WCCA’s new Bargain Hunt Thrift Store
Dec 8 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Bargain Hunt Thrift Store

When WCCA’s Bargain Hunt Thrift Shop opens for business on Tuesday,
December 1st, it will also mark the start of a new holiday tradition – Countdown to Christmas. In
addition to providing a source for inexpensive clothing and household goods, Bargain Hunt will
help fund WCCA’s programs including: Children’s Services, Housing, Transportation, and Older
Adult Services throughout four Western NC Counties.
Standing out in Hendersonville’s active resale marketplace requires thinking outside the box. Or,
in this case, thinking outside 24 boxes. Store manager Belinda Sawyer exclaimed, “That little
surprise each morning just adds to the fun and anticipation of the holidays. So the new tradition
at Bargain Hunt is to celebrate the season with a Countdown Calendar of Discounts.” Each day
in December, Bargain Hunt will reveal a new discount for customers to enjoy.

Clara and Mr. Tiffany: A Novel by Susan Vreeland
Dec 8 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Online

Against the unforgettable backdrop of New York near the turn of the 20th century, from the Gilded Age world of formal balls and opera to the immigrant poverty of the Lower East Side, best-selling author Susan Vreeland again breathes life into a work of art in this extraordinary novel, which brings a woman once lost in the shadows into vivid color. It’s 1893, and at the Chicago World’s Fair, Louis Comfort Tiffany makes his debut with a luminous exhibition of innovative stained-glass windows, which he hopes will honor his family business and earn him a place on the international artistic stage. But behind the scenes in his New York studio is the freethinking Clara Driscoll, head of his women’s division. Publicly unrecognized by Tiffany, Clara conceives of and designs nearly all of the iconic leaded-glass lamps for which he is long remembered. Clara struggles with her desire for artistic recognition and the seemingly insurmountable challenges that she faces as a professional woman, which ultimately force her to protest against the company she has worked so hard to cultivate. She also yearns for love and companionship, and is devoted in different ways to five men, including Tiffany, who enforces to a strict policy: he does not hire married women, and any who do marry while under his employ must resign immediately. Eventually, like many women, Clara must decide what makes her happiest—the professional world of her hands or the personal world of her heart.

Moderated by Barbara Pressman, touring docent; presented in conjunction with Intersections in American Art.

Asheville Angel Tree
Dec 8 @ 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Archetype Brewing - West Asheville

In an effort to meet an increased need due to COVID-19, Archetype will be a prime location for Angel Tree adoptions and Angel Tree gift deliveries.  The proximity of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs and Archetype brewing, both nestled on Haywood Road in the heart of West Asheville, creates ease for locals wanting to pour into their communities this holiday season.

This year, in light of the challenges posed by COVID-19, quarantine, and social-distance measures, the needs are greater than ever, and we can only meet this challenge with support from our community.

Our goal is to meet essential needs for our families that do not have the means to provide for themselves or for their children.

In order to #RescueChristmas we must stand in the gap of need and create resources for these children so they do not go cold, hungry, or without hope.

Free flu shots for the uninsured during National Influenza Vaccination Week
Dec 8 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm
The Free Clinics (TFC)

he Free Clinics (TFC) will be offering free flu shots to community members who do not have health insurance on Tuesday, December 8 from 4:00-7:00 pm at their offices at 841 Case Street in Hendersonville. The walk-in clinic is scheduled to take place during National Influenza Vaccination Week (December 6-12), an awareness week sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to highlight the importance of yearly flu vaccination.

RN Jennifer Tarleton, TFC Clinical Services Director says, “As we head into the upcoming months facing the rising cases of COVID, we are still months away from a vaccine for COVID being widely available. Developing both COVID and flu could be an even deadlier risk for many people. The nursing staff is urging the community to protect themselves and get their flu shots.”

The CDC says that it is more important than ever this year that individuals get vaccinated for flu, especially those with certain chronic conditions like asthma, heart disease, and diabetes. Getting vaccinated for flu can also reduce the burden of flu illnesses on hospitals so they can focus on patients with COVID-19.  While flu shots have been encouraged nationwide since early fall, it is not too late to get a shot that will be effective for this flu season.

The Free Clinics is changing lives together, with hope and health. Established in 2001, TFC partners with over 220 volunteers and 181 community health care providers to ensure quality, accessible care for more than 2,000 of our uninsured, low-income neighbors in Henderson and Polk Counties. TFC programming employs a person-centered model to address acute and chronic conditions, mental and behavioral health, medication access, and other barriers to health for the most vulnerable among us.

Full game to be streamed on ESPN+.

Asheville, NC – The Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville is proud to announce a college men’s basketball regular season game between the University of North Carolina Asheville Bulldogs (0-2, Big South Conference) and the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers (1-2, Southern Conference) on Tuesday, December 8 at 7:02pm at the ExploreAsheville.com Arena. Due to current county and state COVID-19 regulations, fans will not be allowed to attend the event. The game will be the first sporting event to be held at the venue following the 2020 Camping World Maui Invitational on November 30 – December 2. For more information, please visit here.

Tipoff time is at 7:02pm ET and will be available to stream via the ESPN+ app or online at https://plus.espn.com/ for subscribers.

“Over the past year, our venue has been able to serve the community through temporary housing solutions in partnership with Homeward Bound WNC, food drives to feed local musicians in conjunction with Asheville Music Professionals, direct staffing COVID-19 support to Buncombe County DHHS and served as an official Buncombe County early voting location. We are always happy to serve our city, but we are also very excited to host sporting events again in our arena,” said Chris Corl, general manager of the Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville. “In anticipation of high-impact, no fan sporting events, our staff has worked tirelessly to completely transform our venue into a safe and secure venue for the participating teams, coaches, and staff. And we hope to include music lovers and fans into that crowd in the near future.”

UNC Asheville enters the 2020-21 campaign after improving their win total by 11 games last season, posting a record of 15-16 overall, winning eight conference games and advancing to the Big South Quarterfinals. The 11-win improvement, which was third in all of NCAA Division I, did not go unnoticed, as the Bulldogs were selected to finish second behind Winthrop in the Big South Preseason Poll. Learn more at UNCAbulldogs.com/sports/mens-basketball.

Last season, the Bucs went 30-4 overall (16-2 in conference play) en route to sweeping both the regular season and tournament championships. The 30 wins set a program record, while ETSU became just the fourth team in the 100-year history of the SoCon to reach the 30-win mark. The Bucs finished the season ranked No. 26 in the Coaches Poll and No. 27 in the AP Poll, while being just one of four programs to register 30 wins last year – joining No. 2 Gonzaga (31), No. 6 San Diego State (30) and Liberty.
