Matt Walsh and the Movers Live at Triskelion
Jul 20 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Triskelion Brewing Company

Matt Walsh is a vocalist, guitarist and prolific songwriter from Statesville NC who performs 200 plus shows a year either solo or with his rhythm section, ‘The Movers’. His latest album ‘Life After Rock N Roll’ (2017) has been hailed by music publications and played on radio stations in the US, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Australia. Matt’s sound is a clever blend of numerous styles of the music that have influenced him since his youth – early electric and country Blues, Rock N Roll, Rockabilly, Soul, R&B, Country, Bluegrass, Jazz and Psychedelia. His focus on making all original music by combining the influences that inspired him, along with his own ideas, have produced an exciting blend of many genres without rules or limitations.

His exposure to music came first came from his mother through her love of Motown. When Matt was 9 years old, she took him to a Prince concert and afterwards, he knew he wanted to be a musician. His musical education began with his late uncle who turned him onto a record collection that included early 1950’s electric Blues and 1960’s Rock which inspired Matt to play guitar. When he was 13, Matt got a knock off electric guitar for $25 at a flea market and set out to learn the instrument. He furthered his musical education when he began absorbing the music on old record labels, notably Chess, Sun and Stax.

Less than a decade later, he began performing in clubs and in the years to follow, he established himself as a highly regarded musician in the Blues world with his first release, ‘Hard Luck’ (2007), as one of the few artists in the genre capable of writing relevant original material without relying on any cover songs from the past. The album got rave reviews in multiple music publications, radio play on stations around the world and a featured spot on XM 74 Sirius Satellite Radio as a ‘Pick to Click’. Around this time Matt joined Bob Margolin (guitarist for Muddy Waters 1973-1980) and performed with some of his heroes, legendary artists like Howlin’ Wolf’s guitarist Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith.

While he was looking for a new direction to expand his music, Matt started working with drummer Austin Hicks after they met on Craigslist in 2013. They formed the drum-guitar duo, the Low Counts and branded themselves as, “Blue Collar Rock-N-Roll”. They turned heads, made dedicated fans and blew audiences away with their no frills, high energy stage show. Their ride was cut short on March 8th 2017 when Austin passed away unexpectedly. Matt wrote 27 songs that the duo released over three albums in the four short years they were together (The Low Counts 2014, Unsettled Days 2015, Years Pass BY 2015)

Matt is currently finishing up his next solo album.

Movie screens will be situated on both the WPA main stage as well as the WPA lawn for this BMC concert. Popcorn, beverages, and casual concessions fare will also be available, plus there will be an appearance by Indiana Jones at the BMC photo booth that evening! Aside from clubs and venues nationwide, Robby has done stand-up on Conan (TV!) and numerous festivals such as The Great American Comedy Festival and Laughing Skull.

He has also written for TV including working with Jon Stewart on his HBO project, as well as shows for IFC, MTV, and Comedy Central.

Summer Exhibitions at Momentum Gallery
Jul 21 all-day
Momentum Gallery

Momentum Gallery in downtown Asheville hosts new summer exhibitions – Mariella Bisson, Setting Shapes; Oil paintings by two new painters: Samantha Keely Smith and Paul Sattler; and a group invitational called Give Me Wood. These exhibitions continue at 24 N Lexington Avenue through the end of August.

Mariella Bisson deftly delineates the sculptural planes of regional waterfalls and sylvan scenes creating refreshingly contemporary landscape paintings. Her oil-over-collage paintings feature built-up texture, suggesting the complex surface of stone and tree bark, lichen, and moss. Bisson’s paintings demonstrate a strong understanding of formal composition and reflect a sensibility honed from time she’s spent immersed in the outdoors. Of note, Bisson is a two-time recipient of the Pollock-Krasner grant and was awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in painting.

Samantha Keely Smith creates inspired and stirring abstract paintings in oil. The Brooklyn-based artist sees her paintings “as an expression of our internal turbulence. They reflect the overwhelming reality of being constantly aware of what is happening in the wider world – Change is the only constant.” Smith’s nebulous compositions are evocative of luminous cloudscapes and primordial oceans. Brilliant areas of stained pigment collide with waves of painterly brush strokes ultimately conjuring imagined environments with a timeless quality. “These paintings are about the essence of who we all are, as human beings… We all want love and connection.” Smith’s works give form to fluctuations between turbulence and calm present in everything from our emotions to the temporal world. Overall, Smith’s focus is on the underlying psychological impact of the dawning awareness of our shifting reality.

An accomplished oil painter, Paul Sattler was the recipient of the John R. Solomon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. In 2004, he was selected to exhibit at the 179th Annual Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary Art at the National Academy of Design in New York, where he received the Wallace Truman Prize. Dramatic narratives unfold in his charged and enigmatic oil paintings which reference historic and literary sources. Sattler comments, “A diverse population of animals are enmeshed in my works’ human-inhabited environments, theatrical locales, and domestic dramas.”

Give Me Wood is an imaginative and evocative collection of contemporary painting and wood sculpture. Central to the identity and creation of all the extraordinary two- and three-dimensional works in the exhibition is the common material of wood. The participating artists defy logic, explore space (both real and imagined), carve, bend, turn, and otherwise construct some truly amazing and innovative work! Featuring Michael Alm, Garry Knox Bennett, Gil Bruvel, Christian Burchard, Tom Eckert, David Ellsworth, Ron Layport, Wendy Maruyama, and Sylvie Rosenthal.

