On display daily January 18 – April 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the upstairs gallery of the Education Center, the Asheville Printmakers’ newest exhibit, Natural Impressions, will feature a variety of two- and three-dimensional print pieces utilizing numerous printmaking processes. Works will inspire visitors to think about the beauty and fragility of plants and the natural world through various perspectives and printmaking techniques. All pieces are available for purchase and a portion of the sales will benefit The North Carolina Arboretum Society.

Founded in 2013, the Asheville Printmakers is an energetic group of artists dedicated to expressing ideas and imagery through the medium of print. The group encompasses a wide range of processes and content, including traditional methods, such as lithography, woodcut and screen printing, and contemporary photographic printing processes, such as carbon printing, platinum-palladium and photopolymer etching.

There are no other admission charges required for visitors to access the Arboretum’s grounds and facilities during the day beyond the standard parking fees listed above.

The exhibit is on loan from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and has been supplemented with artifacts from the Smith-McDowell House collection. Entrance to the exhibit is included with Smith-McDowell House admission – and is always free for members – and runs through May 16, 2020.

The exhibit seeks to put the local men and women who served in context with the larger events happening in North Carolina, the United States, and the world. In the exhibit, visitors will find displays and interactive elements telling the stories of just a few of our hometown heroes.

Help manage invasive species and restore the native habitat. By clearing the invasive species, there may be potential for people to enjoy the close-to-town property. The goal is to get the lot clear enough for it to be used as a recreational space, like a picnic area.

Volunteers will need the ability to navigate uneven terrain, use tools such as loppers, pruners, hand saws, and three-pronged hoe. We will provide training for invasive species ID and proper removal of them. Tools and gloves will be provided.

It’s never too late to begin writing the next great American novel – or children’s book. The Leicester Library Creative Writing Work Group is opening its doors to any and all adults who are interested in writing children’s books. Meetings will include writing exercises, idea sharing, and other group discussions. The group will focus on writing picture books, early-reader, and chapter books. Participants are welcome to bring up to 500 words of original writing to share. But you don’t have to, you’re welcome to bring your thoughts to turn into great ideas later.

The classes take place on the first Thursday of every month at 1 p.m. at the Leicester Library. In previous groups, local children’s authors have visited to discuss their writing process. Also, members of the group have already published their own books.

Opening reception for its spring exhibition Emergence, featuring new and original works by three artists Alysia Fischer, Vicki Grant, and Ivy Jacobsen on Thursday, April 2^nd, from 5-8pm.  This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

As spring unfolds and bare winter branches give way to budding blooms, Momentum Gallery presents Emergence, a collection of recent works by three artists that reveals the magic and mystery of the season. Professor, artist, and anthropologist Alysia Fischer incises intricate leaf patterns into rubber innertubes, upcycling them into draping wall pieces and freestanding stitched sculptures that reference seed pods and chrysalides.  Vicki Grant’s architectural compositions of textured and painted porcelain integrate with actual seed pods, mineral specimens, and live-edge sections of wood evoking the surface of stone and tree bark.  The exhibition features new works from Grant’s ongoing Botanical, Windows to the Earth and Quilted Whimsey Series along with elongated cylindrical Spirit Sticks and the debut of the NC artist’s latest 16 x 16 inch wall sculptures, Woodland Harmonies, that sandwich Grant’s textural clay between spalted maple boards. Ivy Jacobsen’s moody and atmospheric paintings of trees, wildflowers, and hanging gardens offer an unexpected look at flora and the drama and beauty of her botanical subjects. Rendering space through layers of veiled elements, Jacobsen’s paintings evoke a sense of calm and wonder.

Emergence continues at the gallery’s 24 N Lexington Avenue location through May 2020.

Governor Roy Cooper ordered people in the state of North Carolina to stay at home for thirty days, until April 29, 2020, in another step to slow the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Governor Cooper’s Executive Order No. 121 takes effect on Monday, March 30 at 5:00 PM and reduces the size of gatherings to 10 people. The Order provides for essential businesses to continue to operate while prioritizing social distancing measures. The Order has the force of law and will be enforced in all 100 counties statewide.

