The Organic Growers School is looking for dedicated individuals interested in serving on our Board of Directors! We are currently seeking socially conscious, diverse, impact-driven individuals to join our Volunteer Board of Directors.
The board of directors plays a critical role in the Organic Growers School. Members of the board are involved in program and policy oversight, financial management, strategic direction, and fundraising.
OGS is looking for energetic, passionate people to:
Build community networks
Act as change catalysts in the community
Serve as ambassadors for organic growing & OGS

The Justus Family has been growing delicious NC Apples in Hendersonville for more than Four Generations, our Fifth generation is now an active part of Justus Orchard as well. At our NC Apple Orchard, you will find U Pick or We Pick Apples, Blackberries, and Pumpkins Whether you choose to U Pick or We Pick, you can sample, mix and match to make sure go home with your favorite apples for eating or cooking. Review the apple varieties we grow and sell and their usual ripening times here.
We invite you to experience picking your own NC Apples, enjoy a day in the beautiful Western North Carolina Mountains, there is something for everyone and all ages. Tour the orchard picking apples, stop by the pond to see our ducks, visit the farm animals, let the kids take a ride on the Cow Train through the orchard, visit Apple House for pre-picked Apples, Honey, Jams, Jellies and Preserves and other homemade goodies. Visit the Bakery which offers our famous homemade Fried Apple Pies, Apple Cider Donuts, Apple Cider, Cider Slushies, Caramels, Apple Bread and more! You can also find fresh Mountain Cabbage, Sweet Potatoes and other local fall vegetables.
We look forward to having you visit one of the oldest U Pick or We Pick Apple Orchards in Western NC. We guarantee fresh apples, delicious baked good, beautiful views and wonderful hospitality!

Sky Top Orchard has been a family-owned & operated farm since 1967 when father and son duo Everette and David Butler planted the first trees on Mt. McAlpine, in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. For almost 60 years, Apple Dave and his wife Lindsey grew Sky Top from a small roadside tent into what it is today.
Built with love, sweat, and a lot of hard work, Sky Top has grown to include our hayride and bee train, the apple cannon, and of course, our famous apple cider doughnuts. But throughout the years, one thing stays the same: tradition. At Sky Top, we believe family and creating long-lasting memories is the most important part. We look forward to being a place for you to bring your families for years to come.

Verner Center for Early Learning is a nonprofit agency providing high quality, affordable early care and education to children birth to five years of age throughout Buncombe County. The mission of Verner Center is to foster holistic learning environments where young children and families thrive. The organization embraces a philosophy that includes excellence in early childhood practices, diversity among children and families, and partnerships and collaboration with families and communities. This philosophy is demonstrated through provision of high quality education, family services, health and nutrition services, and professional development for teachers.
We are currently looking for compassionate volunteers to support our experiential garden.
Volunteer Opportunity Includes:
- Pulling weeds
- Cleaning out garden beds
- Prepping new garden beds
- Building small projects
- Mowing
- Weed eating
- Laying mulch
- Watering
Volunteer Requirements:
- Respond to the shift
- Comfortable working in various weather conditions
- Comfortable bending, stooping, twisting
- Ability to stand for 1-2 hours at a time

In this workshop, Kelly Hollinger of Soul and Soil Project will demonstrate some methods of tasks and tools for preparing your winter garden. She will explore easy soil building, winter cover crops, bed building, and maintenance preparation to help your spring grow to get off to a great start! She will review goal setting to best prepare for winter growing, seasonal extensional gardening, and basic tool care. Come get your hands dirty sheet mulching and discussing mulching methods for nutrient optimization.
The Journeyperson Program is designed for farmers who have been independently farming for three or more years and are serious about operating farm businesses in the Southern Appalachian region. This program will give you the space and time to work on your business while making connections that deepen your peer-to-peer support.

