An exhibition highlighting the works of John James Audubon juxtaposed with the work of 21st-century artists who continue his tradition of animal allegories and metaphors is currently on view at the Asheville Art Museum. The exhibition features more than 40 works and will be on display in the Explore Asheville Exhibition Hall through November 30.

Hendersonville City Council Members are venturing outside the traditional council meeting format to offer a series of ‘Council Conversations’ in the community. 2020 marks the third year Council Members have hosted collaborative meetings in various neighborhoods throughout the City.
“It is more important than ever for elected leaders to remain accessible to their citizens,” said Hendersonville Mayor Barbara Volk. “These meetings give the public an opportunity to ask questions and interact with City Council in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.”
Each meeting will last approximately one hour and be hosted by an individual member of City Council. Various City staff members will be available to answer questions as well.

On exhibit Saturdays and Sundays from 12 – 4 p.m. (weather permitting), Rocky Cove Railroad is a G-Scale (garden scale) model train that demonstrates the coming of trains to western North Carolina at the turn of the 20th century. The exhibit is located below the Grand Garden Promenade.

The eighth annual CiderFest NC fundraiser will be held in a brand-new format this fall that offers loyal guests the chance to celebrate, sample and savor cider safely and responsibly.
While the large annual festival will not be offered this fall in light of current health concerns, the event will continue this year through CiderFest Tours: small-group curated tours of three Asheville cideries that are being offered in partnership with local business Leap Frog Tours.
The tours will allow participants to visit three of Asheville’s cideries — Noble Cider, Urban Orchard Cider Company – West and TreeRock Social Cider House & Mead Bar — for intimate, small-group tasting sessions to sample unique takes on the craft beverage on each of the locations. Proceeds will be shared between Leap Frog Tours, the three participating cideries and Green Built Alliance.
To offer the largest number of people the opportunity to participate, the four-hour tours will be offered from 3 to 7 p.m. on every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in October.
Tours can be reserved for groups of 2 to 14 individuals, and bookings open up today. To prioritize safety in light of COVID-19, all tours will be private without combining reservations from separate parties. (Visit our website or Leap Frog’s booking page for a full list of COVID-19 precautions being taken for the tours.)
The cost is $85 per person. The price includes a tasting at each cidery, a souvenir CiderFest tasting glass, and transportation by Leap Frog Tours from Aloft Hotel in downtown Asheville.

Strung Like a Horse is known for their signature brand of Americana, distilled from old-school storytelling, roots-rock and bluegrass instrumentations, and alt-rock edge. Mississippi-bred, Chattanooga-based frontman Clayton Maselle brings the influences of John Hartford, Split Lip Rayfield, Danny Barnes, the Band, Violent Femmes, and Old Crow Medicine Show to his singular songs. The band’s authenticity, unpredictability, boundless energy, and great fondness for a good time have made their live shows a cult favorite. This summer, the band recorded their first studio album, Whoa!, with multiple Grammy-winning producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, John Prine, Brandi Carlile, Calexico/Iron & Wine, Margo Price, Al Green, Josh Ritter), to be released on Transoceanic Records in early 2020.

The Adventure Center of Asheville is excited to be the 2020 venue for the 8th Annual The Haunted Trail presented by Mellow Mushroom. The no-touch no-contact outdoor Haunted Trail is the only Halloween event in Asheville that is ideal for children ages 3-12 years old. Experience a family-friendly heart pumping walk with live actors (at a distance), spooky sounds, and spectacular props. The younger ghouls can enjoy the (actor-free) “Sweet Peek Tour” of the Trail at 6:30pm before it gets dark.
This year The Treetops Adventure Park Aerial Glow Trail will also be available for ages 4 and over. Climb on one family-friendly aerial trail while it is illuminated with thousands of colored twinkle and laser lights.
In addition to the Trails, there will also be spooky live entertainment, no touch activities while in line, and food and beverages available including hot chocolate. It is a perfect way to celebrate the Halloween season with the family.
As the Haunted Trail and the Adventure Center are committed to safety, Social Distancing and Wearing Face Masks (for ages 4 years old and over) are required. The Haunted Trail Scenes will have barriers and at least a 10-foot space between guests and the performers. Guests lining up for both activities will be separated into Family Groups.
The music of Asheville trio Southron Rancor is both rustic and etheric. Existing in that nebulous realm of post punk their songs are conjured as sonic incantations possessing topography and nostalgia, ranging from shimmering anthems to washed out space tonk; aloft with exo romantic turn of this century prose. Southron Rancor presents their new eponymous debut album, available on heavy vinyl.

