Swannanoa’s Charles D. Owen Park: New children’s playground!
Feb 26 @ 8:00 am – 7:00 pm
Charles D. Owen

Over a period of several weeks in January, the old playground — which was very small and suitable only for young children — was removed and replaced with a large, state-of-the-art playground, complete with climbing walls, multiple slides, a 4-person seesaw, and much more. The colorful new playground equipment is designed for children ages 5-12, and makes quite a visual splash as you drive into Owen Park.
The upgraded playground is part of a series of improvements the county has made at Owen Park over the last couple of years, including the addition of a GaGa ball pit, outdoor exercise equipment, a musical “garden,” a wheelchair-accessible swing, and a TRACK Adventure Trail that teaches kids about the flora and fauna that can be found in the park.
Owen Park is located at 875 Warren Wilson Road (behind National Wiper Alliance). In addition to the amenities listed above, the park boasts several reservable picnic pavilions, a fishing pier, basketball courts, baseball fields, and a level, 1-mile walking path around the ponds. Owen Park is truly a gem in our community, and it keeps getting better all the time!

Asheville: We need your help! at the future Karen Cragnolin Park
Feb 27 all-day
future Karen Cragnolin Park

We’re looking for a team of dedicated volunteers to commit to monthly service days at the site of the future Karen Cragnolin Park. Volunteers will work outside at a safe social distance to remove invasive species. We will be working in groups of 15 or less and wearing masks to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

If you are interested in helping please fill out this survey (link below) so we can determine the best day and time to offer this monthly day of service.

Karen Cragnolin Park Update: We are delighted to report that the remediation of Karen Cragnolin Park (KCP) – named in honor of our visionary founder – is complete, and that we are initiating the first phase of the project by constructing the park’s greenway and an accompanying landscaped corridor. This will activate and connect the park (to the two adjacent greenways) and continue the journey of bringing the park fully online. Our goal with this phase is to create a beautiful aesthetic corridor with carefully selected plantings and design elements accompanied by educational, cultural and historical signage for people to experience as they move through the park. This phase is projected to cost approximately $1 million and will be achieved through individual donors and institutional and grant funding. Construction will begin when funding commitments are secured. To learn more about supporting our efforts please contact me at [email protected].

KC Park Greenway
Current plans for phase one with the installation of the new greenway.

As background, the 5.3 acre site was formerly home to the EDACO junkyard for over 50 years. Located adjacent to the French Broad River and bounded by Amboy Road, the car crushing operation contaminated the land and water with oil, gas, grease and antifreeze. RiverLink worked with experts to implement an extensive soil remediation process to restore the land.

Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architecture’s vision for KCP is bold and transformative. Upon full completion, KCP will serve as one of the missing links in the larger open space and greenway system, connecting Carrier Park to French Broad River Park. KCP will offer a contemplative and rejuvenating space that honors the natural and cultural history of the site while providing access to the water’s edge. The park will also stabilize riparian edges, collect and slow stormwater, and promote a wide range of habitats. The completed project will embrace the concept of a “living laboratory” – an outdoor classroom that makes the dynamic riparian and ecological processes visible. An educational, stimulating, and enjoyable park experience will cultivate a community invested in the long-term stewardship of the river and the park system for generations to come. Please see our website for the Master Plan and complete vision.

Parade and Queen’s Ball
Feb 27 @ 3:00 pm
South Slope Asheville

Parade and Queen’s Ball

This parade is our gift to the city, a zany, exuberant and irreverent downtown event in the dead of winter.

We invite residents to get together with friends, neighbors, and coworkers to create high-quality, surprising and entertaining entries, add upbeat music, and strut their stuff tossing those ubiquitous beads to the crowd. Zaniness, political satire, and amazing displays of populist art appreciated!

We love and respect our community, and Asheville is not Bourbon Street. Alcohol and nudity are not part of our twist on Mardi Gras in the mountains. We are promoting a fun, safe event for all ages – with a definite emphasis on FUN!

All are welcome to march or cheer on the marchers this February!

In conjunction with our loan of Félix González-Torres’ installation Untitled (L.A.) in Ruminations on Memory, join us for the cathartic experience of collaborative dance making and performing. The re-connect workshop is open to movers of all abilities and taps into our desire to connect with ourselves and others as a pathway to hope and healing. Facilitators guide participants through both written and movement prompts as part of the creative process to develop an original group dance piece. Participants are invited to perform the movement created in this workshop as part of the community event Reflect/Connect on March 12 at noon on the Museum’s plaza.

To ensure everyone’s safety, all attendees are required to provide proof of vaccination, or a negative lab-conducted COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours, and to be masked at all times inside the building.

For questions about the workshop prior to registration, contact Kathy Leiner at 828-215-2410 or [email protected]; for questions about the location or logistics, contact Kelly Baisley at [email protected] or 828-252-3227 ext 133.

Please note:

  • This workshop is held indoors in the Museum’s John & Robyn Horn Education Center.
  • Space is limited to small group.
  • Participants follow the Museum’s temporary COVID-19 safety precautions; click here for more information.

About the instructors:

  • Kathleen Meyers Leiner has been teaching, performing, and creating dance for 40 years, and draws inspiration from literature, social issues, and personal stories to develop workshops, performances, and participatory events. She is the Dance Program Director and Chair of Fine Arts at the Asheville School. Kathy holds a Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts: Choreography & Visual Arts from Wilson College.
  • Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre (ACDT) is a non-profit professional dance company created in 1979. We believe that everyone is a dancer and through art and inspiration, the company illuminates the points of intersection that exist on both intellectual and emotional levels, and our diverse repertory reflects both traditional and experimental forms of modern dance.

ADULT STUDIO

The Museum’s studio program for adults offers a core curriculum in drawing, painting, printmaking, and three-dimensional media, and also explores the intersections between them. Local and visiting artists help students of all levels and abilities develop skills in media that reflect techniques and themes featured in the Museum’s Collection and special exhibitions. Classes meet for 3–12 weeks, and are designed for anyone interested in exploring specific media in depth; daylong workshops introduce new media or processes. Please understand that if you show up on-site without registering first, you may be turned away so that the agency can maintain safety procedures.  Safety is our top priority and we want to be sure needs are met while also being safe. Hands On Asheville-Buncombe is not responsible for opportunities managed by partner agencies. If you are onsite at a volunteer opportunity and don’t feel safety guidelines are being followed, please connect with onsite project organizers and if not addressed, please let us know by completing our Volunteer Experience Form.

It can be ruff out there for our canine companions, but we have pawsitively great news. Buncombe County’s first-ever dog park is now open at our Sports Park in Candler. While this is a soft open, the park features two fenced-in play areas; one for large dogs and one for smaller pups. “We do have plans to add other amenities and water fountains,” exclaims Recreation Services Program Coordinator Mac Stanley. “People are very excited about this new opportunity. Since it was announced, we have gotten letters of support as well as many emails questioning when will the project be completed.”

So join us in a round of apaws as we celebrate the opening of this new venue for hot dogs and cool people. “It’s an amazing place to bring your dog to run free without a leash and interact with other dogs,” says Stanley. “One of my favorite aspects of this new dog park is being able to cultivate a community. Hopefully, this dog park will be instrumental in connecting dogs as well as people within the community.” Paw-yeah, sounds great.
