Calendar of Events

In the past 50 years in the United States and beyond, artists have sought to break down social and political hierarchies that include issues of identity, gender, power, race, authority, and authenticity. Unsurprisingly, these decades generated a reconsideration of the idea of pattern and decoration as a third option to figuration and abstraction in art. From 1972 to 1985, artists in the Pattern and Decoration movement worked to expand the visual vocabulary of contemporary art to include ethnically and culturally diverse options that eradicated the barriers between fine art and craft and questioned the dominant minimalist aesthetic. These artists did so by incorporating opulence and bold intricacies garnered from such wide-ranging inspirations as United States quilt-making and Islamic architecture. Too Much Is Just Right: The Legacy of Pattern and Decoration features more than 70 artworks in an array of media from both the original time frame of the Pattern and Decoration movement, as well as contemporary artworks created between 1985 and the present. The artworks in this exhibition demonstrate the vibrant and varied approaches to pattern and decoration in art. Artworks from the 21st century elucidate contemporary perspectives on the employment of pattern to inform visual vocabularies and investigations of diverse themes in the present day. Artworks drawn from the Asheville Art Museum’s Collection join select major loans and feature Pattern and Decoration artists Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, and Miriam Schapiro, as well as Anni Albers, Elizabeth Alexander, Sanford Biggers, Tawny Chatmon, Margaret Curtis, Mary Engel, Cathy Fussell, Samantha Hennekke, John Himmelfarb, Anne Lemanski, Rashaad Newsome, Peter Olson, Don Reitz, Sarah Sense, Billie Ruth Sudduth, Mickalene Thomas, Shoku Teruyama, Anna Valdez, Kehinde Wiley, and more. This exhibition is organized by the Asheville Art Museum and guest curated by Marilyn Laufer & Tom Butler.

• The Tuckasegee (tuck-uh-SEE-jee) River Excursion includes an 1 hour and 20 minute layover in the historic town of Dillsboro, where you’ll find more than 50 shops, restaurants, a brewery, and country inns. There is time to shop, snack, and visit the many unique shops before returning to Bryson City.

The Makers Market is a monthly market of art & design, featuring vendors and artisans selling housewares, vintage clothing, original art, handmade crafts, fair trade imports, and more – happening on the third Saturday of each month at Atelier Maison & Co.

Each month, inside and outside the showroom of Atelier Maison & Co. you’ll find a wide variety of different artists and makers at these craft markets. We host vendors displaying everything from textiles to woodwork, fresh farmed flowers, or hand-blown glass.
From noon-5 on the third Saturday of the month, each market has dozens of vendors and hundreds of shoppers throughout the spacious grounds. The markets have a welcoming feel, often with a food truck, craft workshops, or complimentary beverages and treats for the whole family.
With roots in the Asheville Design District, Atelier Maison & Co. is the area’s home furnishings destination offering healthy, design-forward furniture, accessories, and their own exclusive line of green, envy-worthy pieces. They believe living green is not only better for the environment but essential in building a happier, healthier home.

Ready to take your polymer clay skills to the next level? In this play-filled workshop, mixed media artist Robyn Crawford will take you deeper into this magical medium!

In just a few hours, you’ll learn how to create gradient color sheets, explore the Mokume Gane technique, and do some image transfers on clay! Then, Robyn will teach you how to turn your creations into jewelry, sculpture, mixed media works, buttons, and SO much more! It’s sure to be a fun day of claying around and getting creative!

Some experience with polymer clay basics preferred, but “confident beginners” are welcome to join as well!

Join us for this special program to help celebrate Black History Month. This concert features some wonderful works for violin, cello, and piano by some neglected black composers, including some fun ragtime arrangements by Scott Joplin; two Suites of Spiritual arrangements by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Undine Smith Moore; and Blues-inspired pieces by Florence Price and William Grant Still. This is music filled with the pain and anguish of an oppressed people, but also powerful melodies, inspirational themes, and an exciting rhythmic drive. The wonderful Borowsky siblings—Emmanuel on violin and Frances on cello—are back to perform these sadly neglected, but very soulful works of music.

This clever and inventive play “never goes more than a minute without a laugh” (Nerdist) giving you a new look at a familiar adventure from the perspective of three potential heroes just trying to make it through a magic school that proves to be very dangerous for children. Alongside them are the Puffs, a group of well-meaning, loyal outsiders with a thing for badgers “who are so lovable and relatable, you’ll leave the theater wishing they were in the stories all along” (Hollywood Life). Their “hilariously heartfelt!” (Metro) and epic journey takes the classic story to new places and reimagines what a boy wizard hero can be.

In this seminar we look into the fundamentals of bad habits and how to overcome them. How are habits formed, and how can they be changed? Many struggle with a variety of habits ranging from anger, lack of forgiveness, lust, addictions to substances, repetitive unhealthy thoughts and a host of other vices. In this seminar we look at scientific, health, and Biblical principles that aid in the victory over habits. Presented by Chad and Fadia Kreuzer. Chad and Fadia share seminars on health, the Bible, and overcoming habits. They have taught in Europe and throughout North America.

ABE LINCOLN AND UNCLE TOM IN THE WHITE HOUSE portrays a gripping re-imagination of the the events the night before Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Alone in the Executive Office, President Abraham Lincoln is struggling with signing the Emancipation Proclamation when he is mysteriously visited by Uncle Tom, the fictional character in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s abolitionist novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly. These two iconic characters from life and literature—one real, the other fiction—attempt to understand each other across a chasm of race in the midst of the Civil War. Throughout one late night and into the dawning day, they find themselves crossing over into each other’s world in a tale of suffering, self-discovery, and redemption.

Saturday, Feb 25, 2023: ASL-Interpreted Performance

The Magnetic Theatre is thrilled to kick off its 2023 Mainstage Season with HappyLand, a fun and fantastical new musical by Brayden Dickerson and Zach Knox of Asheville’s blues-fusion band Smooth Goose, featuring live tunes and an exciting ensemble of quirky characters.

This non-stop rock opera tells the tale of a delivery person who doesn’t quite fit into the titular town of HappyLand. Tasked with delivering one last package before the vacation they have been dreaming of, our bicycling box-bearer embarks on an epic journey through the barren Neither, where a host of unsavory characters contrives to stay this courier from their appointed rounds.  Nevertheless, our maudlin messenger is determined to make it to SadLand. But what will they find when they arrive? Could the addressee be the love of their life? What message does the all-important package contain? And can our hero deliver the earth from annihilation?

Directed by Jason Phillips and featuring an ensemble cast with rotating lead actors, HappyLand is a delightful extravaganza of song, silliness, dance, romance, and splendiferous space battles.

DEEP RIVER PLAYS THE EAGLES 20 GREATEST HITS !!!!!

DEEP RIVER , Asheville’s Premier Country Vocal Group, will pay homage to the Southern California band that started the country rock genre, the Eagles, by telling their story in words and songs, album-by-album, from their debut album in 1972 simply called ‘Eagles’ to their ‘Long Road Out Of Eden’ album in 2007.

The three women who front Deep River will perform all the vocals, and the Band will add a 3rd guitarist for a total of 7 pieces in order to create that iconic Eagles sound, and take the audience on an unforgettable American musical journey.

Celebrating 31 years of making music in 2023, Deep River is fronted by three women who sing all the lead and harmony vocals. All but one of our talented instrumentalists are also music instructors at the Asheville Music School.

Comedy legend and Emmy® Award-winning actor, Katt Williams, announces his “2023 and Me” tour is coming to Bon Secours Wellness Arena on February 18 performing an all-new show following the success of his “World War III” tour. Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m.
