Recognizing and understanding racism, and actively unlearning the everyday, built-in mechanisms of systemic racism is an ongoing effort that must be made by every single one of us. It can be difficult to navigate issues, origins, and solutions surrounding systemic racism, especially with so many different angles portrayed by the media.
There are countless truthful resources to help us find our way to social justice and equity. Here are just a few educational resources and ways to help our Black communities:

Live Stream: Ilona Andrews in conversation with Jeaniene Frost

Online
Emerald Blaze: A Hidden Legacy Novel Cover Image

The event is free but an RSVP is required. Please click here to RSVP for this event! If you elect to attend, we will email you prior to the event with the link required to attend.

We’re excited to host this conversation with Ilona Andrews and Jeaniene Frost, moderated by Megan Corbett of Frolic Media!

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

They have co-authored several bestselling series, including the #1 NYT bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, rustic fantasy of the Edge, paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and Innkeeper Chronicles, which they post as a free weekly serial. For complete list of their books, fun extras, and Innkeeper installments, please visit their website at Ilona-andrews.com.

Ilona Andrews, #1 New York Times bestselling author, continues her spellbinding series set in the Hidden Legacy world where magic controls everything…except the hearts of those who wield it.

Tour Flat Rock Playhouse’s Garden
Aug 29 all-day
Flat Rock Playhouse

Despite the cancellation of the Flat Rock Playhouse’s 2020 season due to COVID-19, folks are being encouraged to take time to enjoy the lush gardens on the grounds of the historic campus.

With a QR code reader on any smartphone, garden visitors can tap into information about the individual plants wherever they’re standing. The codes direct the phone to webpages on a Muddy Sneakers site that the garden volunteers control.

The Master Gardners have been hard at work adding some tech to our gardens! QR codes can now be found on the 62 garden beds that make up the Playhouse gardens. Visitors can use their smartphones to learn more about the plants they are seeing. Congratulations and thank you to Tamsin Allpress and all of our gardening volunteers who work to keep our gardens beautiful! Photo by volunteer Mary Smit

AVL Lesbian + Bisexual Women in Their 30s/40s Book Club
Aug 29 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Online

The first book we’re reading is Amanda’s pic Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal by Jeanette Winterson.

Total transparency – I have never run a book club or been part of one so aside from watching Oprah back in the day, I got nothing in terms of process. Maybe we pick apart a theme(s) of the book and go from there? Open to suggestions

And if you show up without having read the book, you will be made to walk the streets of Asheville like Cersei Lannister as we yell “Shame! Shame!” at you. (YouTube it if you have no idea what I’m talking about) :)
