Literacy Together (formerly the Literacy Council of Buncombe County) is a nonprofit organization working with children, youth, and adults to increase comprehensive literacy and English language skills through access to literacy resources and specialized instruction by trained volunteer tutors. Literacy Together relies on volunteer tutors to offer students personal instruction and high-quality materials through various programs.
The Youth Literacy Program is seeking tutors to meet with students K-5 twice a week for 50 minutes, between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm. The Youth Literacy Program works with two after-school programs that primarily serve youth of color. The two locations are in Asheville.
Youth Literacy tutors work with children from low-income families who read, write, and/or spell below their grade level. Tutors in this program complete an initial orientation and a 16-20 hours training, which includes some pre-course work and/or homework (short articles to read, short videos to watch). They then receive follow-up support and the option to attend in-service training throughout their tutoring commitment. Youth Literacy tutors commit to working with their students for at least one school year.
Time Commitment:
- Twice a week for 50-minute sessions between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm.
- Youth Literacy tutors commit to working with their students for at least one school year.
Requirements:
- GED or High School diploma
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work patiently with various levels of literacy skills
- Access to reliable internet
- Ability to navigate virtual meetings with minimal distractions
- Complete a background check
Training:
- Tutors must complete 16-20 hours of training prior to being assigned a student

Getting Back to the Basics/Project Lighten Up is a unique summer and afterschool educational opportunity for low-income and minority youth that supports students’ recreational and educational learning. We provide meaningful educational support and develop self-esteem in a positive environment through mentoring and enriching activities.
Project Lighten Up is seeking in-person volunteers to assist students attending the afterschool program during the school year with spelling and reading 1-2 times a week for 1 hour.
Time Commitment:
- Commitment to a 5-week session
- Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 1 shift per week
- Volunteers choose from one, 1-hour session per week OR two, 30-minute sessions per week
- Volunteer shifts are Tuesdays & Thursdays between 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
- Please arrive 15 minutes prior to shift start for health screening and transition time
Requirements/Training:

HART’s Main Stage

It’s 1955, and a small dreary town in the midwest is about to get all shook up when a hip swivelin,’ motorcycle ridin,’ guitar playin’ young man rides into town. This energetic musical features the music of the king himself, Elvis Presley, with hits like “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound dog,” “A Little Less Conversation,” “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” and many more! Loosely based on the plot of Twelfth Night, All Shook Up is full of mistaken identities, the magic of romance, and the power of Rock n’ Roll! With a book by Joe DiPietro, who brought you recent hits at HART such as Over the River and Through the Woods and The Last Romance, this musical will kick off our main stage season with all the nostalgia and cheese of your favorite Elvis Movies!
Suitable for all audiences.
Cook teams of 4-6 individuals are invited to bring ingredients and prepare meals onsite or bring meals that have been prepared elsewhere. To meet our dietary standards, we ask that each meal provides a meat, vegetable and starch.

ABCCM Transformation Village provides up to 100 beds of transitional housing and will provide emergency shelter beds, post Covid-19. Transforming lives is through four developmental phases called Steps to Success including stabilization, life skills, education and reintegration. We are honored to report that 8 out of 10 leave us with a living wage job and permanent housing.
Transformation Village gives hope, healing, health and a home to single women, mothers with children, and female Veterans experiencing homelessness. We provide residents a fresh start and a place to heal surrounded and supported by Christian love, trust, education and companionship.
We are seeking energetic volunteers to prepare and serve meals for our residents for lunch and dinner. This opportunity provides you with the chance to prepare meals in our commercial kitchen alongside our trained staff while serving the women and children of Transformation Village.

Newcomers are always welcome on the first Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. This group meets online and is focused on providing an intermediate level, immersive discussion experience. The FREE family concert invites families throughout Asheville to come together for a special
evening of empowerment and connection. The first 100 youth attending will receive a FREE 72-
page creative expression journal, EXPRESS IT!, empowerment wristband and stickers to
support mental wellness and encourage creative expression. Youth and their families are also
invited to create together on a collaborative art mural that will be displayed in Asheville post-
event. The EXPRESS IT! book was created by award-winning empowerment nonprofit,
Free2Luv, during Covid to support youth, teens, and young adults struggling with depression,
anxiety, and isolation. Free2Luv utilizes the arts to promote mental wellness, build self-esteem,
and empower youth to be their best selves.

