Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred
Apr 20 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Sigal Music Museum
Sigal Music Museum’s current special exhibition, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred, highlights items from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, which hails from all over the world. Showing November 2023 – May 2024, Worlds Apart uses a diverse range of historical instruments, objects, and visuals to bring together musical narratives from seemingly disparate parts of the globe.

Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred aims to increase public access to historical instruments from around the world and improve visitors’ understanding of musical traditions at the global level. Expanding beyond the typical parameters of the Western musical canon, Worlds Apart seeks to expose audiences to musical instruments and customs that are often overlooked or exotified. The instruments and other exhibit materials will offer visitors new perspectives on global music and a chance to consider how music is used for prayer and leisure in cultures around the world. By celebrating these stories, the museum intends to further its mission to collect and preserve historical musical instruments, objects, and information, which engage and enrich people of all ages through exhibits, performances, and experiential programs.

Displaying various objects from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred focuses on international musical instruments and cultures, celebrating rites and traditions with ancient histories and contemporary legacies. Frank Edwinn, a successful basso in the mid-20th century, studied and toured internationally, eventually settling in North Carolina, where he taught music at the University of North Carolina Asheville. Throughout his life, he purchased various objects from around the world, aiming to expose students, and himself, to the wide and wonderful world of musical instruments. This impressive collection occupies a unique position for educating audiences unfamiliar with the vast scope of global music.

And, UNCA’s Ramsey Library Special Collections is now processing the Edwinn’s papers and a few recordings that will be accessible next semester!

The Asheville Dulcimer Orchestra w/ Guitar Duo Mark and Beverly Davis
Apr 20 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Enka-Candler Library

The Enka-Candler Library welcomes The Asheville Dulcimer Orchestra and Guitar Duo, Mark and Beverly Davis in our community room for a performance on Saturday, April 20 at 3 PM.

Seats are first come first serve and doors will open around 2:30. This is an unticketed and free program. Capacity will be limited and the doors will close when seats are full. No entry after seats are filled.

The program will include sets from the ADO, from the guitar duo, and an en masse set of all musicians.  The joint set will include “Da Blues,” composed by Winston-Salem’s Alan Hirsch and presented here in an arrangement specifically for these instruments.

Since 2001 the classical guitar duo of Mark and Beverly Davis have performed around their native New England as well as in many international festivals across Europe.  With their two classical guitars (and the occasional mandolin), the duo performs an original blend of music informed by early folk traditions, baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary idioms, chosen for the qualities of musical interest and emotional depth; their over-all focus is on the beauty of sound and the expressive capabilities of plucked strings.

The Asheville Dulcimer Orchestra is a community-based, nonprofessional, all-volunteer group that has been playing together since 2019.  We are committed to honoring the history and music of the dulcimer, and participate in the dulcimer’s growth from a simple, solo 3 string instrument to multipart orchestra arrangements for today’s family of dulcimers.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Enka-Candler Library.

The name of the ensemble il pomo d’oro refers to Antonio Cesti’s opera from the year 1666. Composed to the wedding celebrations of Emperor Leopold I and Margarita Teresa of Spain, Il Pomo d’Oro was probably one of the largest, most expensive and most spectacular opera productions in the still young history of the genre. 24 different stage designs, a horse-ballet of 300 horses, a fireworks display of 73,000 rockets, numerous ‚special effects’- superlatives, which should make the Emperor’s court the highlight of cultural splendor in Europe.

LISSIE WITH THE WANDERING HEARTS
Apr 20 @ 8:00 pm
Salvage Station

Midwestern artist Lissie is a multi-talented tour de force who will release her new Americana-tinged indie folk album “Carving Canyons” on September 16. Ahead of the release she has unveiled the first song two songs “Flowers” and “Night Moves”. Debuted by FLOOD Magazine, the haunting sun-soaked song Night Moves channels Fleetwood Mac grandeur as it explores sensory memory and considering multiple realities vs one’s own point of view when navigating heartbreak.

“Carving Canyons” is about looking within while dealing with the uncertainty of the future—finding hope in personal and worldly adversity, no matter what the forecast might say. Inspired by her incredible intergenerational female friend group and the nature that surrounded her, Lissie traveled to Nashville and co-wrote much of the album with a majority of female-identifying songwriters—including Bre Kennedy, Madi Diaz, Morgan Nagler, Natalie Hemby, Kate York, and Sarah Buxton—who also contribute additional vocals throughout the album.