After a two-year hiatus, we are pleased to announce the upcoming 2022 WNC Gardening Symposium! The Extension Master GardenerSM volunteers of Buncombe, Henderson, Jackson, Madison and Polk counties are excited to bring you an inspiring program! Our WNC Gardening Symposium will be held on October 12, at the beginning of leaf season in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
About the Program
Our program will include the following interesting and delightful speakers:
- Toni Gattoni, our keynote speaker, an adaptive gardening expert, a blogger, and author of The Lifelong Gardener: Garden With Ease and Joy At Any Age. You can follow Toni on Facebook and Instagram. Visit https://tonigattone.com for inspiration, tools and resources for the resilient gardener. Her talks will be You Can Garden for Life and Create a Fire-Smart Landscape;
- Preston Montague is an artist, educator, and landscape designer who developed a passion for the natural world while growing up in the rural foothills of Virginia. He will be talking about landscape design. Preston has generously donated a beautifully framed and autographed botanical print that will be raffled off at the symposium;
- Brenda Rosbrook and Kay Campbell, The Shady Ladies of Raymond’s Garden Center, will present transitioning from Fall into Winter/Holiday container gardening by changing out different decorative items. Ideas include using obelisks, trellises, pumpkins and holiday themed items; and,
- Sue Goetz, designer, speaker, author and owner of The Creative Gardener, is based in Tacoma, Washington. Sue is a certified professional horticulturist, the author of three books, The Herb Lover’s Spa Book, A Taste of Herbs, Complete Container Herb Gardening and an award-winning designer. You can follow Sue on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Visit herbloversgarden.com for recipes and inspiration. Her motto “inspiring gardeners to create” will define her talk on A Taste of Herbs.
Make sure to arrive for the event promptly at 8 a.m. for check-in and continental breakfast. Leave time to shop our vendors’ booths for garden-related products while supplies last! Toni Gattone and Sue Goetz will have books available for sale and signing by the author. The program will begin at 8:45 a.m. and end around 4:15 p.m. Attendance for the full day is valid for 5 hours of continuing education for Extension Master GardenerSM volunteers.
Venue
We are pleased to announce the event will once again be held at Blue Ridge Community College in Flat Rock, just off I-26 exit 53, Upward Road. Signs will be posted to direct you to the Technology Building. The facility offers a roomy conference center with excellent graphic displays and sound system, plus a central area where the vendors will be situated so you can easily see everything they have to offer.
Fees and Registration

The symposium fee includes a continental breakfast, lunch, and afternoon coffee break. As always, there will be wonderful door prizes, great vendors, delicious food, and plenty of free parking. In addition, a beautifully framed and autographed botanical print, donated by Preston Montague will be raffled off.
We will continue to utilize online registration, so you will receive instant confirmation of your reservation. The symposium fee is $60 if you register by midnight on August 31 and $65 after that date. All registrations must be received by September 5, 2022. This event usually sells out before the August 31 early-bird deadline, so please register early. Whether you’ve never picked up a paintbrush or are looking to refresh your watercolor skills, veteran artist and instructor Terrilynn Dubreuil will teach you everything you need to jump into—or jump back into—this relaxing medium!
In this explorative, four-week course, you’ll learn basic watercolor concepts, including paintbrush usage, color theory, color mixing, color application, composition, and other watercolor approaches and techniques. You’ll reference simple photos to practice your new skills and, over time, begin to develop or hone your unique painting style! The class will include informal critiques for greater learning and understanding.
No previous drawing or painting experience necessary!

We will share resources to create or expand your garden program as well as tips and strategies for gardening with young children. We emphasize how to sustain a garden program by involving community partners, such as parents, farmers, college students, and agricultural professionals. Please register in advance for this meeting. Caribbean Herbal Medicine Course with Brandon RuizJoin Brandon Ruiz for a 5-week, 20-hour online course consisting of ten 2-hour classes on Caribbean Herbalism. Participants will cover the basics of plant medicine in the Caribbean as well as tropical ecology, history, recipes, religious healing, and more!
