START YOUR NEW YEAR WITH MOMENTUM: WHAT WILL YOUR STORY BE FOR 2019?
Jan 1 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Momentum on Broadway

Momentum on Broadway, downtown Asheville’s newest contemporary art gallery, located at 52 Broadway Street, hosts a storytelling event with local printmaker and raconteur Andy Farkas, New Year’s Day – Tuesday January 1, 2019 – from 2-4pm. This all ages story telling event, “What Will Your Story be for 2019?” will be in conjunction with a special presentation of his original prints and watercolors.

Andy depicts times of triumph, bewilderment, and excitement through his beautifully written vignettes inscribed within his whimsical imagery. Inspired by Andy’s daughters and his own life events, these original vignettes call upon our emotions to do the thinking and our own life stories to give the phrases added depth and significance. Along with sharing his charming and insightful stories, Andy will discuss his creative process of printmaking in the Japanese style of Moku Hanga, an ancient Japanese printmaking technique using woodcut engravings and water-based pigments.

“Stories build bridges between the seen and unseen world — breathing life into a way of being, understanding, and feeling that, at its most profound, illumines a path toward enlightenment.” – Andy Farkas

This event will take place at Momentum’s Broadway location, 52 Broadway street in downtown Asheville from 2-4pm. Light refreshments will be served. All ages are welcome, and this event is free and open to the public.

Letters to Abigail LIVE at Sanctuary Brewing Company
Jan 5 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Sanctuary Brewing Company

Letters to Abigail IS AN APPALACHIAN/AMERICANA BAND BASED IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. SOME FOLKS DESCRIBE THEIR MUSIC AS A SIMPLE SOUTHERN PLEASURE. DIGGING DOWN INTO THE ROOTS OF THE REGION, THEY BLEND A CLASSIC APPROACH TO A NEW ORIGINAL SOUND, DRENCHED IN POWERFUL LYRICS, ACOUSTIC MELODIES AND SOULFUL HARMONIES.

THE STORY STARTS OUT LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN NEW YORK TWO GENERATIONS AGO OR PERHAPS ON A MOVIE SET IN HOLLYWOOD TODAY: THE GIRL WAS WORKING IN A WINDOWLESS BAR HIDDEN AWAY IN THE BACK OF ANOTHER BUSINESS WHEN THE STRANGER WALKED IN WITH A GUITAR, BEGAN PLAYING AND SINGING, AND SUDDENLY SHE WAS AWARE OF NOTHING BUT HIS VOICE. CAPTIVATED, SHE INTRODUCED HERSELF AND THE TWO SOON VENTURED OUT INTO THE WORLD TO MAKE MUSICAL HISTORY.

CHANGE A FEW DETAILS AND THE REALITY OF LETTERS TO ABIGAIL IS NOT FAR REMOVED FROM THIS TALE.

SEVEN YEARS AGO, KELLI REDMOND WAS WORKING AT THE BACK ROOM, A SMALL MUSIC VENUE TUCKED AWAY IN THE BACK OF THE FLAT ROCK WINE SHOPPE. IT WAS OPEN MIC NIGHT AND JAMES HARRELL WAS THERE TO PARTAKE IN THE EVENING’S FESTIVITIES, UNBEKNOWNST TO THE FACT THAT THIS EVENING WAS ABOUT TO CHANGE EVERYTHING ABOUT HIS MUSICAL PATH. “I THOUGHT HE SOUNDED FANTASTIC” REDMOND SAYS, RECALLING HER FIRST IMPRESSION OF HARRELL. “I WAS ALREADY DOING THIS MUSIC THING IN MY LIVING ROOM WHERE A BUNCH OF US WOULD PLAY TOGETHER SO I INVITED HIM TO JOIN US.”

THE REST, AS THE CLICHÉ GOES, IS HISTORY. AS SOON AS THEY FIRST PLAYED TOGETHER THEY NOTICED HOW WELL THEIR VOICES COMPLEMENTED EACH OTHER “LIKE IT WAS MEANT TO BE” SHE SAYS WITH A TONE THAT STILL SOUNDS AS EXCITED AS SHE MUST HAVE BEEN WHEN THIS ALL FIRST HAPPENED.

