American Novelist Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938)
Considered by many to be one of the giants of 20th-century American literature, Thomas Wolfe immortalized his childhood home in his epic autobiographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel. Wolfe’s colorful portrayal of his family, his hometown of “Altamont” Asheville, North Carolina, and “Dixieland” the Old Kentucky Home boardinghouse, earned the Victorian period house a place as one of American literature’s most famous landmarks.
House tours are offered daily at half past each hour. Last tour leaves at 4:30 pm.

Learn the history of Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley on this walking tour! Museum staff will lead attendees through historic State Street, Cherry Street and Black Mountain Avenue, relaying the history of several buildings and discussing topics including the building of the Swannanoa Tunnel and the disastrous downtown fire of 1912.
Location: Attendees will meet at the Swannanoa Valley Museum (223 West State Street, Black Mountain, NC 28711)
Timing: Tours take place once a month on Saturdays, beginning at 1:00pm, and last approximately 1.5 hours

- Join us on the Museum’s rooftop Sculpture Terrace featuring panoramic city and mountain views for Gentle Flow Yoga. This 60-minute class is comprised of gentle stretching and strengthening aimed to restore the body and mind, with a special focus on breathing, body awareness, and mindset care.
The one-hour yoga class will be followed by a time to gather and enjoy fresh-brewed coffee and a pastry baked inhouse in our beautiful Perspective Cafe.
All-levels are welcome. Please bring your own mat. Loose-fitting clothing is recommended.
Please Note:
- Yoga on the Rooftop is held outdoors on the Museum’s rooftop Sculpture Terrace. In the event of inclement weather, it will be held inside the Perspective Cafe.
- Space is limited to small groups of up to 10 individuals; social distancing is required.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Alaina has been teaching regular yoga and meditation classes since 2016. She was certified at the 200-hour level at the Asheville Yoga Center and at the 300-level at The Breathing Space in Blacksburg, Virginia. Alaina is passionate about sharing a different approach focused on grounding, breathing, and spinal health. Alaina prioritizes making her classes accessible and friendly to all.
Asheville Outlets will team with Yoga Nut to host a Wellness Expo on Saturday, September 24 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with booth proceeds benefitting Catholic Charities of WNC. Attending organizations include: Yoga Nut, Pathway to Your Health, AmeriHealth Caritas NC, Samantha Nivens Coaching, Asheville Salt Cave, Asheville Kids Yoga & Art, Moving Body Massage, Well Roots Counseling, United Healthcare, Solara Awakening Coaching and Wellness, Alchemy Acupuncture, Beth Ford | Well-Being Strategist, NC Open Gym, One Health Direct Primary Care and Shanti Elixirs, among others.
The complimentary Expo will provide attendees with a wide array of fitness, health and wellness tools including body composition, health and life coaching, yoga sequences, chair massages, educational seminars, mini acupuncture treatments, a biofeedback and essential oil experience, lifestyle counseling and more.
The Western Region Office of Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte in Asheville will be the recipient of the vendor registration fees for the Wellness Expo. The organization serves people in need in the 12 western-most counties of North Carolina, including Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, Yancey, and all counties west to the borders. Join us on at Innisfree Farm at 1485 North Rugby Road for the WNC Family Fall Festival – a benefit for Hands On! Children’s Museum!
CALLING ALL WNC FAMILIES! Join us at the Innisfree Farm on Saturday, September 24, 2022 for the WNC Family Fall Festival- A Hands On! Reunion presented by Turf Mountain Sod. All proceeds from this event benefit Hands On! Children’s Museum, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
LOCATION & PARKING
The WNC Family Fall Festival is located at the Innisfree Farm located at 1485 North Rugby Road. Parking is free and avaliable on the property.
TICKETS
Tickets for this event is $40 per adult, $20 per child, and $75 per adult couple. Tickets include access to all festival activities, ONE (1) BBQ/Hot Dog Dinner, soft drinks, and ONE (1) alocholic beverage for adults 21+. Additional alocholic beverages will be available for purchase. All attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and/or blanket.
ACTIVITIES
Event activites include but are not limited to: Fun Children’s Games, Old-Fashioned Cake Walk, Face Painting, Live DJ, Hay Rides, Pony Rides, 50/50 Cash Raffle, and Fireworks!
50/50 RAFFLE
Adults 18+ are eligible to purchase ticket(s) for the 50/50 raffle. At the conclusion of the WNC Family Fall Festival a drawing will take place to determine the winner of the raffle. The winner will receive 50% of the total raffle ticket sales.
Tickets are $5 each, or FIVE (5) tickets can be purchases for $20. Raffle tickets are available to purchase in-person at Hands On! Children’s Museum Tuesday – Satrurday between 9am and 5pm. The museum is located at 318 North Main Street in Downtown Hendersonville. Tickets will also be available for purchase during the WNC Family Fall Festival.
The drawing will take place at the conclusion of the event, and you do not need to be present to win. The winner of the 50/50 raffle is responsible for their taxes (federal and state). Any fees or other taxes in connection with the 50/50 raffle, are the sole responsibility of the winner. The winner will receive IRS Form W2G, and the amount of the winnings will be reported to the IRS of the winnings. State and Federal Taxes are the sole responsibility of the winner. The ticket purchase price does not qualify as a charitable contribution.

WEATHER: Please note this event is rain or shine. In the evevent of dangerous inclement weather conditons, the event will be cancelled and your ticket purchase will become a tax-deductible donation to the museum.
PETS: For the safety of all event attendees, non-service animals are not allowed on the property. Please do not bring your pet(s) to this event.

Join the Western North Carolina Historical Association (WNCHA) Wednesday, September 28 from 11AM – 12:30PM as we conclude our special Hikes With a Historian: Cemeteries tours at the Christmount Christian Assembly in Black Mountain.
Renowned architect and builder, Rafael Guastavino and his wife, Francesca, retired to Black Mountain after he completed working on the Biltmore House in Asheville at the end of the 19th century. The couple built their own rambling estate on the grounds of what is now Christmount Christian Assembly. On this tour, WNCHA Executive Director Anne Chesky Smith will guide participants on an approximately 1.5 mile walk through ruins of the Guastavinos’ estate, including the foundations of the house, wine cellar, brick kiln, and small graveyard. The first mile of the walk is on relatively open, even ground; the last half mile is an optional moderate hike on a trail through woods to a small graveyard. Chesky Smith will share stories of the Guastavinos’ life in Black Mountain; of Rafael Guastavino’s career – including his work on Asheville’s St. Lawrence Basilica, Boston’s Public Library, and the numerous other locations across the nation and the world where his tile vaulting work can be found; and of the people laid to rest on the Guastavino property.

Hike Length: approximately 1.5 miles (easy to moderate difficulty)
What to Bring: Water (1+ liter), snacks, comfortable and sturdy shoes, weather appropriate clothing, any needed medications.
Rain Date: In the event of inclement weather, participants will be notified in advance, no later than 8PM the evening prior if the event is to be rescheduled. The alternate rain date will be rescheduled promptly.
Tickets: $10 for WNCHA members/$20 non-members. We also have two no-cost, community-funded tickets available. We want our events to be accessible to as many people as possible. If you are able please consider making a donation along with your ticket purchase. These donations are placed in our Community Fund, which allows us to offer tickets at no cost to those who would not be able to attend otherwise.
Hike Leader: Anne Chesky Smith holds MA degrees in Appalachian studies and cultural anthropology. She serves as the executive director of the Western North Carolina Historical Association and lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with her family.
