Buncombe County’s Stay at Home Order Update Phase 1
May 18 @ 8:00 am – 5:30 pm
online

Buncombe County officials continue to take proactive steps to keep our community safe and healthy during the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.

To bring our community in closer alignment with Governor Cooper’s Executive Order 138, Buncombe County Public Health has issued a superseding Stay Home, Stay Safe Declaration that will go into effect at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2020 and will remain in effect until Friday, May 22, 2020 unless otherwise repealed, replaced, or rescinded and transitions to Phase 1 of slowly easing certain COVID-19 restrictions.

This order aligns us with Governor Cooper’s executive order with the sole exception of a continued restriction on Leisure Travel Booking. Buncombe County continues to restrict leisure travel bookings from outside of WNC. Lodging providers can now book rooms for residents of the 828 area code for leisure travel. We will be adopting the Governor’s Order together with his FAQ document specific to Executive Order 138.

If you have any questions about this new order, please reach out to our Ready Team Monday-Friday between 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Call  (828) 419-0095 or email [email protected].

Swannanoa Valley Museum and History Center Stories of the Snowbird Day School Online
May 18 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am
online

In this hour-long webinar, UNCA professor Trey Adcock will explore the history of the Snowbird Day School, a federally run school for Cherokee students in WNC, and discuss efforts to preserve the stories and experiences of the school’s former students.

The Snowbird Day School evolved from Quaker-led initiatives in the late 19th century to educate young Cherokee Indians living in Tuti yi, a Native community in Graham County, Western North Carolina. By the early 20th century, the school was administered by the federal government via the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and as with most federally-run schools for Native students, it sought to assimilate Indian youth into white, Anglophone culture. Over the course of nearly seven decades, an estimated 550 students attended the school before it was closed in 1963 due to federal desegregation efforts.

Trey Adcock, Associate Professor and Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies at UNC Asheville, will be presenting a publicly engaged project he has been working on entitled  ᏚᏗᏱᏧᎾᏕᎶᏆᏍᏗᎢ ᎤᏂᏃᎮᎸᏅᎢ (“Tuti Tsunadelogwasdi Uninohelv”) or Stories of the Snowbird Day School. This project seeks to preserve the historical artifacts, language and stories of the students who attended the school. Tuti yi, “Snowbird,” is one of the communities that make up the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Trey will provide an overview of the project, the materials collected and a historical overview of the school through photographs and oral histories.

About the Webinar: This webinar will take place via Zoom conference. Registrants will receive a link to the event several days beforehand. Use of Zoom is free and does not require an account for participation.

About History Cafe
Ever wonder how Asheville came to get its drinking water from Black Mountain? What slavery looked like in western North Carolina (Yes, there were enslaved people here.)? How wagons, stagecoaches, and trains made it up the steep grade from Old Fort into Ridgecrest? Come to the Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center one monday a month at 10:30am for a discussion about local history. Come start off your morning getting to know our region a little better!

Designed for adults and modeled after the popular Science Cafes taking place across the nation, Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center’s monthly History Cafe offers lectures and workshops led by local experts and researchers on regional history topics. The Blood Connection FREE COVID-19 Antibody Testing for Blood Donors
May 19 all-day
varies
The Blood Connection will now be offering FREE COVID-19 Antibody Testing. The COVID-19 Antibody Test will test a sample of each donor’s blood to see if it contains COVID-19 antibodies. This will be offered to TBC blood donors at all blood donation centers and mobiles across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia, at no cost. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment first, to maintain adequate social distancing.
Some important things to note:

· This is NOT a test to determine if the donor is infected with COVID-19. Positive test results do not confirm COVID-19 infection or immunity. A positive antibody result is indicative of the body’s immune response to COVID-19.

· This test is only available to those who complete a whole blood, platelet, or plasma donation where samples are successfully collected.

· The results of a COVID-19 Antibody Test will be posted on the donor’s TBC online portal in seven business days of their donation.

· More information about this testing: https://thebloodconnection.org/antibody-testing/

· Appointments can be made at thebloodconnection.org, click DONATE NOW.