Beginning in May and running through September, these free outdoor shows will ramp up downtown fun on the third Thursday of each month, complete with craft beverages, food trucks and kids’ activities. Each concert will take place at the south end of Main Street, closing off the blocks between Allen and Caswell streets.
As the premier live music event of Hendersonville, Rhythm & Brews brings in a variety of established acts as well as up-and-coming artists from around the nation. Whether you love soul, rock, bluegrass or the funky stuff, Rhythm & Brews will put a smile on your face and broaden your musical horizons.

All net proceeds from adult beverage sales will benefit the Friends of Downtown Hendersonville 501c3 nonprofit, whose mission is to identify, preserve and enhance the key factors that contribute to the authentic small town urban character of historic downtown Hendersonville. In the past year, the Friends of Downtown Hendersonville has supported downtown businesses with over $35,000 in direct business support through the façade and pivot grant programs.
New in 2021, R&B Super Fan Tent provides an enhanced experience with a shaded viewing area including beer, wine and light refreshments from Moe’s BBQ. Individuals can become R&B Super Fans by purchasing a season package sponsorship for $200. The package includes two sponsor tent tickets to each show and two R&B season t-shirts. At the eighth annual Sound Effects concert to benefit Asheville Music School on Thursday, May 19 from 6 – 10 PM at Salvage Station, Asheville musicians team up to perform The Beatles’ White Album. The Asheville Beatles Band, made up of an all-star cast of Asheville musicians, will perform songs from the fab four’s only double album, with classics like “Dear Prudence,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and the controversial “Helter Skelter.”
“‘The White Album’ was recorded during an interesting time for the group,” says AMS director Ryan Reardon. “A lot of the songs were written, and even recorded, without all of the members. So, you have a handful of intimate, solo acoustic type of songs, like ‘Blackbird’ and ‘Julia,’ along with some epic rock anthems. We plan to highlight and showcase this contrast in the live setting.”
AMS flagship student rock band Minør will be opening the show, along with Liminal Spaces led by Mar Perez-Albela. All proceeds from the event will benefit Asheville Music School’s operations, mission, and programs, particularly the school’s growing outreach and scholarship programs.

Reminiscent of Jesmyn Ward and Helen Oyeyemi, Ashleigh Bell Pedersen is a promising new voice in American fiction.
Ashleigh Bell Pedersen’s fiction has been featured in New Stories from the South, The Kenyon Review, The Iowa Review, Design Observer, The Silent History, A Strange Object, and the New York Public Library’s Library Simplified app. Her story “Small and Heavy World” was a finalist for both Best American Short Stories and a Pushcart Prize, and her story “Crocodile” won The Masters Review 2020 Flash Fiction Contest. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Pittsburgh, where she was the recipient of a teaching fellowship and Turow-Kinder Award. She currently resides in Brooklyn.
Leah Hampton is a graduate of the Michener Center for Writers and the winner of the University of Texas’s Keene Prize for Literature, as well as North Carolina’s James Hurst and Doris Betts prizes. Her work has appeared in storySouth, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, Appalachian Heritage, North Carolina Literary Review, the Los Angeles Times, Ecotone, Electric Literature, and elsewhere. A former college instructor, Hampton lives in and writes about the Blue Ridge Mountains.

In the absence of consent, exploitation is what remains. When documenting communities, particularly those who are marginalized, there is the potential to either support or exploit said communities by our intention and actions behind the camera. This 4-part class series will explore themes within Gillian Laub’s Southern Rites exhibition, examples of both exploitation and consent, and offer feedback & perspective to current documentary projects. Particular to this class are discussions about racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, transphobia and other discussions around intersections of identities.

