Useful and Beautiful: Silvercraft by William Waldo Dodge features a selection of functional silver works by Dodge drawn from the Museum’s Collection. Organized by the Asheville Art Museum and curated by Whitney Richardson, associate curator, this exhibition will be on view in the Debra McClinton Gallery at the Museum from February 23 through October 17, 2022.
William Waldo Dodge Jr. (Washington, DC 1895–1971 Asheville, NC) moved to Asheville in 1924 as a trained architect and a newly skilled silversmith. When he opened for business promoting his handwrought silver tableware, including plates, candlesticks, flatware (spoons, forks, and knives), and serving dishes, he did so in a true Arts and Crafts tradition. The aesthetics of the style were dictated by its philosophy: an artist’s handmade creation should reflect their hard work and skill, and the resulting artwork should highlight the material from which it was made. Dodge’s silver often displayed his hammer marks and inventive techniques, revealing the beauty of these useful household goods.
The Arts and Crafts style of England became popular in the United States in the early 1900s. Asheville was an early adopter of the movement because of the popularity and abundance of Arts and Crafts architecture in neighborhoods like Biltmore Forest, Biltmore Village, and the area around The Grove Park Inn. The title of this exhibition was taken from the famous quotation by one of the founding members of the English Arts and Crafts Movement, William Morris, who said, “have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Not only did Dodge follow this suggestion; he contributed to American Arts and Crafts silver’s relevancy persisting almost halfway into the 20th century.
“It has been over 15 years since the Museum exhibited its collection of William Waldo Dodge silver and I am looking forward to displaying it in the new space with some new acquisitions added,” said Whitney Richardson, associate curator. Learn more at ashevilleart.org.

Passion begets passion, beauty begets beauty…..this is thought that is in professional photographer, Monica Stevenson’s, mind every moment she spends
at Red Bell Run. The photographs for this exhibition are inspired by Mary Adams, the owner of Red Bell Run, affection for and dedication to the animals and plants that thrive at her equine sanctuary. As with much of Monica’s work, she leans heavily on her own collaborative spirit and the generous nature of her artistic partners–Preston Wainwright, floral designer, Thomas Ignatius and Sean Smith, both illustrative designers, to support some of the exhibit’s featured works. The resulting pictures included in this show, photographed with a large format digital camera and hand printed, display an abundance of beautiful details– flowers, leaves, illustrations, textures, colors, dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, expressions, shapes, movement, fur, teeth, limbs–all the things that make up the natural world that is Red Bell Run.

Like all the best plays, Blood Knot is both relatable and searingly intimate. And like all the best plays, it will get under your skin. It is a play that asks us to dig beneath the surface of what makes us kin and what happens when we don’t like what we find there. Blood Knot, by renowned South African playwright Athol Fugard, is about two brothers, one black and the other light-skinned, grappling with crippling poverty and lonely isolation—living a strained existence in a one-room shack in apartheid South Africa. The brothers’ desperation exposes the complex angles of their relationship in this powerful, revolutionary play.

