Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) recently renovated fitness centers at Linwood Crump Shiloh and Stephens-Lee community centers – and community members can enjoy use of cardio equipment, exercise machines, free weights, open gym time, and more through June 30, 2023. During this time, APR will waive membership and daily pass fees so more people can access the necessities for a regular fitness routine. Locals can sign up online or at either community center to receive a fitness center key fob that can be scanned at either location.

 

“Our team is committed to creating spaces in which everyone feels welcome,” according to D. Tyrell McGirt, APR Director. “We are in the community building business. The gyms and fitness rooms at these two locations are filled with everything you’d expect from other top-notch fitness facilities and dedicated to body positivity and accessible wellness. Fruit trees are a home garden favorite, and it’s challenging to grow good fruit in our WNC environment. It helps to carefully select smaller, more disease-resistant varieties and consider more unusual fruit like Asian pears, sour cherries, mulberries and pawpaws. Our Presenter,Craig Mauney, is an Extension Area Specialized Agent for fruit production in our Western counties. He has years of experience growing small fruits in his own home landscape, and you’re sure to learn something new to help you grow those little gems of flavor.

Improv I: The Basics of Inspired Improvisation

This class will be offered in person on the ACT Mainstage, following all the recommended protocols for safety and sanitation. Limited to 10 students. For ages 18+.

This six-week course taught by local comedian Tom Chalmers covers the fundamentals of improvisational acting with an emphasis on comedy; such as listening, commitment, intuitive reaction, as well as recognizing and capitalizing on emerging patterns. A final showcase will be held on Friday, April 14th.

A Beginner’s Introduction to Tai Chi

This 9-week class will be an introduction to Basic Tai Chi Principles using the Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention Level I form. If you are new to Tai Chi this class is a perfect fit for you.

The Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention form was developed by Dr. Paul Lam, a family physician in Australia, and is endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control  and Prevention and the Arthritis Foundation. Tai Chi’s numerous evidence based health benefits will be included in class discussions.

The class will be taught by Patricia Gilliam, a certified instructor with the Tai Chi for Health Institute.

Attendees should plan to attend all nine classes, as each class builds on the previous one. The class is available for no charge, but space is limited. Registration is required. Please contact [email protected] with questions.

Improv III: The Performance Lab

PREREQUISITE: Improv 1 and Improv 2 (must be pre-approved by instructor)

The Performance Lab works with students to take the skills they have learned in the earlier levels and improve upon them by applying them to structures intended for performance. Students will be instructed on how to make “show-worthy” choices, choosing sustainable characters over quick-laugh caricatures, establishing relationships rather than just spouting punchlines, but at the same time developing instincts as to when a scene needs a spring or a solid blackout line. A final showcase will be held on Friday, April 14th.

Improv Level One: Communicate. Collaborate. Play

Enrollment is now open for two adult improvisation acting classes offered by Hendersonville Theatre (HT). Classes will be taught by professional improvisation actor and comedian Emily Swindal. Both classes are open to anyone over the age of 18, regardless of experience level.

Improv Level One: Communicate. Collaborate. Play. meets on Wednesdays from April 5 to May 24. Tuition is $180. In the class, students will work at getting comfortable on stage while having fun doing it. Students will learn to have compassion for themselves and their classmates as performers as they learn the fundamentals of improvisation and develop support and spontaneity. Together, they will learn the importance of “yes-and-ing,” heightening the absurdity and raising the stakes. They will also cover the differences between short form and long form improv. This is a short form class similar to Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike. Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. Performances are coordinated with and performed for audiences in non-traditional spaces such as homeless shelters, correctional facilities, community centers, low income senior centers and locations throughout rural Western North Carolina.  For schools, the Community Tour offers student workshops with teaching artists from the Ensemble.

The Community Tour also includes a series of ticketed performances for audiences at NC Stage.  Performances at NC Stage are staged in an intimate setting with all the lights on so our audiences may enjoy the performances as it is experienced at each tour location.