FROM THIS CHANCE ENCOUNTER LETTERS TO ABIGAIL WAS BORN. THE DUO IS A MODERN DAY STRING BAND WITH A DISTINCTLY OLD TIME FEEL AND IT IS EASY TO SEE WHAT DREW THE TWO MUSICIANS TOGETHER. WHEN REDMOND AND HARRELL SING TOGETHER IN HARMONY IT REALLY DOES FEEL LIKE THE TWO WERE DESIGNED WITH THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF BEING BAND MATES. WHETHER IT IS A HEARTFELT LOVE SONG LIKE “ANGEL IN ORDINARY SHOES” OR AN UPBEAT AND CATCHY BREAK-UP SONG LIKE “LEAVE THE LEAVIN’” THE DUO SOUNDS LIKE MASTERS OF THEIR GENRE, BOTH MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY.

IN REALITY, LETTERS TO ABIGAIL IS STILL IN THE EARLY STAGES OF WHAT PROMISES TO BE A LONG AND SUCCESSFUL MUSICAL JOURNEY. THEY RECORDED THEIR FIRST ALBUM “SAY ANYTHING” IN 2013 WHICH MADE WNCW’S LIST OF TOP 100 RELEASES OF THE YEAR. REDMOND ADMITS, THOUGH, THAT THE ALBUM WAS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY WHAT EACH OF THEM HAD BEEN DOING BEFORE THEY TEAMED UP. IT WAS A COMING TOGETHER OF “WHAT HE WROTE AND WHAT I WROTE” THAT THEY HAD POLISHED AND PRESENTED AS A DUO, AS OPPOSED TO A COMPLETELY JOINT EFFORT BY THE BAND.

ALL OF THAT CHANGED WHEN THEY RECORDED THEIR SOON-TO-BE RELEASED SELF-TITLED FOLLOW UP ALBUM. REDMOND PROMISES A MORE ECLECTIC ALBUM THAT REPRESENTS THE DUO’S WORK WRITING THEIR MUSIC AS A TEAM. “IT’S A LITTLE BIT OF A MOSH PIT” IN TERMS OF STYLE SHE PROMISES WITH A LAUGH. AS AN EXAMPLE SHE SPECIFICALLY MENTIONS THE INCLUSION OF A MURDER BALLAD, A BLUES TUNE, HEARTFELT LOVE SONGS, UPLIFTING TRACKS, AND EVEN A “SLOW, RAINY DAY KIND OF TUNE” COMING IN THE FORM OF “TAKE ME AWAY,” ORIGINALLY MADE POPULAR BY HAYES CARLL. THE RESULT IS AN ALBUM TRULY REPRESENTATIVE OF LETTERS TO ABIGAIL’S TALENT AND, SPECIFICALLY, THEIR LIVE PERFORMANCES, OF WHICH THEY PERFORM WELL OVER 100 TIMES A YEAR.

Join us for our first “Oyster’s On The Half Shell (And Champagne!)” event this Thursday, 1/10. Free to attend, Oysters available by the half dozen on the half shell at market price. Shucked right on the spot.

Wear your favorite jeans and winter sweater to enjoy oysters by the outdoor heaters, then come in to warm up with live music from Drayton’s Duo.

Ben Phan LIVE at Sanctuary Brewing Company
Jan 10 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Sanctuary Brewing Company

Join Sanctuary Brewing Company and Ben Phan, Guitarist and Songwriter on Thursday January 10th, 2019 for an evening of incredible music by an even more incredible person!

A year of jazz conservatory at Virginia Commonwealth University left Ben Phan rebellious: uninspired by the environment and fed-up with the structure, he knew he didn’t want to be an academic musician.

So Phan began his professional career as a founding member of the Richmond Afrobeat Movement, a blend of jazz, funk and African dance music which earned significant attention in the South, including a TV appearance and other media features.

A stint as Musical Director for Free Run Wine Merchants gave Phan a chance to develop his professional skills, setting up musical events for the company, which included solo jazz gigs as well as band arrangements.

