With multiple parks featuring ballfields and volleyball, pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts, Asheville has plenty of opportunities to join pick-up games or play with organized sports leagues. Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) offers a broad line-up of youth athletics programs, adult sports leagues, and special events throughout the year with an emphasis on fair play and enjoyment for any level of experience, including the fall opportunities below.

6v6 Indoor Volleyball League, $200 per team

Registration opens November 27, games begin January 16 for winter season

Upper, middle, and lower divisions play at Tempie Avery Montford Community Center.

Over 40 Basketball League, $60 per player

Registration ends August 24, games begin September 12

Asheville’s newest team sports league provides an opportunity for community members over 40 who want to get back into the game or prefer to play with others around the same age. Sign up as an individual to be placed on a team based on height, position, and skill level for games played at Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center.

Flag Football League, $600 per team

Registration opens August 30, games begin October 17

Upper, middle, and lower divisions play at Asheville Middle School on 211 South French Broad Avenue.

Instructional clinics for beginners and intermediate players teach the basics and build on skills each class at Murphy-Oakley Park.

Doubles Grass Volleyball Tournament, $20 per team

Registration ends September 5, tournament on September 16

Six sets to 21 in pool play for advance and intermediate divisions in which all teams advance to the playoffs on a day of music, fun, and volleyball at Carrier Park.

Intro to Golf, $10 for series with players responsible for their own green fees

Registration ends September 28, games played each Wednesday from October 4-25

Pumpkin Ball Softball Bash Tournament, $150 per team

Registration ends September 30, tournament on October 7

Late Night Wiffleball Tournament, $5 per team

Registration ends November 9, tournament on November 16

Flag Football, $15 per player

Registration ends August 30, games begin September 9

Teams divided by ages 6-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 14-16 practice drills for 30 minutes prior to weekly games with two 20 minute halves at Asheville Middle School on 211 South French Broad Avenue.

Softball Clinic, $10 per player

Registration ends September 3, clinics begin September 11

Instructional five-week clinic with divisions for 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12 year-olds teaches fundamentals through drills and scrimmages at Asheville Middle School on 211 South French Broad Avenue with the intent of building a youth softball program in the future.

Youth Archery Class, $25 per archer

Registration ends October 10, class held each Thursday from October 26-November 16

This introductory course teaches individuals 9-12 years-old range safety and proper shooting techniques.

Winter Basketball League, $35 per player

Registration ends October 31, evaluations begin November 6

Age divisions include 5-6 (instructional), 9-10, 11-12, and 13-15.

Fling the Fletch Junior Disc Golf Open, $5 for beginner and $20 for advanced competitive

A local pro teaches a clinic followed by a nine-hole family fun tournament for beginners ages 8-18 and an 18-hole competitive round for advanced players ages 12-16.

The bar crawl consists of visiting several bars in the city, each with its unique Halloween drink specials, decor, and spooky surprises. From ghostly cocktails to pumpkin beer, each bar offers a special drink to fit the Halloween theme. Don’t get caught in cobwebs, get scared by skeletons or spooky lighting which will be all over this Halloween.
One of our most exciting parts of the event is the costume contest. Participants come dressed in their scariest or most creative costumes, and the winner receives a prize. What will you come up with? We love the creativeness from classic costumes like zombies and ghosts to more modern costumes, you name it, we want to see it.

Grab some friends and prepare to get spooky. In this two-hour workshop, you will learn choreography from Michael Jackson’s Creepy Classic “Thriller” and sip on a Spooky Halloween-themed cocktail (or mocktail if you’d rather). No dance experience is necessary, but costumes are encouraged!

Looking for a spooky fright? Meet ghosts and ghouls and visions of things that go bump in the night at the Haunted Castle on the Hill. This can’t-miss haunted house tends to be on the spooky side, so it’s not recommended for those who scare easily. For more info, call 828-350-2058.

Want to volunteer? 

APR relies on the help of community members to create the Haunted Castle on the Hill atmosphere. If you are 15 years-old or older, you can help with set up, breakdown, or join the Scare Crew (costumes, make-up, and props are provided by APR). The Greenville-centric story opens on Halloween night. While most families make their rounds through the well-known neighborhoods, a handful of kids break off from the group. Hoping to reveal an unspoken Greenville secret, they head to an abandoned mansion along the Reedy River. They knock on the door, and after no answer, a brave little girl says, “Let’s go!” and pushes it open. Lightning flashes to reveal a silhouette of a couple who dance a pas de deux to a string quartet medley of several Michael Jackson-inspired tunes. Music By Michael Jackson and Choreography by Hernan Justo.

ACT’s Horror Movie Tune-Up is an immersive theatrical experience brimming with frights and delights. We’ll play the non-musical version of Little Shop of Horrors (1960) on the big screen with an added twist: interruptions of live musical performances and games. But the fun doesn’t stop there — costumes are required! So… come dressed to possess and you could win spooktacular prizes.

The Pumpkin Pedaller, presented by Industry Nine, is Asheville on Bikes’ (AoB) annual costumed community ride. The event is hosted at New Belgium Brewing on Saturday, Oct 28th.