Tuesday, September 22nd Governor Roy Cooper announced that some NC small businesses experiencing disruptions to their operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible and benefit from a $40 million relief program to help offset fixed costs like rent, mortgage interests, and utility bills.
The NC Mortgage, Utility, and Rent Relief (MURR) is administered by the NC Department of Commerce and can provide up to $20,000 in relief funds per qualifying business location. Business applicants from certain industry sectors that have not been able to operate during COVID-19 may apply for up to two of their businesses.
Applicants can apply for up to four months of mortgage interest or rent expenses, and utility expenses. The help offers relief for some of the fixed costs a business cannot easily control on its own. Applications to the program should open next week and will be addressed on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants must certify that they were closed during the period of April 1 to July 31, 2020; they expect to be able to operate after the COVID crisis has passed; and they have not been reimbursed by any other federal source for the expenses they seek to reimburse through this program.

Online native tree and plant sale (Oct 2nd-18th). Individuals will be able to purchase from a wide variety of plants and trees provided by participating partner nurseries (with all proceeds going to GreenWorks programs).
Virtual Dance Party on October 16th: Gather up your pod and safely dance the evening away in your own living room. The event will be kid-friendly and have lots of opportunities for audience participation.

The purpose of our study is to determine if RunRA (a mobile app designed by patients with RA) can help you track how you are feeling and help improve your communication with your rheumatologist leading to better disease management. What’s Involved: -Be willing to have the mobile app, RunRA, downloaded onto your phone for your use. All data is stored to your personal phone. -Complete six short surveys about the burden of your RA and its treatment over the next 15 months. Each survey takes about 10 minutes and can be completed via email or telephone based on your preference. -You may be asked to participant in two interviews. These take about 30 minutes and will occur with a member of the research team over the phone at a time that is convenient for you. -You will be able to receive up to 50 dollars in gift cards for your participation in the surveys. -If selected for an interview, you are able to receive up to 60 dollars in gift cards for the interviews. From our home to yours: students and faculty share new concerts, living room recitals, and masterclasses.
BMC saxophone faculty members Joseph Lulloff and Henning Schröder share a new work, Saxology, by Marc Mellits. The piece was commissioned and recently premiered by the Arizona State University Saxophone Choir, including the Capitol Quartet, helíos_, and the Seyon Quartet.
BMC favorite Kelly Hall-Tompkins, violin, joins Donna Weng Friedman, piano, for a stunning performance of Nocturne by Lili Boulanger. The French composer lived from 1893-1918 and was the first female winner of the Prix de Rome prize in composition.

The Caldwell Arts Council and the City of Lenoir, NC seek sculptors to participate in Tucker’s Gallery, an outdoor sculpture sales gallery with three-dimensional artwork mounted in 12 pedestal-planters in downtown Lenoir for up to one year. Artists receive stipends for delivery and retrieval of sculptural art, and sculptures may be sold with 30% commission to the Caldwell Arts Council.

Flat Rock Playhouse is proud to partner with The Breath Project to create an archive of 8 minute and 46 second works of live theater from multidisciplinary theater artists of color who are responding to this moment in history. All submissions that meet the Breath Project guidelines will be featured in the archive, and as partners in the project, CJ Barnwell will be the curator from our theater who will help select pieces from the archive to feature in a virtual festival in Fall 2020. For those who do not have access to video recording equipment, the Playhouse is able to offer the use of the Mainstage and video recording support. If you are interested in recording on the Mainstage, please email [email protected].