Abbey Road LIVE! Beatles tribute – Sat July 20 at Orange Peel
Jul 21 @ 12:00 am – 3:30 am
The Orange Peel

Abbey Road LIVE! Beatles Tribute
Sat July 20 at The Orange Peel, Asheville NC
———————————-

“one of the world’s premier Beatles cover bands”
-US News and World Report

“unquestionably expert at what they do”
-Indyweek

Since 2002, Abbey Road LIVE! has been rocking the music of The Beatles. Initially a tribute to the monumental “Abbey Road” album, the band has expanded its repertoire to include more than 150 Beatles tunes, from all eras of the Fab Four’s career.

Abbey Road LIVE! is not your typical Beatle look-alike tribute act; don’t expect mop-top haircuts and fake British accents. Rather, an Abbey Road LIVE! show is about bringing to life some of the more mature and complex Beatles material in a raw & spirited fashion, while remaining true to the original recordings. Combining attention to detail with a creative exuberance, the band always delights its audiences with its diverse repertoire of hits and more obscure favorites.

A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

Jeff Michels and Folkadelic Jam Live at Triskelion
Jul 21 @ 12:00 am – 2:00 am
Triskelion Brewing Company

A bit about the band from Jeff Michels:

” I started writing as soon as I strummed my first guitar at 16, and haven’t stopped… Many years of singing out in upstate New York, Maryland, Sacramento, Atlanta, Virginia, Seattle, and now, western North Carolina. I was born and raised in the apple country of New York state–not too far from Woodstock With acoustic guitar and a strong voice I lean towards rock and folk — “Folkadelic” one might say… Jim Robertson picked up his folk-congas not so long ago, and we’ve been making rhythm and harmonies since and adds synergy to my music. He hasn’t cut his pony tail either. Tyler Matthews can pound soft and hard and keeps me in time. Steve Kirkland joins us, playing lead and adding another dimension to “Folkadelic Jam” Together we will make you smile and tap your feet. Listen to the Music!”

Charlie Hunter and Lucy Woodward

Charlie Hunter and Lucy Woodward are known for excelling in different genres, yet the two veteran musicians have been running in similar circles before pairing up for touring in 2018.

With a career spanning 26 years and almost 20 albums, virtuoso guitarist Charlie Hunter has worked with the likes of Norah Jones, Mos Def, John Mayer, and D’Angelo. He is widely considered the authority on the seven and eight – string guitar, and continues to stun audiences with his ability to simultaneously bust out tasty bass parts, melodic leads and swinging rhythms.

Lucy Woodward made her major label debut in 2003. She has since recorded/toured with Rod Stewart, Snarky Puppy, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Pink Martini, Chaka Khan and Carole King releasing 3 more albums along the way. Her latest studio effort was 2016’s “Til They Bang On The Door” released on the Snarky Puppy-owned GroundUP Music.

As for what to expect live from Hunter and Woodward, the two — as rounded out by a drummer — will be performing pocket-heavy renditions of vintage blues and classic vintage pop, covers of Nina Simone, The Animals, Bessie Smith and Terence Trent D’Arby included.

Spectacle

BIOGRAPHY
In the winter of 2015, a striking new voice formed in the heart of Denver’s electronic music scene. Spectacle’s orchestral instrumentation (violin, synth, guitar) quickly made the duo stand out amongst the crowd; each performance being an experience that is refreshingly original. Hard hitting drops, alongside an afro-cuban feel make for an irresistible groove and a heady tropical soundscape. Beautiful soaring violin melodies, and deep rhythmic bass synth lines drive each musical passage through every member of the audience. Band members Michael Mahan and Jessica Borth work in unity gripping the crowd for a show that is both mesmerizing and captivating from start to finish. Spectacle brings their audience through an innovative and dynamic journey show after show after show..

BRAND ABSTRACT
The Spectacle Duo’s unique instrumentation brings a multi-dimensional sound not typically heard in the electronic music scene. Spectacle breaks the mold of traditional EDM by incorporating Jazz, Funk, Classical, Afro-Cuban beats, and live instrumentation performance into an intricate masterpiece of harmonic styles and landscapes. The Trio, most commonly described as refreshing and exciting, offers its audience a new hybrid of genres that span all ages.

Vance Elementary School and Ben & Jerry’s Art Showcase
Jul 21 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Ben & Jerry' s Scoop Shop

There’s more than Chunky Monkey and New York Super Fudge Chunk in downtown Asheville’s Ben & Jerry’s this summer.

Art created by Vance Elementary School fifth grade students of art educator Robbie Lipe is now on display on the brick walls opposite the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The exhibit depicts the students’ interpretation of the artist Kehinde Wiley and the contemporary portraits he creates inspired by traditional Baroque paintings. It will be featured through the end of the summer.

“Ben & Jerry’s is excited about showcasing art from the community inside our scoop shop,” said general manager Chris Carter. “Making use of our walls to show what local artists are creating complements our social mission — to be actively involved in the places we live and do business. I hope this is the first of many art exhibits on our walls.”

Carter gave all the credit for the exhibit to Ms. Lipe, who teaches kindergarten through 5th-grade students at Vance Elementary. She was named the North Carolina Arts Educators Association “Art Educator of the Year” in 2017-2018.

Ben & Jerry’s is located at 19 Haywood Street. Current hours are Monday-Thursday 12 pm to 10 pm; Friday 12 pm – 11 pm; Saturday 11:30 am – 11 pm; Sunday 11:30 am – 10 pm.

For more information, call Carter at 310-601-6247.