Phan then joined a bluegrass and folk band, the Rusty Strings, and discovered the joy in sitting on a porch and singing together with others, simply for the love of music.

In 2014, Phan decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail and his life changed forever. Along with everything else he needed, he carried a mini-guitar on his back and became known by the name “Shredder” because of how he “shredded the guitar” when he played. Five months of travel on foot, 2,668 miles from the Mexican border all the way into Canada, playing for himself and the people he met, transformed his relationship with music. He began writing songs, drawn from his experiences on the trail as well as his past struggles with depression, addiction, loss and love. The music offered hope and solace, to him and to his audiences.

The time on the Pacific Crest Trail renewed Phan’s passion for music. With a prolific body of original work, he returned to Asheville to record his first solo EP, “Hold On, Let Go.” He assembled a band, made up of some of the best musicians in Asheville: besides liking his music, they appreciate the dedication and professionalism Phan brings to his work. The band released it’s debut album, “Dreams in Modern Folk”, to a sold out crowd at the Altamont Theatre, one of Asheville’s finest listening rooms. The band continued to perform successful shows over the following year, refining their high energy sound which combines fiery improvisation with rich composition. This led to a successful kickstarter campaign to fund their next album, “Fear is the Teacher”, which the band is currently recording with Grammy winning producer Matt Williams. Phan continues to perform with the band, as a solo artist, and in collaborations with other musicians; he has also built a successful guitar teaching practice, which he finds a great source of inspiration.

Phan is a prolific poet, songwriter, and guitarist, with the soul of an improviser. He crafts his songs to give room for improvisation, presence, and self-expression in the moment. He believes that the best live music is when everyone playing is co-creating – which means that every one of his concerts offers audiences a different sound and a unique experience.

Scott Ainslie @ Streamside January 13
Jan 13 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
721 Streamside Dr

January 13th (Sunday) at 3pm, doors at 2:15.
Suggested donation $20.
Refreshments will be served (with beer and wine) for donations to a local charity.

Steeped in traditional music from both sides of the color line, Scott Ainslie is a renowned acoustic blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He learned southern old-time ballads, banjo and fiddle from senior musicians in North Carolina and West Virginia and blues from his black elders in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Mississippi: his roots are deep.

“the kind of musician they don’t make any more, in the mold of the late Pete Seeger – unpretentious, dead serious about his craft, dedicated to preserving traditional American music and instruments, unabashedly faithful to left-liberal values, and so versatile he can make you weep one moment over the story of a dying steel town (“All these houses for sale, and ain’t none of them sold…”) and snicker appreciatively the next at a driving Mississippi blues song full of earthy innuendo.”

-Pamela Constable, The Washington Post

Beer Release: Baby Leif
Jan 16 @ 12:00 pm – 10:00 pm
The Glass Jug Beer Lab

Leif Larson, Son of Lar out of Narnia, was raised to fight the good fight against iHop for The Love of Waffle House. He and his elven warrior princess, Brittany, fight to make sure all Waffle Houses always have coffee and a proper deck of cards at all times of day. To Relax, they make their rounds to The Glass Jug Beer Lab and Beer Study – Durham.

One day, Leif drank too much Event Horizon at Beer Study, then went to The Glass Jug to see Chris, where he accidentally fell into the boil kettle. Thus, a barleywine, Baby Leif, was born.

On January 16th, The Glass Jug and Beer Study Durham will feature Baby Leif on tap. However, only a small amount of Baby Leif will be available, as the rest of Leif is still maturing in bourbon, rum, and apple brandy barrels. Once ready, the barrel-aged version will be released as #BarleywineIsLeif.

Baby Leif is a 9.7% ABV barleywine that is bold and complex with flavors of caramel, toast, and dark fruit that blend perfectly into a very drinkable barleywine that packs a punch. Available on draft at both locations. A limited run of crowlers will be available at The Glass Jug while supplies last.

The first 50 people to purchase a glass of Baby Leif at either location will receive a collectible Leif trading card. These things are going to be hotter than Beanie Babies in the year 1996.
