Exhibition. Paintings. Music
A survey of 19th century Nationalism in the Arts through the works of Russian composers, members of the Mighty Five. Despite mockery from mainstream critics and audiences, the group members continued their pursuit of finding their unique voices. Their involvement with artists in other fields led to frequent connections between visual art and music. Join us on an expedition to the past as Mr. Begelman explores and deconstructs the rise of great Russian music through the works of prolific geniuses. Featured composer Musorgsky

Impressions and Passions
Step into one of Claude Monet’s gardens and delight in the Impressionist period when music sought to convey moods or capture feelings, using unusual ways of looking at ordinary things. Mimicking the visual artists of the time, the structure of a work of art became subordinate to its effect. In the years containing the first movie theater and the invention of color photography, the world was brimming with opportunities to fill life with audio and visual encounters. Discover how a relatively small and rogue, in the eyes of many traditionalists, group of painters started one of the most recognized styles in the world that translated into music and literature. Musical brush
Can a composer be inspired by a painting? Can a painting be brought to life with music by giving the canvas a voice? Can you paint sound? Can a story be told with brush strokes or notes instead of words? In search of answers, come with us on a journey through times to witness how visual and musical artists inspired each other and produced some of the most creative works of art. Featured composers Liszt, Respighi.
What goes on behind the curtains? In this course students learn the ins and outs of technical theatre and backstage work, including safety, basic light and sound board operation, and stage management. Students will then put their skills to practice by covering technical and backstage roles during Youth Production Class performances of The Giver. Students will split tech and performance dates so some scheduling conflicts may be accommodated. Tuition will be $225.00 – payment plans and scholarships will both be available.

Cook teams of 4-6 individuals are invited to bring ingredients and prepare meals onsite or bring meals that have been prepared elsewhere. To meet our dietary standards, we ask that each meal provides a meat, vegetable and starch.

ABCCM Transformation Village provides up to 100 beds of transitional housing and will provide emergency shelter beds, post Covid-19. Transforming lives is through four developmental phases called Steps to Success including stabilization, life skills, education and reintegration. We are honored to report that 8 out of 10 leave us with a living wage job and permanent housing.
Transformation Village gives hope, healing, health and a home to single women, mothers with children, and female Veterans experiencing homelessness. We provide residents a fresh start and a place to heal surrounded and supported by Christian love, trust, education and companionship.
We are seeking energetic volunteers to prepare and serve meals for our residents for lunch and dinner. This opportunity provides you with the chance to prepare meals in our commercial kitchen alongside our trained staff while serving the women and children of Transformation Village.
Asheville band Rooster is Annie Myers and Erin Kinard and was formed in 2016 around a campfire, but the two had performed separately for many years prior. Since then, they have performed throughout Western North Carolina, creating new songs and arrangements of beloved Americana. They perform an energetic combination of folk country and classic Americana, driven by their powerful vocal harmony and soulful drum/guitar instrumentation. Rooster’s debut album ‘Bloodroot’ was recorded in Swannanoa in 2019, released in March of 2020 and made it on WNCW’s top 100 albums of that year. Their orchestrations are clean and uncluttered, but with a raw, gritty edge. They seem right at home in a coffee house, wine bar, brew pub, honky-tonk or at a backyard barbecue.

Registration is now open for the next session of indoor youth tennis classes starting February 28th at Hendersonville Racquet Club. Kids are put in groups based on age and ability with seven levels available. The session is six weeks long and is $79 for members or $99 for non-members for one class a week plus a play day at the end of the session. Two days a week (12 sessions) is $129/169.
Our youth tennis program has something for any child who wants to play. From beginner to high performance player, we put them into situations where they will be challenged and can succeed while having a fun time doing it!
The format for this session is having classes once or twice for six weeks. Each level of class is offered once during the weekday and once on Saturday. Then the session concludes with a fun “Play Day” where they can get match experience. All classes are taught by certified tennis professionals and will be held on HRC’s indoor courts.
The ASHEVILLE 8 STRING COLLECTIVE is a jazz/funk/blues/fusion group that features Dan Clare on 8-string hybrid guitar. A variety of local professional musicians bring their talents to the group in WNC for larger ensemble gigs

