Amazing Glaze with Gabriel Kline

Do you hate glazing? I mean, do you really HATE glazing? Have you experienced the frustration of making a beautiful piece, then ruining it with a flawed, or perhaps worse, boring glaze? Would you rather spend your time doing just about ANYTHING else, even cleaning your studio? Then this is the class for you! Join Gabriel each Friday as he demystifies the techniques that will help you learn to love the glazing process, achieve more dynamic results, and get your work noticed. Topics will include under and overglaze decoration, glazing large and delicate work, spraying glazes, and multiple firings. We will also examine the basics of formulating, mixing, or altering a glaze.
Level: Seasoned Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced
Tuition: $255 + $35 Lab Fee
Looking for something fun and creative to do after school? In this 5-week class, kids will learn how to center clay on the potter’s wheel, pull up the walls and form a variety of shapes including bowls, cups and plates. A little hand building will be involved as we embellish our pottery with handles and decoration. At the end we will paint and glaze all of our creations making them food safe and durable. Class includes one on one instruction and the room to grow and experiment with clay. Tuition is $225.
Introduction To Modeling The Human Figure with Leonid Siveriver
Thursdays, 6-9pm
August 30- October 4
You’ve asked for it, and this session we are pleased to announce that a live model, figurative sculpture class will be returning to Odyssey ClayWorks! Working from a live model each week, students will hone their understanding of basic anatomy, proportions and the mechanics of movement in 3 dimensions. After first creating multiple fast sketches in clay to work out technique, students will then advance to a longer-term sculpture based on a single pose, with more attention to detail. Please join us for this exciting opportunity to work with decorated sculptor, Leonid Siveriver.

Plates and Mugs: Focusing On Surface and Form With Laurie Caffery Harris
Tuesdays, 6:30-9pm
August 28- October 2
These two popular forms offer endless possibilities of expression to the clay artist. In this intermediate level class, we will use the potter’s wheel to create our forms, then focus on creating a unique surface that reflects your individuality. Through demonstrations and practice on our own test tiles, we will cover surface design including mishima (slip inlay), painting, and sgraffito carving. There will also be a heavy emphasis on handle making, as we seek to create forms that are both beautiful, and easy to use.
Level: Intermediate and Advanced
Tuition: $255 + $35 Lab Fee
This exhibit showcases the work of three leading fiber artists who explore Western North Carolina’s mountains, meadows and marshes using fabrics and fibers. Their quilted wall art offers a link to familiar images of this region, echoing the Arboretum’s role of connecting people with plants. Through their diverse styles, construction methods and subject matter, artists Mary Stori, Judy Simmons and Kate Weston add a contemporary twist to the area’s rich and storied quilt-making tradition. Their exhibit features pieces of varying sizes, from large focal-point wall hangings to medium-sized wall art to small work suitable for tabletop display. All pieces are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The North Carolina Arboretum Society.
About the Artists
Mary Stori
From her home in Clyde, N.C., Mary creates botanical and organic themed art quilts using artisian-made, hand-dyed cotton, linen, silk and rayon fabrics. She also utilizes hand-felted and hand-dyed wool as rich backdrops, offering texture and depth to her work. Bead embellishment is another one of her trademarks. Learn more on her website.
Judy Simmons
Judy creates her own fabric in her Fletcher, N.C. studio using surface design techniques, including fabric marbling, dyeing, color lifting and silk screening. Much of the imagery in her work utilizes her own photography printed on fabric. To learn more about Judy, please click here.
Kate Weston
From her home in Statesville, N.C., Kate focuses on the creation of complex cloth through the application of dye, paint and embellishment, such as fabric overlay or manipulation and the application of non-fiber materials. Have you ever wanted to scale up the size of your work, but weren’t sure how? The sky is the limit in this class, so let’s go big! Join Mac McCusker as you learn to make large, freestanding floor vases with slabs and coils. You can then theme your piece by adding imagery to the leather hard clay. Demonstrations will include experimenting with carving, additive methods, surface design, sgraffito, underglazes, and the use of decals to achieve a visually stunning finished piece. All skill levels are welcome.