“To continue our aggressive battle against COVID-19, I have signed a Stay at Home Order for the entire state of North Carolina. Though it is difficult we must do this to slow the disease spread,” said Governor Cooper. “We need our medical system to be able to care for the friends and family we know will become seriously ill from the virus.”

The Governor noted today that three North Carolinians have died due to COVID-19 and the state has 763 confirmed cases of the virus in 60 counties. He called on all North Carolinians to protect themselves by staying home and following social distancing guidelines. North Carolina is now considered to have widespread transmission of the virus, which means people who have tested positive cannot trace where they were exposed to the virus.

The Order directs people to stay at home except to visit essential businesses, to exercise outdoors or to help a family member. Specifically, the order bans gatherings of more than 10 people and directs everyone to physically stay at least six feet apart from others.

“I know this order may lead to even more hardship and heartache. Although we are physically apart, we must take this step together in spirit,” Governor Cooper said.

About Historic Fernihurst Mansion:
Fernihurst Mansion was constructed c1875 for Colonel John Kerr Connally atop Vernon Hill, the highest point in what was once the little town of Victoria. The giant 25-room Italianate-style home was built from bricks handmade from clay mined on the property. Over the next half century, the owners nearly doubled the size of the mansion until it became “a 50 room monstrosity” as one write remarked.  In 1933, the deserted monstrosity was acquired by John P. Curran, who removed 38 rooms and reverted the house back to its original structure. AB-Tech purchased the property in the 1970s and the mansion is now home to AB-Tech’s culinary institute.

Bill McKibben, one of America’s best known advocates for action on climate change, will give a lecture, Our Changing Climate: A Global Movement of Reform, at UNC Asheville’s Kimmel Arena at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 2. This talk is free and open to everyone – no tickets needed – with support from The David and Lin Brown Visionary Lecture Series and The Ecology Wildlife Foundation Fund.

McKibben is widely credited with having authored the first book on global warming written for a general audience – published in 1989, The End of Nature was written with the hope and expectation that simply and clearly stating the problem, then called the “greenhouse effect,” would lead to corrective action. And in the succeeding three decades, McKibben has continued to write, speak out, and organize mass actions around the world. He is a founder of 350.org, an international movement “working to end the age of fossil fuels and build a world of community-led renewable energy.”

Last year, McKibben published a new book, Falter: Has the Human Game Begun to Play Itself Out? “In a way, Falter is a summing up after three decades of where we are … we haven’t done very much in those 30 years,” said McKibben in an interview with the Sierra Club’s national magazine. “As a result, what was an abstract and theoretical threat is now daily reality for people all over the world. … I now have amazing colleagues around the planet [at 350.org] – most of them in places that did nothing to cause this problem, but all of them nonetheless engaged in the fight. I find that endlessly inspiring.”

McKibben, the Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, has earned many prestigious awards. He won the Right Livelihood Award in 2014, and was the 2013 winner of the Gandhi Peace Prize Award and the Thomas Merton Prize; he holds honorary degrees from 18 colleges and universities. Foreign Policy named him to their inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers, and The Boston Globe said he was “probably America’s most important environmentalist.”

McKibben also has been a leader in the movement to divest from fossil fuel industries, which has recently gained some momentum. His report, Money is the Oxygen On Which the Fire of Global Warming Burns, was published last year in The New Yorker, and when BlackRock, the world’s biggest asset manager, announced in January 2020 that it would withdraw from investments that “present a high sustainability-related risk,” McKibben called it “a remarkable breakthrough.”

He also said that BlackRock’s move was too limited and called for pushing them further, “but at least we’ve reached the point that [BlackRock] realized they have a role in dealing with the climate crisis,” he told The Guardian. “I don’t think the big oil companies are capable of changing, though I’d like to be proved wrong. The job is basically to starve them and reduce their ability to continue expanding.”

Last year, UNC Asheville took the step of using ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) criteria for 10% of its endowed funds. This move, approved in June 2019 by the University’s Board of Trustees, followed a multi-year effort initiated by UNC Asheville student leaders, including members of the UNCA Divest activist group.
