You can’t beat a walk with a friend over good conversation. So, why not take a walk with lots of friends and a history expert to boot? Buncombe County Libraries is excited to announce its Strolling Through History program focused on getting you moving while taking in some experiential history. “Each one of the strolls is a little different. We’ll talk about the evolution of the architecture, famous (or not quite so famous) residents, important events, and more,” explains Pack Memorial Librarian Katherine Calhoun Cutshall. “On our Haywood Street stroll, we talked about how the street has seen two major rebirths and discussed the careers of two WWI nurses who grew up on the street while it was mostly residential.”

Pack Librarians are always looking for innovative ways to showcase the library’s portfolio of initiatives and resources. “The North Carolina Room is a hidden gem in our library system, so programs like Strolling Through History bring the collection to the streets of downtown while showing off resources and programs in a fun new way,” notes Katherine. And of course, exercising your muscles and social skills are important at any age

So, how can you get involved with the monthly Strolling Through History? There are two versions: one for elder adults and one for babies and their caregivers. If you’re interested in participating, the elder adults strolls are the third Friday of every month, and the babies and caretakers strolls are the third Wednesday of every month (except July). All strolls will meet at Pack Memorial Library at 10:30 a.m., and participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring water to stay hydrated. Registration is required. 

You adult child won’t speak to you? Find support through our weekly meetings, every Saturday, Sept. 7 – Nov. 9, 2019, 8:30 am to 9:45 am, at First Congregational Church Library, 1735 Fifth Avenue West.  It’s not about who’s right or wrong.  It’s about getting on with life.

Caldwell Arts Council announces the 34th annual Sculpture Celebration in Lenoir, NC on Saturday September 7, 2019 at the T.H. Broyhill Walking Park in Lenoir, North Carolina.

Sculptors are invited to bring up to 3 sculptures for this one-day competition for $11,000 in cash awards, along with potential sales and commissions.

This annual event attracts sculptors and buyers from the eastern United States to Lenoir, North Carolina. Last year, over 4,000 people attended the family-friendly celebration.

Attention all knights, pages, jesters, jousters, kings, queens, princesses and princes! Get your costumes ready, and come out and have some fun on September 7th! Boys, girls, moms, dads, come one, come all to the First Annual Renaissance Fair at the Farm. We have all sorts of fun demonstrations planned, such as fencing, sword fighting, and juggling. Other activities to be announced, including a costume contest!

Throughout their career, one that encompasses four highly acclaimed albums and any number of awards and accolades- the band has demonstrated the ability to adapt to change with unwavering persistence. It’s one in which they’ve never stopped looking forward, successfully marshalling their resources for wherever that trajectory takes them. Ultimately, it’s all about the music. “Our dedication and determination remain intact,” says singer, songwriter and fiddler Tammy Rogers. “We honor our older music by always putting our focus on the songs. Some people describe our music as being bluegrass based, but the fact is, we’re not bound to any one regimen. I liken us to what the Rolling Stones would sound like if they played banjos, fiddles and mandolins ” it’s that rock-n-roll edge played on traditional instruments. I don’t know if that’s true, but we are primarily a band that’s centered around songwriting and also just happens to have a bluegrass background.” That persistent push could be called the key to SteelDrivers’ success. Each step in their journey has created a new chapter, one that finds them building on the past but consolidating their strengths as they build for the future.

Join us this Saturday, September 7th, for Penny & Sparrow. The acoustic duo, which consists of Kyle Jahnke and Andy Baxter, will play a seated show which will highlight their haunting harmonies, storytelling song-writing style, and a “Simon & Garfunkel-meets-Bon Iver musical vibe,” according to NPR Music.  

“Almost everything changed for us in these last two years,” says Andy Baxter, one half of the acclaimed duo Penny & Sparrow. “It was a painful experience in a lot of ways, but it was also a joyful one.”

Joy and pain walk hand in hand on ‘Finch,’ Penny & Sparrow’s magnificent sixth album. Written during their first major break from the road in years, the record finds the band reckoning with a prolonged period of intense personal transformation, a profound awakening that altered their perceptions of masculinity, sex, religion, divorce, friendship, vanity, purpose, and, perhaps most importantly, self. Deeply vulnerable and boldly cinematic, the resulting songs blur the lines between indie-folk and alt-pop, with dense string arrangements and atmospheric production underpinning soaring melodies and airtight harmonies from Baxter and his longtime musical partner, Kyle Jahnke.

Asheville City Market is a vibrant seasonal farmers market located in the heart of downtown Asheville on N. Market Street. With thousands of shoppers and dozens of farms and small businesses, it is a valued community hub and public space. A multistory hotel proposed for N. Market St. now poses a threat to Asheville City Market and may force it to close. Create 72 Broadway, as approved by the Asheville Planning & Zoning Commission in early August, includes parking accessed solely from N. Market St., which would impede the market’s ability to operate.

Asheville City Market opened on N. Market St. in 2017 after years of searching for a downtown location that met critical requirements, including 60 vendor spaces with adjacent parking, convenient free parking for customers, access to public restrooms, and unrestricted access from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. 38 Saturdays a year. The market welcomes 1500 residents and visitors each week and is instrumental in providing access to local food, including for SNAP recipients whose benefit dollars are doubled. Asheville City Market is critical to the sustainability of dozens of local farms and small businesses. As the only farmers market operating in downtown Asheville, it embodies authenticity and connection to place, and is a public space worth protecting.

The issue is expected to be on the agenda for the Sept. 10 City Council meeting (5 p.m. in the Council Chamber, City Hall, 70 Court Plaza). We encourage market customers, vendors, and community members to attend or reach out to City Council members at AshevilleNCCouncil@ashevillenc.gov. Why we remember

On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

The twin towers of New York City’s World Trade Center collapsed in the aftermath of the airplane attacks.

Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Another 6,000 others were injured. Additional people died of 9/11-related cancer and respiratory diseases in the months and years following the attacks.