There will be three immersive two-day workshops:
1. Mushrooms, Molds, and Mycorrhizae, taught by Tradd Cotter
Mushrooms offer us nearly infinite possibilities for innovation, including high-quality food and alcohol production, water filtration, antibiotic development, invasive management, myco-pesticides, pollution and toxin remediation, and more. Whether you’re engaged on a home-, garden-, or farm-scale, beginners and advanced students alike will walk away with the knowledge and skills needed to accomplish a range of personal or professional goals. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend both days. The workshop builds on itself and all of these components work in harmony to create optimal understanding of the power of the fungi community.
2. The Sustainable Poultry Flock, taught by Jim Adkins
The workshop will include a lecture, hands-on experience, and a farm tour. The hands-on components will happen on Saturday and will include a breeding analysis and a slaughter and butcher demo. Students will receive a training manual filled with resources, including budget overviews, facility plans, pasture-growing strategies, feeding instructions, and proper feed recipes.
3. Tending Your Inner Garden, taught by Monica Corrado
True health begins and ends in the gut. In fact, there is mounting evidence that chronic illnesses such as cancer, depression, allergies, and autism spectrum disorder find their origin in the digestive system. The gut—which acts as a “second brain”—functions independently of the actual brain and plays a huge role in whether we struggle or thrive. In this accessible and non-clinical workshop, Monica Corrado—teaching chef, holistic nutritionist, and certified GAPS™ practitioner—will uncover the secrets of a traditional whole-foods diet and nutrient-dense cooking through simple, do-it-yourself techniques that address health issues holistically. This high-energy workshop is comprised of a lecture, cooking demos, tastings, and handouts that will help you will learn how to heal your gut. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend both days. The workshop builds on itself, and all of these components work in synergy with each other to create optimal healing.

2. The Sustainable Poultry Flock, taught by Jim Adkins
The workshop will include a lecture, hands-on experience, and a farm tour. The hands-on components will happen on Saturday and will include a breeding analysis and a slaughter and butcher demo. Students will receive a training manual filled with resources, including budget overviews, facility plans, pasture-growing strategies, feeding instructions, and proper feed recipes.
3. Tending Your Inner Garden, taught by Monica Corrado
True health begins and ends in the gut. In fact, there is mounting evidence that chronic illnesses such as cancer, depression, allergies, and autism spectrum disorder find their origin in the digestive system. The gut—which acts as a “second brain”—functions independently of the actual brain and plays a huge role in whether we struggle or thrive. In this accessible and non-clinical workshop, Monica Corrado—teaching chef, holistic nutritionist, and certified GAPS™ practitioner—will uncover the secrets of a traditional whole-foods diet and nutrient-dense cooking through simple, do-it-yourself techniques that address health issues holistically. This high-energy workshop is comprised of a lecture, cooking demos, tastings, and handouts that will help you will learn how to heal your gut. Grandfather Mountain’s inaugural Junior Ranger Day will celebrate the park’s Junior Ranger program and its esteemed participants. Geared for ages 5-12, the Junior Ranger program offers young explorers a unique, hands-on experience at Grandfather Mountain, including a scavenger hunt, trail exploration, plant and animal identification and more!
On Junior Ranger Day, simply check in at the Nature Museum to receive a Junior Ranger booklet, participate in the programs (held every half-hour at the Let-It-Rain Picnic Shelter), complete the booklet’s assignments and earn your badge! You’ve asked for it, and this session we are pleased to announce that a live model, figurative sculpture class will be returning to Odyssey ClayWorks! Working from a live model each week, students will hone their understanding of basic anatomy, proportions and the mechanics of movement in 3 dimensions. After first creating multiple fast sketches in clay to work out technique, students will then advance to a longer-term sculpture based on a single pose, with more attention to detail. Plates and Mugs: Focusing On Surface and Form With Laurie Caffery Harris

These two popular forms offer endless possibilities of expression to the clay artist. In this intermediate level class, we will use the potter’s wheel to create our forms, then focus on creating a unique surface that reflects your individuality. Through demonstrations and practice on our own test tiles, we will cover surface design including mishima (slip inlay), painting, and sgraffito carving. There will also be a heavy emphasis on handle making, as we seek to create forms that are both beautiful, and easy to use.

This exhibit showcases the work of three leading fiber artists who explore Western North Carolina’s mountains, meadows and marshes using fabrics and fibers. Their quilted wall art offers a link to familiar images of this region, echoing the Arboretum’s role of connecting people with plants. Through their diverse styles, construction methods and subject matter, artists Mary Stori, Judy Simmons and Kate Weston add a contemporary twist to the area’s rich and storied quilt-making tradition. Their exhibit features pieces of varying sizes, from large focal-point wall hangings to medium-sized wall art to small work suitable for tabletop display. All pieces are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The North Carolina Arboretum Society.

Mary Stori
From her home in Clyde, N.C., Mary creates botanical and organic themed art quilts using artisian-made, hand-dyed cotton, linen, silk and rayon fabrics. She also utilizes hand-felted and hand-dyed wool as rich backdrops, offering texture and depth to her work. Bead embellishment is another one of her trademarks. Learn more on her website.
Judy Simmons
Judy creates her own fabric in her Fletcher, N.C. studio using surface design techniques, including fabric marbling, dyeing, color lifting and silk screening. Much of the imagery in her work utilizes her own photography printed on fabric. To learn more about Judy, please click here.
Kate Weston
From her home in Statesville, N.C., Kate focuses on the creation of complex cloth through the application of dye, paint and embellishment, such as fabric overlay or manipulation and the application of non-fiber materials.
