In this class designed for beginners to intermediate performers, students will develop and hone their acting techniques. They’ll work on short scenes, monologues and play drama games that teach key skills in a fun and approachable way. This class gives students the confidence to shine on stage and off – even in their next audition or school play! Students will perform a showcase for family and friends during the last class.
Registration begins on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 10:00 am. Tuition will be $225 – Scholarships are available.

Plans for a proposed Woodfin Greenway are moving forward, and Buncombe County invites you to attend a community engagement session on the project. The greenway would be along NC 251/Riverside Drive from Broadway Street to Elk Mountain Road. At this point, the County is in the preliminary design phase and will look to start making easement acquisitions next year with construction slated to begin in 2024.
The overall goal of the Woodfin Greenway and Blueway project is to provide pedestrian paths between public recreation opportunities, schools, industries, and businesses along the French Broad River and Beaverdam Creek while preserving and celebrating the natural environment.
“The Woodfin Greenway is a key greenway section that adds five miles of greenway connectivity along the French Broad River from the northern city limit of Asheville into Woodfin that will ultimately connect to the Madison county line,” explains Recreation Services Director Allison Dains. “This section of the greenway will ultimately allow for the connection to and from the River Art District of Asheville to Woodfin. Situated along the French Broad River, this greenway will help preserve the land and have a positive impact on water quality.”
Eventually, the project would interlock with many other riverfront projects in the larger greenway corridor in Buncombe County. Specific activity centers that will be connected include: Silverline Park, Woodfin River Park, Craggy Mountain Rail Line, French Broad River Academy (boys and girls), Woodfin Elementary, Silverline Plastics, Mill at Woodfin, Zillicoah Beer Company, and Riverside Rhapsody.
At this time, we’d like to invite the public to attend a community engagement session. We will make a presentation on the proposed greenway plans, answer questions, and listen to your ideas regarding the greenway.

The East Asheville Welcome Table is an engaged and committed partner of ours who host and serve free weekly dinners.
The East Asheville Welcome Table is run by a group of volunteers who love interacting with their community. In the past 6 months, The East Asheville Welcome Table has distributed 3,623 pounds of food, while serving an average of 500 meals each month.
East Asheville Welcome Table’s weekly meals include live music performed by community members, games of cards, and knitting.
The Welcome Table’s dedication to creating a food secure community, however, goes beyond their walls. At the beginning of the pandemic, Welcome Table volunteers leapt into action and served meals to folks staying at the Ramada Inn.
We are thankful to have such a remarkable partner like East Asheville Welcome Table, who consistently do all they can to ensure their neighbors have access to food with dignity. If you or anyone you know lives near East Asheville and could benefit from a free dinner, be sure to stop by the East Asheville Welcome Table from 5:00-6:30 PM on Thursdays.
Are you looking for a way to develop your Spanish language skills or a way to keep your skills fresh? Join this friendly and welcoming Spanish Language Practice Group organized by Pack Library. Newcomers are always welcome on the first Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. This group meets online and is focused on providing an intermediate level, immersive discussion experience. Off The Yoga Mat follows three characters approaching 40 on a rollicking journey of love, transformation, and jealousy as Y2K approaches. Nate, a graduate student researching jealousy in Darwin and Shakespeare, denies he ever experiences that emotion. In shielding himself from disappointment, he almost misses out on a scintillating romance. After she breaks up with Nate, Nora, fueled by the desire to have a baby, takes a temporary job at Nokia in Finland. She sweats in the sauna, tries on men like miniskirts, and embraces the Finnish concept of sisu: perseverance despite setbacks.
Nate’s yoga teacher, Lulu, yearns to get to the bottom of her nightmares of childhood abuse. An experiment concocted by Nate’s friends to test his ability to withstand jealousy pushes him into a steamy tryst with Lulu. While she aids her ailing mother in New Orleans, Lulu meets a woman who helps her confront her violent past. After they become lovers, Nate (jealous this time) reconnects with Nora at a wedding. Their boozy nostalgic reunion complicates everything.
Cheryl J. Fish is a poet, fiction writer and environmental humanities scholar. Her recent books of poetry include Crater & Tower, on trauma and ecology after the Mount St. Helens volcanic eruption and the terrorist attack of 9/11/01, and The Sauna Is Full Of Maids, poems and photographs celebrating Finnish sauna culture, the natural world, and friendships. She has been a Fulbright Professor and she teaches at City University of New York.
Christy Alexander Hallberg is the author of the award-winning novel Searching for Jimmy Page (Livingston Press, 2021) and host of Rock is Lit: A Podcast About Rock Novels, from Pantheon Podcast Network. She is a Teaching Professor of English at East Carolina University, where she earned her BS and MA in English. She received her MFA in Creative Writing (Fiction) from Goddard College. She is Senior Associate Editor of North Carolina Literary Review. Her short fiction, creative nonfiction, book reviews, and interviews have appeared in such journals as North Carolina Literary Review, The Main Street Rag, Fiction Southeast, Riggwelter, Deep South Magazine, Eclectica, Litro, STORGY, Entropy, storySouth, Still: The Journal, and Concho River Review. Her creative nonfiction essay “The Ballad of Evermore” was a finalist for the Sequestrum 2020 Editor’s Reprint Award. Her flash story “Aperture” was chosen Story of the Month by Fiction Southeast for October 2020. The editors of the Best Small Fictions anthology series chose it for inclusion in their 2021 issue. Join Dahlia Lithwick, author of Lady Justice: Women, the Law, and the Battle to Save America and novelist and scholar Siri Hustvedt. This event is hosted by Books and Books, Writers for Democratic Action and Book the Vote.
After the sudden shock of Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton in 2016, many Americans felt lost and uncertain. It was clear he and his administration were going to pursue a series of retrograde, devastating policies. What could be done?
Immediately, women lawyers all around the country, independently of each other, sprang into action, and they had a common goal: they weren’t going to stand by in the face of injustice, while Trump, Mitch McConnell, and the Republican party did everything in their power to remake the judiciary in their own conservative image. Over the next four years, the women worked tirelessly to hold the line against the most chaotic and malign presidency in living memory. There was Sally Yates, the acting attorney general of the United States, who refused to sign off on the Muslim travel ban. And Becca Heller, the founder of a refugee assistance program who brought the fight over the travel ban to the airports. And Roberta Kaplan, the famed commercial litigator, who sued the neo-Nazis in Charlottesville. And, of course, Stacey Abrams, whose efforts to protect the voting rights of millions of Georgians may well have been what won the Senate for the Democrats in 2020. These are just a handful of the stories Lithwick dramatizes in thrilling detail to tell a brand-new and deeply inspiring account of the Trump years. With unparalleled access to her subjects, she has written a luminous book, not about the villains of the Trump years, but about the heroes. Dahlia Lithwick is the senior legal correspondent at Slate and host of Amicus, Slate’s award-winning biweekly podcast about the law. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, Harper’s, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, The New Republic, and Commentary, among other places. Lithwick won a 2013 National Magazine Award for her columns on the Affordable Care Act. She was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in October, 2018.
Siri Hustvedt is a novelist and scholar, has a PhD in English literature, and is a lecturer in psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. She is the author of a book of poems, seven novels, four collections of essays, and two works of nonfiction, most recently, Mothers, Fathers, and Others: Essays (Simon & Schuster, 2022). She has published papers in various academic and scientific journals and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, the European Charles Veillon Essay Prize, an American Academy of the Arts and Letters Award in Literature, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction for The Blazing World, which was also longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Rakish, comprised of world-class fiddler Maura Shawn Scanlin and folk guitarist Conor Hearn, performs an integrated mix of Celtic fiddle tunes, original compositions, and baroque music. From the traditional Irish tune Rakish Paddy, the name aptly suits the duo and their shared background in traditional Irish and Scottish music. “Rakish” itself suggests something strikingly unconventional in its appearance, and the two knowingly embrace this wealth of connotation in their music, drawing on the music they grew up with and performing it with their own slant.