Our Lenten program this year will be led by the Sisters of the Community of St. Mary. These Episcopal Nuns live at their convent in Sewanee, TN and are members of a monastic movement that goes back to 1865 when their order was started in New York. The sisters will take turns sharing with us the richness of their ancient monastic way of life. Together we will learn about their Benedictine way of living that includes prayers, work, radical hospitality, rich community, accountability, and more. While many think of monks and nuns as being something restricted to the Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church has a long history of monastic life that continues to influence our churches to this day.
For the first session on March 3, we will host the Prioress of the Community of St. Mary, Sister Madeleine Mary, who will travel from Sewanee to be with us. Sister Madeleine Mary has been living in religious life for over 50 years having entered the cloister after teaching middle school in New York and spending time advocating for environmental justice issues.
In the sessions following on March 10, March 17, March 24, March 31, and April 7, we will meet in person at the Parish Hall to gather for a virtual visit with other Sisters from the Order, including Sister Hannah Winkler, who made her life profession in January 2021, and Sister Elizabeth Grace, who will share on the Rule of St. Benedict’s emphasis on humility. Firearms are a part of daily discourse in the US and the world whether you like them… or not. Some people grew up with exposure to firearms and some people have never seen one in person, and nor would they want to. Regardless of your position on the issue, all of us can benefit from understanding what certain terms mean that we hear about in the news and culture so that we may have more informed discussions with one another. Our presenter, Clark Glenn, will lead a non-political, non-pro/con, basic educational discussion on what various terms mean, and what different types of firearms are, including the definition of the word “firearm” itself, as well as examples of state and local laws that apply to us all here in Buncombe county. His talk will be followed by time for Q & A. This program will be a slide presentation with discussion, there are no firearms allowed in the building. Clark Glenn has been around firearms his whole life. He has instructed shooting sports for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and he is a certified rife instructor. Clark is a former high school educator who was on the faculty of the prestigious Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ and is an FAA certified flight and ground instructor and commercial pilot. He has been a wilderness educator for 20 years and has lead over 150 wilderness trips on 5 continents. He lives in East Asheville with his family. This program is registration based. DeeOhGee is the new chapter in the story of a band of brothers who’ve now been through it! Emerging on a fresh platform to share their unique blend of great American music.
Formerly touring under the name “Blackfoot Gypsies”, they have dropped the old name but kept the same spirit. A spirit arising from a life dedicated to Rock-n-Roll. The group established a loyal fanbase across the US and Europe, while releasing a catalogue of music documenting their journey. After going through inevitable changes over the course of hundreds of shows and thousands of miles – it only felt right right to start a new book, with a sharper sense of who they are and what they’re doing.
DeeOhGee is now comprised of Matthew Paige, Zack Murphy, and Dylan Whitlow. Each member contributes songs and brings different musical expertise to the table. These 3 musicians cover a huge spectrum of instruments – everything from timpani to pianos and banjos to harmoniums. Every single note and voice you hear on their recordings, is them. No studio musicians. They are beyond dedicated to their craft and eagerly work toward giving the world their life’s work. Collecting vibrations from every walk of life in this world and turning them into a hummable tune, with a wink of humor. Now, after all these years of honing their craft, the music is a concentrated serum exported from their souls, for all to share and enjoy. Dad’s an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling manic depression for 16 years. HCA-Mission is sponsoring Painting for Prevention, an education and fundraising event at the Russell and Armstrong Gallery, 24 N. Lexington Avenue, Downtown Asheville. Gallery owners Jeremy Russell and Alicia Anne Armstrong have made art for 20 years in Asheville. They have graciously opened their space to help us raise awareness about child abuse prevention. The itinerary for the evening includes speeches from prevention partners from Mountain CAC and BC Foster Care, refreshments, music, and an auction for one of Jeremy Russell’s pieces. Proceeds from the auction will benefit Mountain CAC’s prevention program.

The Mike Rhodes Fellowship is a collective, creative endeavor curated by drummer Mike Rhodes that features a different lineup of Asheville’s most talented musicians each performance. The search for spontaneous creativity within the chemistry of each group to find the place in the middle of the compass where north, south, east, and west become one and magic happens.

Foundation Woodworks announces the 2nd Annual Turned and Carved Wood Bowl Exhibition and Sale

During the month of April, Foundation Woodworks will feature work from a dozen local and regional wood turning and hand carved wood artisans. In conjunction with the show, the Gallery will offer a 10% discount on select turnings, as well as, turned and hand carved bowls.

Kate Coleman is the Asheville Gallery of Art’s featured artist for the month of April. Visitors to the gallery will have the entire month to view her outstanding acrylic-on-wood paintings of nature. “Avian Skies” will run from April 1st to April 30th.
April is a lovely month. Winter has passed, the transformation of Spring is upon us, and warmer days are ahead. The fresh skies of Spring flaunt beautiful clouds and ominous storms in the distance. “The colors of paint that I choose are warm and bright, echoing the Spring colors that are emerging in nature. In creating this body of work, I focused on birds and the amazing skies of Spring.”
Kate Coleman can’t remember a time when she wasn’t an artist. “I believe that all children are artists, and I never grew out of it.” After Kate received her degree in Fine Art, she went on to design and create a studio pottery line with her husband. Upon discovery that she and her daughter share a passion for painting, Kate began her newest creative journey. She began on this path of mixed-media due to her passion for nature and her love of painting, and through this journey, she has found herself immersed in painting her unique portraits of birds and nature.
Defining them by more than simple appearance, Kate goes further by layering information, sourced by vintage books and maps, onto each specific piece. She searches used bookstores to find vintage books on birds and nature, and using the pages to apply visual texture to her paints, she applies more information specifically to each piece. The result is a very unique combination of visual texture and defining text, which presents a unique work. Her painted portraits of birds and nature are completed in acrylic paint on wood panels, and she often creates frames that further identify and explain each piece. Giving a warmth and light to each piece she creates, she attempts to reveal the true character of each distinctive image.
Kate’s painting of “The Peacock” is mixed media, acrylic, feathers, and book pages on wood. “I love the dramatic opening of the peacock’s feathers. This unique bird brings beauty to the world.”
“The Tanagers” is a 24 X 52 piece in mixed media, acrylic, book pages and wood. “The male and female Scarlet Tanagers’ differences in color intrigues me. I truly enjoy spotting this beautiful bird from time to time.”
On “Sunset in the Blue Ridge Mountains”, a work in acrylic, “This is a common scene from my home – the Red-Tailed Hawk with mobbing crows. Sunsets here are striking and each one is unique.”
Visitors to the Asheville Gallery of Art will be able to view Kate’s show from April 1st through April 30th in downtown Asheville, NC. Kate will be present for a special event on First Friday, April 1st, to meet the artist from 5pm-8pm.
