 The 13th annual Asheville Mardi Gras parade will take place on February 23 in South Slope and we’re looking for parade day volunteers. The Asheville Mardi Gras parade is an all-inclusive, family friendly, full-color spectacle that is fun, entertaining, full of music, floats, dancing and celebrating. Spectators receive beads and candy and the photo opportunities are always amazing.
Details include: * About 20-25 volunteers needed for this rain or shine event.
*Setting up, manning and breaking down street barricades
*Assisting with krewe and float line up and timing as the parade begins
*Identifying parked cars that might need to be towed and checking for obstacles to smooth crowd control along the parade route.
*Coordinating with the Parade Logistics manager and city police
*Carrying 1 or 2 parade banners (Costumes optional but always encouraged!)
*Assisting with end of parade float disbursement
*Trash pick up following the parade set up and marching route. This is mostly paper trash and beads. It’s rarely more than a few bags total.
*Returning barricades, cones, etc. to the post-parade collection point
Confirmed Volunteer perks include $10 gift card to Vortex Donuts & Coffee and a free beer at Catawba. Possibly more perks to come!

Flamenco Vivo / Carlota Santana — Friday & Saturday, February 14 & 15, 2020, 8 p.m. Hailed as “the Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine, internationally renowned artist and educator Carlota Santana has made it her mission to promote flamenco as a living art form — a vital part of Spanish culture. Serving more than 40,000 people nationwide each year, Flamenco Vivo entertains, educates and empowers through the arts. Friday & Saturday, Feb. 14 & 15, 2020 at 8 p.m. at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts.
Engage with Flamenco Vivo in a special Valentine’s Day pre-show V.I.P. tableau performance, featuring a special drink and hors d’oeuvres package at the Henry LaBrun Studio. On Saturday, Feb. 15, join the company once more in the Henry LaBrun Studio for a community dance master class, open to all ages and skill levels.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a pre-show V.I.P. tablao performance featuring a special drink and hors d’oeuvres package, Feb. 14. at 6pm. Space is limited. Henry LaBrun Studio.
Community Dance Master Class
Open to the general public – all ages and skills. Feb. 15 at 1pm. Henry LaBrun Studio.
This public master class will increase the participant’s awareness and understanding of flamenco dance and its cultural heritage. The class is 75 minutes and includes a brief history of the origins of flamenco dance, music and song and how the various cultures that inhabited Spain have influenced flamenco.
This is a hands-on workshop with instruction in rhythmic handclaps (palmas), arm movements (braceo), body posturing (marcaje), and footwork (taconeo). The class is supportive and fun, and flamenco technique is woven into a short choreography. By the end of the class, participants will be able to perform a simple choreographed dance.

AMG is also seeking a Parade Day Logistics Manager as a PAID POSITION for Sunday, Feb. 23. Ideal person should have outdoor event coordination experience, flexibility and a good sense of humor. Duties include coordinating volunteers, ensuring cones and barricades are in place at all check points, answering any traffic/parked car/pedestrian concerns, acting as parade day primary contact for police and security and Mardi Gras leadership, coordinating compliance with City parade permit requirements, and helping ensure a timely start and finish to the parade. Candidate could plan to cover the parade route via bicycle or scooter or use walkie talkies to accomplish oversight of the .5 mile parade route. This position pays $125 for the day. Finally, on Saturday November 30th after Thanksgiving, we’re excited that it’s Kid Hop time again! Kid Hop Hooray (our awesome indoor family dance party that happens monthly all winter long) is back. This event is for kids of all ages, with family-appropriate music from DJ Oso! Drop in anytime – it goes from 10am til 1pm. There will be FREE Glow accessories for little dancers while they last, plenty of room to run, dance, and get their sillies out while it’s cold outside, and snacks for purchase from Asheville Pizza Co and the Hop Ice Creamery, as well as popcorn and juice boxes! And of course, The Orange Peel bar will be open for mom and dad’s refreshments.

Buncombe County and Asheville first responders are facing off for a lifesaving cause. Local heroes are rolling up their sleeves – and encouraging the community to do the same – as they vie for the most pints donated at the Annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive. Congratulations to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office for once again taking the award home last year.
All donors that day will receive a special T-shirt. Help save a life, and show your support for our local unsung heroes, your emergency first responders.

We are in URGENT need of two assistant coaches at Hominy Valley Elementary on one or both program days (greater need on Wednesdays). The team practices on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:15 pm to 3:45 pm.
With your support, 15 girls will grow their confidence, learn to stand up for themselves and others, and realize their voices matter. You don’t even need to like running!

This gathering will be open to 50 participants and will feature a Sonic Moving Meditation. Nancy Jurek will take people on a journey that will include meditation, movement, and relaxation. River Guerguerian will be providing a live soundtrack using an array of global percussion instruments.
The meditation will be preceded by a brief presentation about the
LivingPulse, and the gathering will conclude with a group discussion about the experience. After you register and before this free event occurs, we will email you a short paper describing a few of the ideas behind the LivingPulse organization, which may help prepare your mindset for the activity and succeeding discussion.