The Myers Haunted House a self guided, old school haunt featuring Hollywood horror film characters Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface & more. The haunt is located in East Flat Rock, NC.

Tax Collections is heading into our busiest time of the year. Hate waiting in line? Don’t want to brave the impending cold weather? If so, it’s probably best to go ahead and pay your Buncombe County property taxes. Tax bills become delinquent after Jan. 5, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of the multiple ways to pay other than waiting in line at the Tax Department.
Avoid interest on your bill
Please be aware, state law mandates that interest will be added to your bill if it is not paid in full and payment is not postmarked or received by Jan. 5. If you cut it close to that date, your mail drop or carrier might not get you the Jan. 5 postmark, or your bank might not clear your online banking payment to us by Jan. 5. Help avoid that situation by planning ahead and using one of the below payment options well before the Jan. 5 deadline.

1) Pay by mail
Use the convenient self-addressed envelope included in your bill, or mail your check or money order to:

Please do not send cash via mail. Remember that payments must be received or postmarked by Jan. 5, 2022, to avoid a 2% interest fee. Payments mailed to the incorrect address may not be received and interest may accrue.
* If you have misplaced your tax bill or need a receipt, they can be printed online by visiting tax.buncombecounty.org.
2) Make an electronic payment online
You can use the online bill pay found at buncombecounty.org/paytaxes. This is the best way to avoid long lines as you can pay from home, a local library, or anywhere else you have a secure internet connection. No fees are added for electronic check payments, fees are added for credit/debit card transactions.
3) Use a drop box
Place your check or money order in one of our drop boxes:
- In front of the Family Justice Center at 35 Woodfin St., in downtown Asheville
- At the main entrance of the Tax Department at 94 Coxe Ave., in downtown Asheville
4) Pay by credit card over the phone
Have your bill handy and call 1-877-690-3729 (enter jurisdiction code 4301 and follow the instructions).
Note: when you pay by a credit card over the phone, there is a convenience fee of $3.95 for a Visa Debit payment, or a 2.35% fee with a credit or non-Visa debit card payment. There is no fee associated with an electronic check.
Still want to pay in person?
We understand that some people will still want to come in to see us, and there are a couple of reminders we want to share. Please visit before mid-December to avoid significant wait times. We have made changes to our lobby to accommodate for social distancing, but that means fewer people can wait inside. In-person payment lines are expected to stretch outside the building as we approach the last day to pay before interest is applied.
Winter weather is unpredictable in Buncombe County and as we approach December, weather closures may affect your ability to pay your taxes in person. Your tax bill will become delinquent after Jan. 5, and interest added to a bill, due to late payment, cannot be waived due to inclement weather.
Holiday schedule
The Tax Collections office will be closed for the holidays on Dec. 23-27 and on Monday, Jan. 2.

The selection panel reviewed a lot of incredible submissions, but the projects listed below rose to the top. With the removal of the Vance Monument, and the start of the Pack Square Plaza Visioning and Improvements project, the Plaza will soon enter into a new era. Art in the Heart is a way to unite, heal, and strengthen the community. Installations, artwork, and performances over the next 6 months will help spark important conversations on how to make this public space a place that reflects Asheville’s diverse community and history.
The Artist Support Grant provides funding emerging or established artists to create work, improve their business operations, or bring their work to new audiences. Grants range from $500-3,000.
