We are pleased to partner with UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program and English Department for this event, which will be held at in Lipinsky Auditorium on the UNCA campus.

Living and writing her speculative fiction in Brooklyn, Jemisin’s new novel features five New Yorkers who must come together to defend their city from ancient evil. She is the only author to win three Best Novel Hugo awards in a row, which she did for her Broken Earth trilogy. Jemisin also has won a Nebula Award and two Locus Awards among the many honors for her eight novels, a novella, and two short story collections. A former counseling psychologist and educator, she also covered science fiction for three years for the New York Times Book Review. The next Asheville Movie Guys screening will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 30, with a virtual discussion of Noah Baumbach’s Oscar-winning “Marriage Story.”

Everyone is welcome to watch the film on Netflix prior to the event, then join us for the discussion, which will take place via a Facebook Live video feed from the Asheville Movie Guys’ Facebook page. Bruce Steele and Edwin Arnaudin of Asheville Movies.com will do their usual post-screening discussion, including behind-the-scenes details on the making of the film, then open the (digital) floor for attendees to respond. Questions may be submitted by comment within Facebook or via email to [email protected].

There is no charge for this event. Patrons are encouraged to consider buying Fine Arts Theatre gift cards worth $5 or more at fineartstheatre.com to keep the theater afloat until it can reopen (when you can then cash in those gift cards), but no purchase is required.

The first 20 patrons who purchase a Fine Arts gift card and send a copy of their receipt to [email protected] by April 5 will receive a coupon for free popcorn. The coupon can be redeemed once the theater reopens, and will be honored through the end of 2020.
