Jason Allen King:

Jason Allen King is a comedian, writer, actor, filmmaker, and bird watcher from Charlotte, NC. Exploiting his own peculiar personal experiences, family, and relationships (or lack thereof), King’s comedy offers a unique perspective on familiar situations. A northerner who’s been living in the south too long, he has endeared himself to audiences across the country pushing boundaries through a positive and sharp spin on observations and self-deprecation.

Fresh off the taping of his Dry Comedy Special and a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, King is back touring the country. He has opened for renowned comedians like Preacher Lawson, Fortune Feimster, Rob Schneider, Christopher Titus, Colin Quinn, and Dave Attell. He was voted Charlotte’s Favorite Comedian by Elevate Lifestyle Magazine, featured in It’s A Southern Thing’s One of 15 Southern Comics to Watch and Best of the Fest at the Burbank Comedy Festival. King is the host of The Comedy Zone Podcast. He also writes and stars in the popular video series “George & Monty,” which was invited to screen at the L.A. Comedy Shorts Festival.

Jesse Daniel Edwards is an acclaimed songwriter and radio charting artist hailing from the small mountain town of Cuyamaca, CA (pop. 60). As a child, Jesse and his 6 siblings grew up without television, internet, or significant exposure to the outside world- they went without electricity until he was age 12. He spent his time learning to sing harmony to gospel tracks and tinkering on hand-me-down instruments with his grandpa. Leaving home at 16, he spent his late teen years busking on street corners around the US and abroad. He eventually grew to perform upon the festival and university circuits full-time after a chance encounter with Al Bunetta (John Prine), sharing the stage with Morrissey, Lucinda Williams, and John Prine. His songs have been featured in radio, TV, streaming movies, video games, and 2 independent films.

He spent the lockdown working odd jobs, moving back to the American South. There, he picked up the guitar again after a near 2 year hiatus. He began reinventing his music, writing and recording in his home studio profusely, and ultimately planning to hit the stage again as the world reopened. Now he appears for a limited engagement with his 3-piece band of A list players.

Within the Asheville Art Museum’s Collection reside decorative arts by two of the most beloved and well-known Arts and Crafts style artists of Western North Carolina: Walter B. Stephen and William Waldo Dodge Jr. Join Alexis Meldrum, curatorial assistant, for a private tour of the current exhibition Walter B. Stephen Pottery: Cameo to Crystalline where you will see the early cameo works of Nonconnah pottery, learn about Stephen’s experimentations in glaze, and examine his later pottery from Pisgah Forest, which opened just outside of Asheville in 1926.  Many Pisgah Forest objects feature American folk imagery, from covered wagons and livestock to cabins and spinning wheels. Then join Whitney Richardson, associate curator, and get a behind the scenes preview of the silver chosen for the forthcoming exhibition Useful and Beautiful: Silvercraft by William Waldo Dodge. Opening his first handwrought silver shop in Asheville in 1924, Dodge promoted his line of household goods that reflected the Arts and Crafts values of handcraftsmanship. Get a close look at each of Dodge’s hallmarks and consider how his different designs supported William Morris’ saying, “have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

ABOUT THE CURATORS:

• Whitney Richardson, the Museum’s associate curator, specializes in craft, decorative arts, and architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries. Most recently she curated Modernist Design at Black Mountain College and Huffman Gifts of Contemporary Southern Folk Art. She holds an undergraduate degree in architectural history from Columbia University, and a graduate degree in the history of design & decorative arts from Glasgow University where she wrote her thesis on furniture of the British Arts & Crafts Movement as depicted in fairytale illustrations.
• Alexis Meldrum, the Museum’s curatorial assistant, joined the Asheville Art Museum team as curatorial assistant at the start of 2021. She has since led the installation of Rural Avant-Garde: The Mountain Lake Experience, organized by Longwood Center for Visual Arts (VA), and curated the exhibition Walter B. Stephen Pottery: Cameo to Crystalline from the Museum’s Collection. Meldrum earned her undergraduate degree in art history and marketing from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Meldrum holds her master of arts in art history from Texas Christian University, where she studied late-19th and early-20th century portraiture and studio scenes by American painter William Merritt Chase and Franco-Belgian painter Alfred Stevens

See the WNC Nature Center like never before, behind the scenes!  The tour includes learning about how we feed and care for the animals (including the predators, such as the mountain lion), an animal enrichment session, and exclusive interactions with the keepers that care for our animals.  Tickets include admission for the day and takes place mainly outdoors.
