We are seeking volunteers to assist us in our small after school program for children in West Asheville in low-income housing.  We provide a safe and nourishing environment, healthy snacks, and creative activities.  Our program currently meets during the school year on most Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00-5:00pm. You may volunteer for one or two days a week. 

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Assist with serving snacks
  • Interact with children during activity time
  • Supervise games and outdoor free time
  • For people with background in education, there is also an opportunity to assist with curriculum development and program planning and administration

Requirements:

  • Background check
  • Orientation booklets will be provided
  • Masks are required if unvaccinated

He draws us into the tales like chocolate.

Host Cody Hughes: Cody is a comedian who cut his teeth in Chicago and Atlanta. He is now based out of West North Carolina and tours the Southeast. He has opened for Lewis Black, John Oliver and Maria Bamford among others and hosts the regular Slice of Life Comedy shows at The Orange Peel’s Pulp Lounge.

About Slice of Life Comedy: Slice of Life Comedy is owned and run by long standing Ashevillian Michele Scheve. Michele was the Founder and Publisher of the hit satire newspaper “The Asheville Disclaimer” in 2002 (till 2015). She also Hosts one of 103.3 Asheville FM’ longest running and most popular shows, “Slumber Party AVL”, which began in 2011. In addition to these established platforms, Michele also Co-Founded and Co-Owns Buzz Radio Asheville, which features only local music and comedy 24/7. Slice of Life Comedy began as a partnership, between Michele and comedian Kelly Rowe, doing live shows at Pulp Lounge in 2010, highlighting local up-and-coming comics through Open Mic events. The Hearts for Art project began seven years ago at the Oakland Museum of California and Columbus Museum of Art to encourage art appreciation. Join us and many other museums across the country to spread the love of art through Hearts for Art.

Step 1: Pick up your heart at the welcome desk as you enter the Museum.

Step 2: Fall in love with an artwork and make it official by placing your heart on the floor in front of your favorite.

Step 3: Take a photo of your selection with your heart included and share your love on social media with the tags #heartsforart and @ashevilleartmuseum for a chance to be featured on the Museum’s social media pages.

2023 Volunteer Expo

The Junior League of Asheville, Inc. (JLA) will hold its fifth annual Volunteer Expo, on Saturday, February 11, 2023 from 12 to 3 PM at the Crowne Plaza Expo Center. Modeled after a job fair, this free event will feature local nonprofits looking to fill ongoing and future volunteer needs. Nonprofits in almost every area of community concern will be present at the event: health, poverty, legal aid, environmental stewardship, women’s issues, arts, civic leadership, technology, education and animal welfare.

Excitement for the Volunteer Expo continues to grow. The 2022 event featured over 70 non-profits and was attended by more than 600 community members coming to network and sign up to volunteer with nonprofit organizations.

We invite all area nonprofits to apply to participate in the 2023 Volunteer Expo that will bring hundreds of prospective volunteers, donors and board members to your booth! This is a great opportunity to network, gain exposure and share about your mission.

We also invite all local businesses to be a part of our 2023 Volunteer Expo! Celebrate Valentines Day at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue!

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue’s mission is to better the lives of companion animals through adoption and pet retention programs, a low-cost mobile spay and neuter clinic, lifesaving shelter transfer partnerships, and extensive volunteer and foster networks. Brother Wolf Animal Rescue impacts the lives of thousands of animals each year in the Western North Carolina region.

 

This Valentine’s Day, Brother Wolf is offering a Puppygram package that includes a miniature succulent from local business B.B. Barns, a delicious cupcake, personalized card, and 20 minutes of snuggle time with one of their rescued puppies. If you are interested in sharing the gift of sweet puppy kisses with your special someone this year, a limited number of Puppygrams are available at $175 with all proceeds going towards Brother Wolf Animal Rescue’s life saving work for homeless animals in the WNC area.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Tutor

ESOL tutors serve immigrant adults who want to learn English and/or prepare for the US Naturalization Exam. These students come to Literacy Together with a variety of literacy and English language skill levels. Tutors in this program work with their students two hours each week for at least one year and are supported by the program director throughout their tutoring commitment.
Tutors complete an 8-hour training (which is currently conducted online) before being matched with students. They then receive follow-up support and the option to attend in-service workshops throughout their tutoring commitment. Tutors in this program can work with students for one (1) two-hour session each week or two (2) one-hour sessions each week. Tutoring sessions may take place online or in personThis program welcomes volunteers from over the world who are willing to tutor remotely. We now have tutors in Florida, New York, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Texas, the UK, and Germany!
