This artwork should do the following:

●  Celebrate the vital role of African American history and culture in Asheville.
●  Connect visually to the site through interpretation of historical and cultural aspects​.
●  Be durable, low maintenance, and appropriate to the location. Integral to creating this artwork(s), is the artists’ willingness to learn about the community and have a dialogue with interested community members to help inspire and guide content creation. A range of materials/applications will be considered, including painted murals and digitally printed murals. Covid-Friendly Clean-Up Stations: #AVLquaranclean

We’ve learned a lot about adapting this year. Back in March, we canceled all of our upcoming events and volunteer opportunities. But it didn’t stop you from working to make Asheville cleaner and safer.

So we amped up our Cleanup Supply Station program, fully stocking existing locations and adding on 2 new stations, for a total of 7 Cleanup Supply Stations throughout Asheville & Buncombe County. We threw in our catchy #AVLquaranclean hashtag on top, and you did the rest!

Since March, 132 volunteers used these stations 36 times to collect over 2,700 pounds of litter from creeks and roads on their own time!! We are also incredibly grateful to Mountain Xpress for donating newspaper stands to be repurposed into these supply stations, the City of Asheville and Buncombe County Government for supporting cleanups, and to Mast General Store and Asheville Sun Soo Martial Arts for hosting our newest stations.

These stations remain stocked and ready for your quarantine pod’s next outing. Remember to sign out supplies, report the trash back to us afterwards, and return supplies for cleaning and reuse! January is National Blood Donor Month

The Blood Connection various locations

Amid the arrival of the long awaited COVID-19 vaccine, the demand for a well-known treatment for those battling the virus, convalescent plasma, has skyrocketed.

The Blood Connection (TBC), a non-profit community blood center, has seen the demand for this life-saving product triple in the past few months because of its effectiveness.
However, the need for convalescent plasma continues to far outrun the supply.
The release of the COVID-19 vaccine has created a challenge for TBC, as it reduces the number
of people who are eligible to give convalescent plasma. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA)
has recommended that donors who have received the vaccine should not donate convalescent
plasma but can donate whole blood (a regular blood donation). To give convalescent plasma,
donors must be symptom free for at least 14 days and must have proof of a positive COVID-19
test or positive COVID-19 antibody test.

Opening a new restaurant or any business is far from easy by any sense of the word especially during a pandemic. Tremendous challenges, limited alcohol sales, curfews & now limitations to 30% indoor capacity.
This being said, we have chosen to persevere & PUSH THROUGH with our original full menu, 20 beers on draft, nice selection of delicious vino which will be available ALL DAY with 6 or 7 days in mind. Modified Stay at Home Order Extended Through January 29th

Governor Cooper announced on Wednesday, January 6th that the North Carolina Modified Stay at Home Order requiring people to remain home between the hours of 10 pm and 5 am would remain in effect through at least Friday, January 29th. The announcement was in response to the continued rise in COVID-19 cases in North Carolina and the strain on the hospital systems.
Secretary Cohen also issued a Secretarial Directive with warnings for North Carolinians to avoid indoor spaces without masks and gatherings.

The Apprentice Link database connects people who are serious about learning the sustainable farming trade with farmers who are willing to teach them in an apprenticeship setting. Our programs’ emphasis is specifically in the Southern Appalachians, with a focus on farms that participate in local Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT) programs.

To be included in this listing, Organic Growers School has vetted each farm to determine of the following criteria has been met:

  • Farms are actively engaged in the local community.
  • Farms are using organic and/or sustainable production methods. Organic Certification and other certifications are not required, but we do ask that farms and farmers are “in-the-know” and conscientiously practicing organic standards.
  • Farms are dedicated to training new farmers by providing education as a pinnacle element of their apprenticeship program.

Buncombe County Public Libraries now offers Transparent Language Online free to all library cardholders. Whether you’re starting at the very beginning or you’re an intermediate learner looking to enhance your vocabulary, Transparent Language Online can help. With over 110 languages to choose from, including English for non-native speakers, there is something for every learner. With mobile apps for iOS and Android devices, learners can enjoy the freedom to learn at home, in the library, or on the go.

Transparent Languages includes learning for kids of all ages. KidSpeak introduces children to English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Mandarin Chinese. The program teaches words and phrases suitable for learners’ age, needs, and interests. More than 40 activities, puzzles, and songs guide young learners through the basics, along with a cartoon friend who speaks the language.

If the last ten months has taught us anything, it’s the fact that we must be willing to make hard decisions in the present so that we can have a brighter future. And with that said, out of an abundance of caution and with respect to Governor Cooper’s new executive order, LEAF has decided to close our LEAF Global Arts center for the month of January.

We hope that this will allow the COVID-19 numbers in our community to decrease and restrictions to be lifted. We encourage everyone who can to stay home, wear a mask, wash your hands, and practice social distancing. In standard LEAF fashion, music & arts won’t stop. We will continue to offer virtual programming and resources to our community.