End of Year Giving Goal

The Pumpkin Pedaller kicks off our end of year giving goal.  Our goal is to raise $150,000 by January 1, 2023.

Pumpkin Pedaller Event schedule:

• 1:30pm – 7pm: Pop-Up Bike Park presented by Kid Cycle Club
• 2:30pm – 3pm: Ride Gathers + Costume contest photo booth
• 3pm:  Ride departs from New Belgium Brewing
• 4pm – 5pm: Staggered return
• 5pm – 7pm: Continued bicycle frolic

There are 2 routes from which to choose:

1. Cruiser Route – 4 miles on mostly protected bike facilities.
2. Main Route – 12 miles on a mix of bike facilities and active roads w/ a few climbs.

The bar crawl consists of visiting several bars in the city, each with its unique Halloween drink specials, decor, and spooky surprises. From ghostly cocktails to pumpkin beer, each bar offers a special drink to fit the Halloween theme. Don’t get caught in cobwebs, get scared by skeletons or spooky lighting which will be all over this Halloween.
One of our most exciting parts of the event is the costume contest. Participants come dressed in their scariest or most creative costumes, and the winner receives a prize. What will you come up with? We love the creativeness from classic costumes like zombies and ghosts to more modern costumes, you name it, we want to see it.

As the night goes on, the bars become more crowded, you won’t want to miss out on the high energy level of the dance floor. Continuum Tattoo Collective Presents CYBERDOME: A Spectacular Halloween Dance Party to Benefit Crossnore Communities for Children

Hendersonville, NC- Continuum Tattoo Collective is proud to announce CYBERDOME, an electrifying cyberpunk apocalypse Halloween event aimed at making a huge impact in the community by supporting Crossnore Communities for Children. This year, Continuum Tattoo Collective is taking its annual Halloween event to a whole new level, promising an immersive experience like no other.

CYBERDOME will transport attendees into a world of dystopian wonder, where they will be mesmerized by thrilling performances, incredible music, and jaw-dropping costumes. The event, set to take place on October 28th of 2023, will push the boundaries of imagination, creating an unforgettable evening of entertainment and fundraising for a worthy cause.

In an effort to enhance the event experience, CYBERDOME will feature a four-course dining buffet, signature cocktails, and an exciting costume contest with remarkable prizes. Attendees can mark their calendars for September 2nd when Continuum Tattoo Collective will announce the detailed menu, cocktails, and contest prizes on their website.

To ensure guests are fueled up for the night, CYBERDOME will provide a delectable dining experience, including a delicious salad, mouthwatering entrees, and delectable sides. This immersive dining experience will be available before the party, allowing attendees to feast and indulge in the dystopian ambiance.

As attendees arrive at 5:30 p.m., they will be welcomed into the cyberdome through the PROMENADE, an enchanting entrance that sets the tone for the evening. From 5:30 pm to 7 pm, the WITCHING HOUR happy hour will offer complimentary cocktails that transport taste buds into the future, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.

At 7:15 p.m., Empyrean Arts will captivate attendees with an awe-inspiring performance featuring breathtaking aerial displays. The night will continue with Rubiks Groove, a sensational concert that will keep guests dancing until 10 pm. Additionally, an unpredictable mystery performance will add an extra layer of intrigue to the evening.

To satisfy attendees’ sweet tooth, the DESSERT COFFEE TABLE will offer a delightful array of treats from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. At 10 pm, the event will hold an exciting moment of ANNOUNCEMENTS, where a panel of esteemed judges will crown the best costumes of the night. The winners will take home prizes valued up to $1000, adding to the excitement and anticipation.

The party doesn’t stop there! From 10 pm until 2 am, the UPSIDE DOWN AFTER-PARTY with Dagget Productions will keep the energy and excitement surging through the cyberdome, creating a party experience attendees won’t want to miss.

On October 28th, 6 PM “Hell Comes to Flavortown” we’re crankin’ up the gasps for the ultimate Halloween rager! Get ready to taste flavors that’ll punch your taste buds in the face, with Boy Howdy Burgers and Mount Patisserie donuts! Then dance to beats from DJ Bridal Parti Bucardii that’ll pump you up, and step into GUY SCIERY’s lair, filled with epic Halloween decor that’ll freak you out, bruh. It’s gonna be DONKEY SAUCE!

Looking for a spooky fright? Meet ghosts and ghouls and visions of things that go bump in the night at the Haunted Castle on the Hill. This can’t-miss haunted house tends to be on the spooky side, so it’s not recommended for those who scare easily. For more info, call 828-350-2058.

APR relies on the help of community members to create the Haunted Castle on the Hill atmosphere. Full Moon Socials flies in deejay’s from Miami every month so you can experience edm, hip hop, funk and latin music from South Beach the home of America’s biggest rave and Music festival Ultra.

Wild Women Witches and Warlocks Float Join me for a semi-unofficial witches and warlocks full moon float down the French Broad through town! We’ll gather together just after sunset to set shuttle and paddle a few miles together in our spooky costumes under the full mood. Bring your own craft that you are comfortable in and a witchy hat! I will be accepting donations to the Wild Woman Scholarship Fund in addition to ~$5-20 to cover insurance. I will provide stickers, some witch hats, and glow sticks. Let’s get witchy
