Adding to the charm and visual appeal of Ciao! From Italy—sure to be a hit among kids of all ages—is the G-scale model train that travels in and out of each postcard in this enlightening display!

World-class orchid growers and breeders along with regional orchid societies will exhibit at this annual show by the Western North Carolina Orchid Society, with hundreds of orchids presented in carefully crafted displays.

Orchids will be for sale by vendors from Ecuador and across the United States. Attendees should expect rare species, cutting-edge hybrids and something for all orchid lovers. All festival exhibits, programs and educational lectures each day are included. Admission to the festival is $5 per person in addition to the Arboretum’s parking fee. Children 12 and under, free.

Grovewood Gallery will celebrate spring with two days of demos, discounts, and wine on April 1 and 2 from 11am – 4pm. Local artist demonstrations will take place on both days, and gallery merchandise – including furniture, ceramics and jewelry – will be discounted 10 percent. Metro Wines will also be in attendance to serve complimentary drinks to shoppers (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic). This event is free and open to the public.

Join us Sunday, April 2 at the Burntshirt Vineyards Tasting Room and Winery for live music at the vineyard with Ben Phantom! Ben Phantom is a songwriter, videographer, multi-instrumentalist, music producer, traveler, and long-distance hiker. His path, carved by music, has taken him from the North American wilderness to Vietnam, Cambodia, Israel, Central America, and finally to his mountain home in Asheville, North Carolina.

Ben Phantom​ ​is​ ​a​ ​prolific​ ​poet,​ ​songwriter,​ ​and​ ​instrumentalist with the​ ​soul​ ​of​ ​an​ ​improviser. Ben​ ​believes that​ ​the​ ​best​ ​live​ ​music​ ​happens​ ​when​ ​everyone​ ​playing​ ​is​ ​co-creating​. ​As a Vietnamese Jewish American, Phantom uses his music to bridge cultural barriers, honor the past, and create a better future. He carries a strong message of hope and resilience. His mission is to tell stories that heal and create sustainable community. Phantom is a passionate and captivating performer. He writes from the heart, speaks to the soul, and never forgets to find the humor in life. Hit the trails and learn more about The North Carolina Arboretum’s botanically diverse forest with a guided trail walk! April through October, this free hiking program is led by trained volunteer guides who take small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season and each guide’s area of expertise, topics of discussion may include wildflowers, plant and tree identification, natural history and more.

Guided trail walks are limited to 15 people, including the guide, and are not recommended for guests under 16 years of age. Groups depart from the Baker Visitor Center Lobby on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m..

Walks last 1.5 – 2.5 hours, are approximately one to two miles in length. As this program is held rain or shine, all participants should dress appropriately for the weather.

There is no pre-registration; walks are first-come first served and sign up sheets are located in the Baker Visitors Center.

Walks are FREE; however, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply. Arboretum Society Members always park free.

Know Before You Go

• Guided Trail Walks are not recommended for guests under 16 years of age.
• Guided Trail Walks are rain or shine and all participants should be dressed comfortably and for the weather.
• Hikes cover 1-2 miles and last 1.5-2 hours.
• Well-behaved leashed pets are welcome to accompany their owners. In the rare case that a pet is disruptive or negatively impacts the experience, the pet and its owner may be asked to excuse themselves from the guided walk.
• COVID-19 Safety: In order to hear the guide and fully participate in the trail walk, participants will be in close proximity to one another for extended periods of time. While face coverings are not required, participants should use their best judgement to keep themselves and others safe while enjoying the trails. Individuals who are experiencing flu-like symptoms or suspect they may have been exposed to COVID-19 should not participate.
• At this time, no more than 6 spaces may be filled by a single family/group through pre-registration for any one Guided Trail Walk. If additional spaces are available on the day of the Walk, additional members of the family/group may participate. We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to welcoming larger groups in the future.

ALIEN MUSIC CLUB PRESENTS LEONARD COHEN: THE DEEP CUTS

Audiences emerge with their minds blown, saying “I thought I knew Leonard Cohen; I had no idea how prolific he was; This is a whole new universe of songs and emotions.”

People rave about thought-provoking, meaningful songs of love, hate & redemption, with striking, original interpretations/arrangements of unforgettable songs by the late, great Canadian singer/songwriter, often compared to the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Roger Waters & Paul Simon.

They absorb spell-binding performances with rich textures and virtuosity by a stellar lineup featuring Ryan Kijanka on bass (Sirius B, Asheville Symphony), Micah Thomas on drums/vocals (Brushfire Stankgrass, Nuclear Tiger), Scott Sharpe on pedal steel (Steelin’ Time), Franklin Keel on electric cello (Sirius B, Asheville Symphony, Upland Drive) and Jonathan Pearlman (JP) guitar/vocals.

Alien Music Club is essentially an on-going studio/live performance project conceived and produced by Jonathan Pearlman (JP) of Asheville, NC.  JP is currently showcasing two successful tribute shows: “Tom Waits: The Early Years” and “Leonard Cohen: The Deep Cuts”.  Past tribute shows include “Paul Simon Meets The Beatles” and “The British Are Coming”.  He is also showcasing his own original music in a series of jazz/rock/fusion shows starting in 2023.

The list of Pearlman’s musical collaborators is extensive. He has performed with Peggy Ratusz, Zack Page, Connor Law, Ben Colvin, Kelly Jones, Jesse Barry, Ryan Kijanka, Chuck Lichtenberger, Taylor Pierson, Micah Thomas, Jason DeCristofaro, Ben Bjorlie, Linda Mitchell, Jacob Rodriguez, Justin Ray, Justin Watt, Russ Wilson, Reggie Headen, Jay Hoots, Aaron Price, Eric Congdon…The list is long and continues to grow.

THE MOON AND YOU
At its core, The Moon and You is a charismatic husband-and-wife team. Melissa Hyman plays cello, Ryan Furstenberg plays guitar and banjo, and both sing in “voices that sound like they were made for one another” (Bill DeYoung, Connect Savannah). But whatever you might assume based on their gorgeous vocal blend and heartfelt lyrics, this ain’t your basic folk duo. With a rotating cast of talented friends to add unexpected instrumentation to their lineup, The Moon and You never plays the same show twice. This ever-evolving, expandable and collapsible model leaves the band constantly reinventing itself in ways both surprising and satisfying.

Currently calling Asheville, NC home, Furstenberg and Hyman mix up a fresh blend of influences from very different backgrounds. Melissa grew up in the NYC area studying classical cello. Her dad is a professional violinist and formal music instructor, her mom a fan of 60s folk who loves to host a good old fashioned sing-along. Ryan was born and raised among the Eastern NC tobacco fields, learning classic country and 70s rock on harmonica and then guitar. His rich country baritone and easy Southern style bring an undeniable Americana flavor to the table.
