Do you have a rising kindergartner and questions about what it means to be “ready for kindergarten”?
This drop-in event is intended to provide families with an opportunity to meet representatives from local schools and ask any questions pertaining to the registration process as well as specifics about each school. We encourage anyone with a rising kindergartener for the current academic year to attend and chat with friendly staff about your school options. Participants will have an opportunity to receive free resources and materials to support their children’s transition to kindergarten.
If you have a child who will be 4 by August 31, 2024, you may also attend to get information on eligibilty for Buncombe Pre-K options.

The Western North Carolina Scale Model Club is a non-profit group for static (non-RC) model builders to present their models and share tips and tricks in a laid back atmosphere. Bring your latest finished piece or your work in progress. All skill levels are welcome! Due to the fragile nature of these models this program is designed for ages 12 and up. |

About STOMP
STOMP is explosive, provocative, sophisticated, sexy, utterly unique and appeals to audiences of all ages. The international percussion sensation has garnered an armful of awards and rave reviews and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. The return of the percussive hit also brings some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured and the addition of two new full-scale routines, utilizing props like tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans. Carl Sandburg wrote countless words in an array of different genres, including poetry, children’s stories, journal articles, as well as a biography and autobiography! He wrote of love and nature, dreams and struggles. This year’s theme of “Memory” is echoed in much of his works. ““Under the summer roses, when the flagrant crimson, lurks in the dusk, Of the wild red leaves, Love, with little hands, comes and touches you with a thousand memories, and asks you beautiful, unanswerable questions.” Carl Sandburg
Poems submitted for the 2024 contest should reflect the theme of “Memory.” By definition, “the process or power of recallling something learned or experienced from the past” Note: Poems do NOT need to be titled Memory, as long as the poem itself relates to the theme.
Students are invited to submit a poem to Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site’s annual Student Poetry Contest. The contest encourages youth to explore writing their own poetry and is open to students nationwide!
- Submissions are accepted from grades 3-12 and must be submitted by email by Monday March 4, 2024. See below for submission rules.
- Winners will be notified by April 7, 2024, and will be invited to participate in a virtual celebration program on Sunday, April 28.

Beautifully handcrafted of natural elements, each sculptural postcard depicts a location or landmark Vanderbilt visited more than a century ago. This captivating complement to Biltmore’s Italian Renaissance Alive exhibition reveals Vanderbilt’s passions for travel, culture, architecture, and art as well as his personal experience of such renowned Italian cities as Milan, Florence, Venice, Pisa, and Vatican City.

Located within the wildly-popular and botanically beautiful Southern Appalachian Mountains, The North Carolina Arboretum offers more than 10 miles of hiking trails that connect to many other area attractions such as Lake Powhatan, the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Visitors of all ages and abilities can enjoy their hiking experience at the Arboretum as trail options include easy, moderate, and difficult challenge levels. All trails are dog-friendly and visitors are asked to adhere to the proper waste disposing procedures for pets.

This presentation is designed for adults and assumes no prior knowledge of pollinators. You’ll learn about pollination and pollinators overall, as well as the most common pollinators in Western North Carolina. These topics are followed by a discussion of conservation concerns and simple steps you can take to help pollinators. The session wraps up with the fascinating concept of pollination syndromes and how you can use them to participate in pollinator conservation. This presentation is brought to you by the Bee City – Asheville (BCA) Leadership Committee and is given by Athena Rayne Anderson, Ph.D., M.Ed. Athena earned her doctoral degree in 2012 from the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia. Her work focused on pollination ecology, especially of native bees. She loves making science accessible to the public and is founder and Chair of the BCA Presentations Subcommittee. This group is dedicated to ensuring monthly pollinator presentations in the Asheville area. Athena is also a Certified Pollinator Steward through the Pollinator Partnership. |
This winter and spring join us for an introduction to pollinators presented by Bee City USA Asheville. Pollinators are under threat, but there’s plenty we can do to help right in our backyards.

- The importance of pollinator habitat
The presenter for this program will be Athena Rayne Anderson who holds PhD in Ecology with a focus on native pollinators. Athena is also a Certified Pollinator Steward through the Pollinator Partnership and works with Bee City USA Asheville to promote the value of native pollinator plants.

These programs are free and everyone is invited.
Beginning & Intermediate youth music classes on traditional and ol’ time instruments including but not limited to, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar. Students will attend 40 minutes of music enrichment, including multiple flat-footing sessions led by Alice Kexel, story-telling, visits from guest musicians, as well as learn about the heritage of the music and the region. They will have 40 minutes of group music classes, and 40 minutes of singing or JAM rehearsal.
Advanced students will have 40 minutes of group instrument lessons, followed by 30 minutes of advanced singing including harmony and shape-note singing, and finish with 50 minutes of coached, small-ensemble rehearsal.
Classes are $15/session, for a total of $210 for the first student, and a 20% discount of $168 for each additional sibling. Parents may choose to split payments when registering. Inquire with Julie Moore at [email protected] or 864-420-6407 about scholarships.

Growing Minds has published “I Tried Local…” a Toolkit for Engaging Kids with Local Food and Farms. This resource—intended for early care and education through second grade classrooms—offers an immersive curriculum designed around 10 crops grown in North Carolina. The print toolkit is currently available to educators in North Carolina who participate in a virtual training with Growing Minds. A free digital version is also available to anyone on the Growing Minds website.

For the fifth time in history, PBR’s (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour will buck into Greenville, South Carolina, returning to the Bon Secours Wellness Arena for the fourth consecutive season on Jan. 26-27, 2024, with PBR Greenville.
For two nights only, some of the best bull riders in the world will battle the sport’s rankest bovine athletes in the ultimate showdown of man vs. beast in one of the most exciting live sporting events to witness.
PBR’s return to Greenville comes on the spurs of one of the organization’s most dynamic individual seasons in 2023, as the Velocity Tour broke and reset numerous attendance and competition records en-route to its most successful season to date.
The upcoming PBR Greenville will mark the eighth event of the new individual season for the PBR’s expansion series. Eventgoers will watch on as riders vie for crucial points in the race to be crowned the 2024 PBR Velocity Tour Champion.
When PBR’s Velocity Tour was last in North Charleston in February 2023, Mauricio Moreira (Gaviao Peixoto, Brazil) rode supreme, delivering a 2-for-3 effort inside Bon Secours Wellness Arena to win PBR Greenville.
Moreira first put points on the board in Round 1 when he tied for the second-best score, marked 86.5 points atop Grinch (C Check Bucking Bulls). The charismatic Brazilian then surged to the event lead when he rode Chubs (J Bar W) for 82.5 points in the second round.
In the championship round, Moreira drew Gold Standard (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) as his final animal athlete opponent. While he was upended in 2.36 seconds, Moreira’s initial scores were enough to clinch the victory.
Moreira left The Palmetto State having earned a crucial 115.5 Velocity Global points.
The bull riding action for PBR Greenville begins with Round 1 at 7:45 p.m. ET on Friday, January 26, followed by Round 2 and the championship round at 6:45 p.m. ET on Saturday, January 27. All 40 competing bull riders will get on one bull each in Round 1. The Top 36 riders from Round 1 will advance to Round 2 Saturday evening. The riders’ individual two-round scores will be totaled with the Top 10 advancing to the championship round for one more out and a chance at the event title.
