From rescue vehicles and public works equipment to utility tractors and construction machines, community members have an excellent opportunity to “pull back the curtain” and learn about the equipment and skills required to maintain our cities and towns, foodways, and public safety systems when Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) brings Truck City AVL back to Asheville Outlets on April 15 from 1-4 p.m. This community event is open to the public and free to attend.
Kids and adults can sit in, explore, touch, and ask questions about their favorite trucks and cars in one place. A quiet hour (no horn honking) is scheduled from 1-2 p.m. to provide a positive experience for those with autism, dementia, PTSD, hyposensitivity, and other sensory considerations.
City of Asheville’s Fire, Parks & Recreation, Police, and Public Works departments plan to showcase several vehicles including a sweeper, excavator, and bearcat. Other unique vehicles including Blue Ridge Adventure‘s Mountain to Sea conversion van, a Humvee from the Army, Buncombe County’s emergency medical services vehicle, cranes from Asheville Arborists and Crane & Rigging Company, a concrete mixer from Carolina Ready Mix, and North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission’s fish stocking truck will be on-site, among others. With over 30 vehicles, be sure to plan plenty of time to explore trucks of all shapes and sizes.
Asheville Outlets is located on 800 Brevard Road in Asheville. Truck City AVL takes place rain or shine in the back parking lot near the food court entrance.

Formed in New Jersey by guitarists Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki, the band took a few years to find their flying shape, solidifying into a lineup with Danny’s brother Cesar on drums and Derek Spaldo on bass by mid-2016. Ramping up their acceleration around the time of their 2018 Cosmic Cash debut on Beyond Beyond Is Beyond Records, they’ve blasted through residencies and new songs and sessions and collaborations, relocating to New York, picking up two new members in keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Pat Gubler and bassist Andy Cush, and leaving a trail of live tapes in their wake. This year, they’ve delivered not one but two new albums for BBiB: the sleek and song-oriented Natural Facts and the sprawling improvisatory opus of One Step Behind. 2019 also saw the first performances by the full Garcia Peoples lineup, a six-person behemoth with Spaldo on third guitar.
With a stash of live recordings accumulating at the Live Music Archive, Garcia Peoples’ music is very much a living entity. Since the release of their previous two albums, songs have started to expand, jam suites have grown, and experiments have been undertaken. The first part of 2019 has seen Garcia Peoples back Philadelphia guitarist Chris Forsyth (an expanded Solar Peoples Band has hit double-drummer overdrive several times now), and joined with guitarist Ryley Walker. They’ve improvised on WFMU, and jammed with the sounds of ocean waves and falling rain at strange late night happenings. Probably something else new and wonderful and weird has happened in the Garciaverse since I wrote this.
Whether or not you thought you knew Garcia Peoples’ music, One Step Behind is something new and beautiful, for new heads and old. No matter where you stand–behind, beyond, or another plane altogether–One Step Behind is ready. For those about to get on the Bus, we salute you.

Edvard Tchivzhel, conductor
John Wickey, harp
BRITTEN Soirées Musicales
RODRIGO Concierto de Aranjuez
R. STRAUSS Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme Suite
John Wickey began his professional music career as a child with the Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus. At the suggestion of management, he was encouraged to study piano with Albert Fillmore with the goal that he would one day become a conductor of the company.
The idea of conducting was never realized, as John took up the harp after seeing Detroit’s Cass Technical High School Harp & Vocal ensemble perform at a local concert. He became enamored of the harp and after two years of study at Cass Tech, with Patricia Terry-Ross, John was awarded a full tuition Dean’s Scholarship from Boston University to work with Lucile Lawrence, one of the preeminent harp pedagogues of our time and co-author of the Salzedo Method Book.
John Wickey holds a diploma in piano performance from the Detroit Community Music School, a Bachelors in Harp Performance from Boston University and a Masters from the University of Michigan where he studied with Lynne Aspnes.
John currently serves as Principal Harpist with the Greenville Symphony and is on faculty at Converse College and Anderson University. He performs regularly throughout the southeast region, most recently with Pan Harmonia, a series centered in Asheville, NC.