“Carving Canyons” is Lissie’s first full-length album since her UK Top 10 album “Castles” in 2018. In 2010, her 1st full length album “Catching A Tiger” unassumingly established Lissie as a global voice. Lissie has recently appeared in TV shows Twin Peaks and Loudermilk as well as co-owns the music genre themed popcorn company Otts Pops Indie Pop and is involved with land conservation.

ABOUT THE WANDERING HEARTS:

The Wandering Hearts achieved their second consecutive #1 on the UK official Americana Chart as they built on the breakthrough success of their Wild Silence debut with 2021’s self-titled second album, recorded between Woodstock and Omaha with producers Simone Felice, David Baron and Mike Mogis.

Arriving to a second wave of critical acclaim and again championed by Bob Harris at BBC Radio 2 (who previously awarded them his Breakthrough Artist at the UK Americana Awards), the album cemented the trio’s reputation as one of the leading lights in British Folk-Americana  – as underlined by their further nomination for Album Of The Year at the UK Americana Awards 2022, alongside Yola and The Staves.

The only British act to debut at both the iconic Ryman Theatre and The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in the same week, The Wandering Hearts have shared stages and tours across the UK and US with artists such as the late greats Tom Petty, John Prine and Justin Townes Earle, and Margo Price, Lukas Nelson, Robert Plant and Eagles.

Signed to Chrysalis Records for their third album, the band have had a busy 2023 with stand out performances at SXSW in Austin, Black Deer Festival, and a forthcoming Americanafest show in Nashville, as well as extensively supporting and performing on stage alongside Jack Savoretti on his summer tour.

The release of their EP ‘Hesperus’ in May, followed by their addition of ‘Voices’ to the much lauded Nick Drake anthology ‘The Endless Coloured Ways’ in July (alongside Bombay Bicycle Club, Feist, Aurora, Emile Sande, Self Esteem and more), all hint at a flavour of their forthcoming album (due 2024). The new material puts sharp focus on their world-renowned three-part harmonies to explore their Folk-Rock influences, blending flavours that bring to mind Simon & Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac and contemporaries like Milk Carton Kids and First Aid Kit.

SATSANG

I just want to write and perform songs that touch the heart and help others”. Letting go of genre, expectation, and boxes, Satsang has leaned into the power of songwriting to drive their forthcoming release, Flowers From The Fray (the band’s 5th album in 6 years) due out Fall 2022.

Recorded and self-produced with the help of bandmate and longtime collaborator Parker Brown, this record finds the duo tucked away in a secluded cabin in Southwest Montana digging back into the foundation on which Satsang was founded on. These songs were all so personal to me” says Drew McManus. “Whether it was really sifting through the stage of life I had found myself in which was a kind of dark night of the soul, or leaning into the love of my wife. This record is truly me bearing my heart. I needed to seclude myself to find out where these songs wanted to go, and having Parker’s musical guidance had a big hand in that.”

This record, coupled with the band’s last release All. Right. Now. is a maturing. A growing into the songwriter and musicians that the band was destined to be. A settled and firm foundation of influences and sound that brings every external aspect in and finds it internalized and distilled into Flowers From the Fray”.

Whether he’s playing alongside Trevor Hall and the Great In Between, performing his solo show, fronting his band, or jamming with the many artists he’s shared the stage with had the pleasure of sharing the stage with, Tim Snider’s passion for music always shines through. He brings his unique style and energy to the stage and has captivated the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide.

Music runs deep for Tim, spanning back generations. His great-grandfather was a doctoral graduate violinist and composer from Harvard. His great-grandmother was an opera singer and his grandmother—a passionate violinist as well—prophesied that he would be the family’s next violinist while holding him on her deathbed when he was two months old.  An Itzhak Perlman performance on Sesame Street became his earliest musical inspiration—at just three-and-a-half—and classical music first provided the impetus to learn his instrument. Over the years other influences have come into play: from exposure to the raw energy of rock music he picked up guitar, watching a Ben Harper concert turned him onto songwriting, and sojourns in Spain and Cuba introduced flamenco, salsa, and Afro-Cuban rhythms into his repertoire. Embracing these diverse influences, Tim’s musical odyssey took him to uncharted territories. Returning to college, he spent a year studying jazz and eventually rediscovered his love of classical music.

With a career now spanning international borders, music has led Tim to tour throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and the United States.  He has written and recorded countless string arrangements for artists across the globe including hip-hop Icon Talib Kweli, Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush, Kairo, Baby Fisher, Justine Sky, Hire, Satsang, and many more.

Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred
Apr 21 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
