Donor Center Asheville: Critical Need Donate Blood
Jun 15 @ 7:00 am – 7:00 pm
Donor Center Asheville

KEY FACTS:

  • In the past few days, hospital partners are reporting they are using blood at a much higher rate than normal. When demand is high, and the supply is critically low – that is a dangerous equation for the community.
  • Because of the critically low supply, The Blood Connection (TBC) is now having to back-order blood products. This has affected 12 hospital partners so far.
  • 48% of days this month, TBC DID NOT collect enough blood to cover hospitals’ needs. For comparison, in May of 2020 (during the pandemic) TBC collected enough to cover those needs 84% of the days.
  • There is a high likelihood that TBC will have to start rationing blood by the end of the weekend.
  • Heading into a holiday weekend – hospitals are stocking up their blood supply. TBC has already not been able to provide those products.
  • The community is the ONLY solution to this dangerous problem. The blood supply for local hospitals is in the community’s hands.

Juneteenth Celebration

Join Buncombe County Public Libraries in a Community Celebration of Juneteenth!

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Texas, bringing news that the Civil War had ended and to enforce Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, issued two and a half years earlier. The news galvanized African-Americans across Texas. Some celebrated, others left to find family members from whom they had been separated, and still others continued fighting to free themselves from white landowners who did not want to accept the proclamation. In Asheville, African-Americans claimed their freedom in late April 1865, when Union cavalry arrived in the region. Today, June 19th is recognized across the nation as a holiday to celebrate and uplift African-Americans everywhere.

This year, the Buncombe County Commissioners voted to make Juneteenth an official holiday, joining communities across the country to recognize the importance of celebrating this important day.
Celebrate Juneteenth with Buncombe County Public Libraries on Tuesday, June 15 from 5-7 pm at Pack Memorial Library. There will be opportunities for community members of all ages, including:

-Community art and archiving activities

-Opportunities to view historical documents related to enslavement and emancipation held in the Buncombe County Special Collections

-The opportunity to contribute to a community time capsule

-Storytelling, music, and light refreshments

We look forward to celebrating this important holiday with our community!

WNC Repair Cafe

Living Web Farm

WNC Repair Cafe Returns for Summer 2021

After nearly a year off, WNC Repair Cafe is reopening to the community on June 15th for another evening of free repairs.

A repair cafe is an event, where you are invited to bring in broken household objects and meet with volunteer repair specialists who then guide you through the repair process.  Volunteers with WNC Repair Cafe believe that there is value in knowing how to repair, rather than replace, your items, and will be offering repairs at no cost to any and all members of the community.

Specialists in small engine repair, mending, appliance repair, welding, tool repair and carpentry have volunteered from all across Western North Carolina to lend a hand during the event.  Volunteers are encouraged to share their skills, offering a unique opportunity to learn how to do it yourself the next time something breaks. Traditionally, repairs have ranged from small appliances to worn-out clothing, small engines and garden tools to family heirlooms.  The scope of the repairs should be limited only by the imagination of the patrons; if it’s broken, they will try to fix it.

WNC Repair Cafe events for 2021 will be hosted outdoors.  For the safety of our volunteers, masks and social distancing are encouraged.

Donations are encouraged to cover costs of materials and expansion of our in-house tool library;  simple supplies and all labor will be provided at no charge.  Prior notice increases the chance of a successful repair.  Visitors are encouraged to email Dan prior to arriving.
