“What Ibsen did so brilliantly was create very complex human beings on the stage that could be seemingly contradictory,” says Snook. “And we’re creating some moments of transition between the acts that will be different from some other Hedda Gablers. We’re not changing the script, but using the spaces in the play itself to tell a little bit more of her story.”

Registration is open for UNC Asheville’s 2020 Pi(e) Run, an annual fun run that celebrates all things Pi(e). This year’s event will be held on Pi Day, Saturday, March 14, at Pi time, 3:14 p.m. Runners will run 3.14 miles around UNC Asheville’s campus and celebrate with pie at the finish line. The event is open to the public with an early-bird rate of $15 before Feb. 15. Runners who sign up before March 1 will receive a t-shirt and swag bag, and registration continues through March 14 at a cost of $20, with on-site registration and check-in starting at 2 p.m. the day of the race. The 2020 Pi Day Run will start from UNC Asheville’s Quad and circle University Heights three times, via campus sidewalks, concluding with pie at the finish line. The fun run includes a pie baking contest, judged by Math Leaders from the Marvelous Math Club, with prizes awarded, and this year will feature a raffle. Registration includes a raffle entry for each runner. Registration also is available for the pie contest, without the run, by filling out the interest form at unca.edu/pi-run.

Proceeds from the annual Pi(e) Run will benefit the Asheville Initiative for Math at UNC Asheville and its Marvelous Math Club at Pisgah View Community Center. Marvelous Math Club is a partnership between UNC Asheville, Asheville Housing Authority, and Asheville City Schools. The Club uses math as a catalyst to build leadership skills, create community and provide a space for individualized academic support and social-emotional growth.

The Fantasticks is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, and their two fathers who try to keep them apart. The narrator, El Gallo, asks the audience to use their imagination and follow him into a world of moonlight and magic. The lovers fall in love, grow apart and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo’s words that, “without a hurt, the heart is hollow.” The story is punctuated by a series of catchy, memorable songs, many of which have become classics.

The Fantasticks is directed by Mark Jones with music direction by Rob Blackwell and choreography by Jessica Garland Lowe. Coincidentally, Mark appeared onstage in ACT’s 1998 production of The Fantasticks!

“It’s been about 20 years since I played Matt on the ACT stage. I was a young, inexperienced actor, and person, at that time,” Mark said. “But now I am able to revisit the show with much more experience and maturity. I know much more about love, loss and heartbreak than I did at the age of 24.

Want to learn about Stonewall Sports, stay active during winter, and meet new people? Dodge, duck, dip, and dive (best described as a party on the dodgeball court) at Stephens Lee Recreation Center in downtown Asheville. Your rise to dodgeball superstardom begins on Sundays through March 15 (except February 2). Come as an individual, small group, or full team of 12-15 dodgers. Join every week or only when you can!

Remember the hard rubber you got pummeled with during recess? We don’t use those. We use soft-centered balls to keep the hard impacts and injuries to a minimum. Balls start flying at 3:45 p.m. Sweat bands encouraged!

There is no charge for this community event that is open to all adults 21 and older. Stonewall Sports is a low-cost, high FUN adult recreational and philanthropic nonprofit organization for members of the LGBTQAI+ community and allies.

 When bassist Mike Holstein and drummer Justin Watts teamed up with the pianist Dr. William Bares, they created a working jazz piano trio, creating a new musical concept, blurring the lines between art and entertainment, structure and spontaneity. They are quintessentially, artistically Ashevillian.

The Cathedral of All Souls, located in Biltmore Village, has a long history of nourishing and supporting the arts. During Lent, we invite the public to attend a series public concerts, featuring local master-class musicians and singers. Each Sunday, we will host a concert from 4 to 6 p.m. in our Sanctuary. We suggest a donation of $10, the proceeds of which will be given directly to the musicians.

 

The Merrell Adventure Dash is all about getting outside and challenging yourself to work hard for your good time. Suitable for families as well as adults, participants will negotiate a series of natural and man-made obstacles along the 5K course, including balance components, climbs and nets, a river-run, and raft crossing. This holiday weekend, enjoy a fun, family-friendly adventure run in the beautiful Nantahala Gorge. Merrell Adventure Dash participants can choose between the 5K dash or a 1K fun run. Kids aged 12 and under race free with a participating adult.

All pieces are available for purchase and a portion of the sales will benefit The North Carolina Arboretum Society.

Founded in 2013, the Asheville Printmakers is an energetic group of artists dedicated to expressing ideas and imagery through the medium of print. The group encompasses a wide range of processes and content, including traditional methods, such as lithography, woodcut and screen printing, and contemporary photographic printing processes, such as carbon printing, platinum-palladium and photopolymer etching.

Elodia Castillo and Roderico Y. Diaz, two Mayan leaders from Guatemala, will speak and present photographs at noon on Tuesday, March 3, in Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum. This event is free and open to everyone.

Elodia Castillo Vasquez, Maya Ch’orti’ indigenous authority and president of COMUNDICH (Coordinadora de Asociaciones y Comunidades para el Desarrollo Integral del Pueblo Ch’orti’ – Network of Associations and Communities for Integral Development for the Ch’orti’ People) will speak about her work as an indigenous leader to recover ancestral territory under the threats of a militarized state and the effects of the recent state of siege in Guatemala.

Maya Kaqchikel photojournalist Roderico Y. Diaz will present his photography and discuss the current political situation in Guatemala under the US policy, Alliance for Prosperity and the US “third safe country” agreement.

UNC Asheville Assistant Professor of Spanish Juan Sánchez Martinez, who is coordinating these events, also will host a Maya invocation and collective painting, “In Memoriam Berta Cáceres, Lenca leader, water protector. Berta vive!” 10-11:45 a.m. on the Quad (rain location is Highsmith Student Union, Mountain Suites); all are welcome.

These events, says Sánchez Martinez, “is an opportunity for students and community members to learn more about the current human rights situation in Guatemala, the U.S. policy role, and how communities are organizing to combat environmental destruction and displacement. We will also hear about solidarity and what we can do to promote human-centered US economic and political policies towards Guatemala.”

Catch encore performances of the First Mondays series with Chamber Music Tuesdays in March, April, and May! These concerts are possible thanks to a collaboration between the Brevard Music Center and the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra.

Chamber Music Tuesdays are held monthly, March through May, at 12:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Hendersonville. Free and open to the public, and no tickets required.