The 2nd annual Furman women’s basketball “Hoops & Heels” fundraising and women’s empowerment event is scheduled for Oct. 5 at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville.
National and Olympic champion coaching great Dawn Staley is the featured speaker for the event, which gets underway with a VIP cocktail hour at 6:00 p.m., followed by the dinner and program beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Registration and multiple sponsorship and ticket opportunities are detailed HERE.
“We are extremely excited to welcome National and Olympic Champion Dawn Staley as our speaker for this year’s “Hoops and Heels” event,” said Furman head coach Jackie Carson. “The interest in women’s basketball, particularly in the state of South Carolina, is at an all-time high due to Dawn’s program at the University of South Carolina. She is not only an amazing leader on the court but personifies true servant leadership with her civic and community engagement across the country. Her words will empower all attendees, and we look forward to the Greenville and Furman communities joining us for a legendary evening.”
Fresh off a 2022 NCAA National Championship and a gold medal winning performance in the Tokyo Olympics as the head coach of the USA Women’s Basketball National Team, Staley is one of the most respected and successful coaches in the game of basketball. As a stand-out student-athlete at the University of Virginia and in the WNBA, she has exemplified greatness both on the court and the sidelines. Staley’s legacy on the basketball landscape was immortalized when she was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2013.
Carson ’00, who starred for Furman as a player over a brilliant four-year career, is entering her 13th year as head coach at her alma mater. The Paladins are coming off their most successful season in 22 years and competed in postseason play for the third time in four seasons.
On Wednesday, October 5, enjoy the stylings of singer-songwriter Alyssa Bonagura during the live concert series, Orchard Sessions.
One listens and it becomes crystal clear that Alyssa Bonagura was born to make music. With a voice that touches somewhere deep inside, Alyssa’s soulful sound and powerful lyrics will send you jet-setting into a broad range of human emotions. Growing up on the open roads of America, with her RCA country recording artist parents, Baillie & The Boys, made it impossible for Alyssa not to witness the power and magic of music. At just 3 weeks old, her cradle was the gentle rocking of a tour bus. Her playground encompassed sound checks at fairs and festivals and backstage dressing rooms at a slew of different venues including the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Award shows.
The Orchard Sessions concert series brings a stellar lineup of well-known musicians to The Farm at Old Edwards – located at 336 Arnold Road in Highlands. For more information about Orchard sessions – And to book online visit oldedwardshospitality.com/orchardsessons. Online ticket sales open to the public on September 21.

“Music to Your Ears” discussion series at Asheville Guitar Bar. Led by Asheville-based author and music journalist Bill Kopp (that’s me), Music to Your Ears explores significant albums, artists and movements in popular music. The event is held at the Asheville Guitar Bar in the River Arts District on the first Wednesday of each month. The next installment is Wednesday, October 5, and the topic will be John Lennon’s Rock ‘N’ Roll album. But not just the record: I’ll be joined by Jay Bergen, author of Lennon, the Mobster & the Lawyer. Jay was John and Yoko’s lawyer when they squared off in Federal court against mob-connected music mogul Morris Levy. He got to know the couple quite well, and provides keen insight into the making of the album and the legal controversies that would ensue.

The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to announce that people world-wide can now explore more of the Museum’s diverse Collection of 20th- and 21st-century American art online from the comfort of their homes, on the go with their smart phones, or from their favorite coffee shop.
“This was a massive undertaking, and it’s a tremendous accomplishment,” says Executive Director Pamela Myers. “I cannot express my gratitude to the Museum’s talented curatorial team. They’ve dedicated so much time, energy, and thought to enable these artworks to be experienced and enjoyed on an easily accessible, international platform.”
To date, the curatorial team has meticulously digitized approximately 20 percent of the Museum’s Collection and uploaded it to the online database. “Our evolving Collection has grown to nearly 7,500 works, with 1,500 of them already available online,” says Associate Registrar and Project Lead Chris Whitten. “We’ve already devoted several years to reach this point in the process,” he says, “and plan on regularly adding hundreds more each quarter until the entire Collection is online.”
A Robust, Expanding Collection
Associate Curator Whitney Richardson says the Museum’s Collection has experienced dramatic growth in the past five years. In fact, it has almost doubled in size and keeps expanding. “Like most museums, we have more art in our Collection than we can show at any one time. With the Collection growing at the rate that it is, this digital platform allows us to share more of what is in our holdings.

ince 2003, the Bearfootin’ Art Walk has helped raise funding for Downtown Hendersonville and a variety of local non-profits. In addition to raising funds, the bears offer a window into good work being done by community organizations in Henderson County.
The Bearfootin’ Bears arrive as blank slates before local artists transform each in a spectacular fashion, with creative themes ranging from Mona Lisa to Blue Ridge Mountain scenery. After the “Reveal” event in early May, the bears then take up residence in downtown Hendersonville for the duration of the summer and fall, up until auction. Participants bid during the auction to raise funds for local non-profits and Downtown Hendersonville. Winning bids up to $3,000 are split evenly between the downtown program and the nonprofit chosen by the sponsor, while bid amounts exceeding $3,000 are directed entirely to the non-profit. In 2021, the Bears raised more than $100,000, and in 2022 we hope to continue the tradition of giving.
