, (University of North Carolina, 2007), winner of the 2008 Philip Taft Labor History Award, and co-editor of Precarious Prescriptions: Contested Histories of Race and Health in North America (University of Minnesota Press, 2014). She is completing a book manuscript titled “The Discovery of Hunger in America: A Public Crisis of Race, Health, and American Democracy.”

Visitor Parking on the UNC Asheville Campus – Visitors may park in faculty/staff and non-resident lots from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and all day on weekends, holidays, and campus breaks. Visitors are not permitted to park in resident student lots at any time.

About the Facilitator:

Comments:

“Trey Carland embodies perfectly the quote, “still waters run deep.” I happened upon Trey several years ago through his spiritual awakening group. From this experience, Trey appeared to me as a wise Sage. Trey is accepting and patient with people. His demeanor is calm and loving. For me, it was evident that the stillness of Trey’s soul, is like a shimmering river that runs endlessly, with much depth. With celebration, I am blessed for having him as a friend. ” ~ John K.

Blue Ridge Humane Extends Closures, Still Providing Adoptions
Apr 1 all-day
Blue Ridge Humane

Blue Ridge Humane Society will remain closed to the public for the immediate future due to the ongoing developments of the spread of COVID-19 and at the recommendations of local and national experts. The closures will continued to be evaluated by BRHS staff to determine a safe return to public operation.

Adoptions are still ongoing by appointment only. Interested adopters can view available animals online and fill out the adoption application in order to set up a meeting. The Administrative Office and Blue Ridge Humane Society Thrift Store are closed entirely to the public at this time.

Blue Ridge Humane is still in need of help from our community however. Your support through fosteringdonationssupplies, and adoptions means the world!

BRHS asks that the public monitor its website, www.blueridgehumane.org, and their social media channels for regular updates, as the reduction in services is subject to change based on guidance received from local and national public health officials.

With a potential decrease in staff due to risk of exposure, a probable increase in animals entering shelters, and reduction in income, Blue Ridge Humane asks for the community’s help in the following areas:

  • Foster homes needed: We are seeking foster families who are willing to house animals during a time when our Adoption Center might not be fully staffed to do so. Please consider opening your heart and home to a homeless during this pandemic. We provide food, supplies, and medical care. You provide your lifesaving home and love. Social distancing doesn’t exist when you’re spending your time with a pet in need! Contact [email protected] for more information.

  • Supplies needed: When shopping for supplies, consider adding an extra bag of pet food, a bottle of hand sanitizer, or a package of paper towels for our Adoption Center to your Amazon order. We need them daily to function and are feeling the effects of the surge in their demand. You purchase items from our Amazon Wish List or send a gift card!

  • Adopt: Help us clear our Adoption Center. We currently have amazing pets in our care looking for a home. If you’ve considered adding a four-legged member to your family, now is a great time!

  • Donate: As our revenue stream is limited during this time, consider a monetary donation to help ensure the continuation of animal care of Blue Ridge Humane now only now but in the future.

For more tips on preventing the spread of COVID-19 and preparing a care plan for your pet read our Emergency Plan Preparedness post or for a list of community resources in place to help pet owners during this time read Pet Resources Available.

If you believe in our cause, consider making a donation or learning how to volunteer by visiting the Blue Ridge Humane Society’s website at www.blueridgehumane.org or call (828) 692-2639.

Brass Monkey Photography Online

Hi everyone! I hope that you are staying safe (and sane) in this unprecedented time? I’d like to offer a FREE online class, (absolutely no catch) on getting the most out of your camera.

Do you have a digital camera that you only use in Automatic mode and would like to get more out of it? Have you ever wondered what the different settings are and how they could help you when taking portraits or landscape photographs?

I’d like to set up a few beginner sessions to go over the basics. I will create 60-90 minute segments (via video link) and will look at:

– Aperture
– ISO
– Shutter Speed
– How different lenses impact your photo
– And many more topics

They’ll be in bite size chunks that are more manageable and give you an opportunity to review your notes prior to the next class. The class will be interactive at points too – it’s not just me talking to you via a pre-recorded message. Let’s have some fun together and have you using your camera more this spring/summer!

Respond below and let me know. Please RSVP within 24 hours of the start of each class.

Thanks!

Fantastic Fungi is all about our interconnectedness and the common issues that we face as a species. We know that our biggest defense from these viruses is our own sense of wellbeing, our own immunity and the ability to live from a place of health and wellness both individually and collectively.

Farmers Emergency Fund

Farmers Emergency Fund Online

Farmers Emergency Fund:

For four years we distributed a book scholarship to a child or a grandchild of a farmer majoring in agricultural sciences. However, in 2019, we converted the scholarship fund to an emergency farmers fund due to the overwhelming need of small farmers. The fund covers immediate emergency expenses related to the farm operation and daily necessities. We give special preference to aging farmers in need but are open to providing assistance to young farmers as well. As we did with the past scholarship fund, the farmer’s fund is dedicated to the Honorable J. Richmond Pearson, the first Black Circuit Judge appointed to the Court in Jefferson County (Birmingham), Alabama. Judge Pearson was one of a group of Black lawyers to represent Martin Luther King Jr. and other protester’s jailed during various Civil Rights Movement demonstrations. Judge Pearson’s purpose in life was to improve the lives of the under-served, which is in alignment was F.A.R.M.S. mission. Special thanks to the Pearson family. If you are a farmer in need please complete the form. We only provide assistance to small farmer’s who operate less than 500 acres, have limited resources and reside in the US.
