Advocate for Children in Need: Become a Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Today!
Feb 27 all-day
Guardian ad Litem

Could you be a Voice for a Child?
A Guardian ad Litem (GAL) advocate is a trained community volunteer who is appointed, along with a Guardian ad Litem attorney, by a district court judge to investigate and determine the needs of abused and neglected children petitioned into the court system by the Department of Social Services. Their role is mandated by North Carolina General Statute 7B-601. Throughout North Carolina, the Guardian ad Litem Program seeks to serve the best interests of thousands of children who find themselves the subjects of court cases by assigning them Guardian ad Litem volunteers. Our program exists in every county throughout the state, and with the help of more than 5,300 volunteers, we serve more than 18,000 children a year.
The GAL volunteer’s primary responsibilities include:

Digging for details in the case
Collaborating with other participants in the case
Recommending what’s best for a child by writing court reports
Empowering the child’s voice
Staying vigilant by constantly monitoring the case
Keeping all information confidential
The main qualification for becoming a GAL is to have a sincere concern for the well-being of children. There are no education or experience requirements.

Helping Hands-Volunteer Opportunity-kudzu removal
Mar 5 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Reed Creek Greenway

Join in kudzu removal initiatives along the Reed Creek Greenway. The first workshop of 2023 is “Weaving Birdhouses With Kudzu Vines” Learn to identify kudzu vines when the leaves are dormant; Harvest old-growth vines and runner vines for bird houses, basketry, woven fencing, and wreath making; hot kudzu root tea samples will be served.
## What problems does kudzu cause?
An invasive plant as fast-growing as kudzu outcompetes everything from native grasses to fully mature trees by shading them from the sunlight they need to photosynthesize. This loss of native plants harms other plants, insects and animals that adapted alongside them, leading to cascading effects throughout an ecosystem.
Over time, these effects of habitat loss can lead to species extinctions and a loss of overall biodiversity.

MALEVO
Mar 5 @ 7:00 pm
Peace Center--Gunter Theatre

MALEVO – the “South American Sensation” – is a thrilling all-male group specializing in Malambo, a traditional Argentine folk dance of great virility and dexterity. The troupe takes the form beyond its limits with a modern, avant-garde and transgressive approach, while still staying true to the cultural foundations of this traditional gaucho artform. Bringing live music and virtuosic dancing to the contemporary stage, this performance is exhilarating, engaging and perfect for the entire family.

MALEVO has been named the “Cultural Ambassador to the National Identity of Argentina,” and is on the tail of numerous successes including events and performances in Las Vegas, New York, Dubai, Paris, Cairo, St. Petersburg and Montreal. The America’s Got Talent semi-finalists have performed alongside Latin pop-star Ricky Martin, Cirque du Soleil, and had a year-long performance season at Universal Studios Osaka, Japan. Now, MALEVO is excited to present a new touring performance created for theaters and festivals.

Introduction to Flatfooting
Mar 11 @ 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Community/Education Room in Black Mountain Public Library

Flatfooting is a low, close-to-the floor style of dance that focuses on making rhythms that go along with the music, usually an old-time dance tune. It’s really all about the sound, and most flatfooters don’t do anything fancy with their arms. Participants will learn how to do basic flatfoot moves in this workshop while learning the history of one of Appalachia’s deepest rooted dance forms and hearing personal anecdotes about other traditional Appalachian dancers that Rodney has had the pleasure of encountering throughout his journey.

About Rodney Sutton: Rodney Clay Sutton is a dance performer and teacher of Appalachian step dance – both flatfoot and clogging. He calls square dances and contra dances, and is a storyteller and ballad singer. Rodney offers workshops, lectures, and demonstrations catered for a range of age groups, including youth, seniors, and corporate gatherings. He is also a concert and festival producer, emcee, and stage manager. In 2019, Rodney was one of 9 folks selected to receive a first ever Folk & Traditional Arts Master Artist Fellowship from South Arts. He was able to use the monies to go to Ireland for a month in September of 2019 to study Sean Nos` dance – the Irish step-dance equivalent to flat-footing.