- This class will be held via Zoom and requires participants to have a Zoom account and access to a computer with video/audio capabilities.
- This class series is intended for photographers of all levels, but some experience behind a camera is required.
- 2 seats for this class will be offered at $15 and priority will be given to BIPOC artists.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Jupiter “Jupe” Javeta is a Black, southern, queer, nonbinary person who resides in Albany, Georgia where they were born and raised. They are an artist, culture keeper, and community member who practices community healing through visual art, documentation, written work, and installations. Their visual work (photography and documentary short films) center reconciliation and reprieve for Black folks in the Deep South. Their written work centers grief as a ritual and rites process, and digs into the transformative potential of grieving. Their community work (events and arts spaces) focuses on marginalized communities and connecting people across those communities to places and spaces of rest, affirmation, and communion. In each modality, they are driven by a deep love for their people and a determination to reflect it back to the communities they come from.
ADULT STUDIO
The Museum’s studio program for adults offers a core curriculum in drawing, painting, printmaking, and three-dimensional media, and also explores the intersections between them. Local and visiting artists help students of all levels and abilities develop skills in media that reflect techniques and themes featured in the Museum’s Collection and special exhibitions. Classes meet for 3–12 weeks, and are designed for anyone interested in exploring specific media in depth; daylong workshops introduce new media or processes. | Little has been documented about the Jewish history of Western North Carolina, yet clues are all around us. Jews could be found in many towns including Brevard, Hendersonville, Statesville, Asheville, Rosman, Boone, Blowing Rock, Franklin, Sylva, Little Switzerland, Valle Crucis, Marion, Canton. Bryson City, Robbinsville, and Waynesville. Why did they come? What did they do? What is their lasting legacy? Join us for some answers.
This event is co-sponsored by Jewish Heritage North Carolina, the only statewide independent organization dedicated to collect, preserve and present the history of the Jewish people of our State. “To serve our mission we honor our history, celebrate our culture, and connect our communities.” About the Speaker: Sharon Fahrer is a recovered New Yorker with a background in geography and urban planning. She and her husband were drawn to Asheville by its wonderful historic neighborhoods. For 25 years they lived in an 1896 house they restored in Montford. In 2003 she co-founded History@Hand with Jan Schochet to reveal the history of Asheville’s Jewish businesses creating a book and an exhibit titled The Family Store a History of Jewish Businesses in Downtown Asheville from 1880-1990. Since then she has continued to research and produce history panels which are installed: along the French Broad River about Wilma Dykeman (not currently on display), downtown Asheville, bus shelters along Montford Avenue, on the campus of UNC Asheville, in the Osher Life Long Learning Institute, the ASheVille museum (no longer open), Asheville Museum of Science, Asheville Community Theater (ACT), Stephens-Lee Recreation Center, the Dry Ridge Museum in Weaverville, and the Sprinza Weizenblatt Gallery on the campus of Mars Hill University. She has also written two other books The Man Who Lived on Main Street about Sol Shulman of Sylva (coauthored with Jan Schochet) and A Home in Shalomville. the History of Asheville’s Jewish Community. The latter book received the 2016 Bob Terrill book award from the Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society. Sharon created the Jewish Museum without Walls highlighting locations which are part of Asheville’s Jewish history. In 2003 she started the Montford Music and Arts Festival. Currently she leads walking tours in downtown on architecture and history and also the Family Store, Montford, Riverside Cemetery and Biltmore Village in Asheville. Currently she is serving on the Buncombe County Remembrance Project research committee, the boards of Jewish Heritage North Carolina, Friends of Buncombe County Special Collections, and the Wilma Dykeman Legacy. Spring 2022 Amphitheater Series
An eclectic mix of music in TFAC’s popular Peterson Amphitheater awaits you this spring! From energetic folk to blends of country and rock, TFAC’s lineup of 90-minute, outdoor concerts will fill the air with music and have you singing & dancing.
Music’s elders and icons established the initial template for Rock ‘n’ Roll, but it’s the newer generation that keeps it thriving and moving forward. So credit the Kenny George Band for doing exactly that.
Comprised of Kenny George (lead guitar, vocals, songwriter), Randy Borawski (drums, harmony vocals), Center Ely (steel guitar) and Brooks Andrews (bass), this hardworking ensemble has earned their stripes the hard way. Performing an average of 150 to 180 shows per year throughout the heartland, they bring their music to the masses one gig at a time.
“Our goal has always been to connect with our audiences,” George insists. “Our music is honest and organic, and we deliberately avoid pretense. We may seem like a ragtag bunch, but there’s a passion, purpose and sincerity that underscores everything we do, and hopefully that’s apparent even the first time you hear us play.”
Hailing from Aiken, South Carolina, the Kenny George Band has created an indelible impression with fans throughout the Southeast and Midwest, playing 250 concerts in the last two years alone. They’ve traveled the highways and byways between North and South Carolina, Tennessee,Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Missouri, reconnecting with their fervent followers and picking up new fans along the way.
The concert begins at 6:30 PM. Food options and beverages will be available for purchase.
