Book Club: Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Dec 6 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Zillicoah Beer Co.
November/Dec Book Club: Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Details

For our next book club, we decided on Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. A couple members had read it already and highly recommended it. It is a dystopian science ficiton novel released in 2005, and was also adapted into a film in 2010 starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield.

According to Goodreads:

Hailsham seems like a pleasant English boarding school, far from the influences of the city. Its students are well tended and supported, trained in art and literature, and become just the sort of people the world wants them to be. But, curiously, they are taught nothing of the outside world and are allowed little contact with it.

Within the grounds of Hailsham, Kathy grows from schoolgirl to young woman, but it’s only when she and her friends Ruth and Tommy leave the safe grounds of the school (as they always knew they would) that they realize the full truth of what Hailsham is.

Never Let Me Go breaks through the boundaries of the literary novel. It is a gripping mystery, a beautiful love story, and also a scathing critique of human arrogance and a moral examination of how we treat the vulnerable and different in our society. In exploring the themes of memory and the impact of the past, Ishiguro takes on the idea of a possible future to create his most moving and powerful book to date.

Bland Simpson, the celebrated bard of North Carolina’s sound country, has blended history, observation of nature, and personal narrative in many books to chronicle the people and places of eastern Carolina. Yet he has spent much of his life in the state’s Piedmont, with regular travels into its western mountains. Here, for the first time, Simpson brings his distinctive voice and way of seeing to bear on the entirety of his home state, combining storytelling and travelogue to create a portrait of the Old North State with care and humor.

Three of the state’s finest photographers come along to guide the journey: Simpson’s wife and creative partner, Ann Cary Simpson, professional photographer Scott Taylor, and writer and naturalist Tom Earnhardt. Their photos, combined with Simpson’s rich narrative, will inspire readers to consider not only what North Carolina has been and what it is but also what we hope it will be. This book belongs on the shelf of longtime residents, newcomers, and visitors alike.

Bland Simpson is Kenan Distinguished Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also pianist for The Red Clay Ramblers, the Tony Award-winning string band. In 2005 he received the North Carolina Award, the state’s highest civilian honor.

Ann Cary Simpson, photographer, served for thirty years at national and North Carolina environmental organizations and UNC’s School of Government. She now is a senior associate with moss + ross strategic consulting.

Tom Earnhardt, photographer, is the renowned host-writer-director of the long-running PBS North Carolina show Exploring North Carolina. He was a professor of law at North Carolina Central University and is author of North Carolina: Crossroads of the Natural World.

As you know I’ve been connected to a group of light beings. When I first started sharing, it was just important to share the frequency as there were no words.

Now there are words accompanying the energy. The words are guidance and teachings.

When others resonate this frequency gets stronger for everyone. Therefore when we meet as a group there can be an exponential shift. This shift has a ripple effect and can be felt around the world.

I will be starting a small in person group that will meet the first and third Monday of each month from 6:30 to 8:00. The space will be limited to 6 to 8 people.

There will be singing bowls and the opportunity for people to ask questions. Please bring your questions and make your questions succinct.

You must register and can do so without a donation. There will be an opportunity at the end of the meeting if you would like to donate.

You Are Here by Thich Nhat Hanh Discussion

You Are Here: Discovering the Magic of the Present Moment by Thich Nhat Hanh was published in 2010. This book has a 5 star rating with 1560 reviews. We will discuss this book during an online zoom call. This book is available in print, audio, and Kindle formats. Use this link to purchase https://tinyurl.com/brubf48j

Description of the book: Cut through the busyness and anxieties of daily life to discover the simple happiness of living in the present moment, as taught by a world-renowned Zen monk

In this book, Thich Nhat Hanh—Zen monk, author, and meditation master—distills the essence of Buddhist thought and practice, emphasizing the power of mindfulness to transform our lives. But true mindfulness, Hanh explains, is not an escape. It is being in the present moment, totally alive and free.

Based on a retreat that Thich Nhat Hanh led for Westerners, You Are Here offers a range of effective practices for cultivating mindfulness and staying in the present moment—including awareness of breathing and walking, deep listening, and skillful speech. These teachings will empower you to witness the wonder of life and transform your suffering, both within and outside you, into compassion, tenderness, and peace. As Thich Nhat Hanh declares, “the energy of mindfulness is the energy of the Buddha, and it can be produced by anybody.” It is as simple as breathing in and breathing out.

CAROLINA CELTIC - Dec 6: Celtic Christmas Celebration

The award-winning Celtic duo of harpist Sue Richards and guitarist Robin Bullock, in partnership with White Horse Black Mountain, are proud to present CAROLINA CELTIC, a monthly concert series in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Carolina Celtic showcases Irish and Scottish musical traditions and explores their commonality with the Appalachian ballads and stories of the Carolina mountains.

The concerts take place at White Horse Black Mountain (details and contact info below) the second Monday of every month at 7:30 pm ET. Every month Sue and Robin collaborate with a different guest artist, ensuring that no two Carolina Celtic concerts are the same. The inaugural season’s lineup of world-class musical guests is nothing short of extraordinary.

This edition is a special CELTIC CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION with RONN McFARLANE AND CAROLYN SURRICK, Grammy-nominated lutenist and viola da gambist from the Baltimore Consort and Ensemble Galilei.

Host duo Sue Richards and Robin Bullock, both proud transplants to the North Carolina mountains, blend the ancient and magical tones of the Celtic harp with the powerful resonance of the steel-string guitar, cittern and mandolin to create music that’s beautiful and timeless, yet fresh and current. Their individual achievements speak for themselves, with (among many other accomplishments) Sue Richards being a four-time National Scottish Harp Champion and Robin Bullock being ranked among the “100 Greatest Acoustic Guitarists” by DigitalDreamDoor.com and a longtime touring sideman with Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award winner Tom Paxton. The magic of their combined artistic excellence and mastery of Celtic traditions is captured on their brilliant 2018 duo CD Highland Ramble, and they eagerly look forward to the many collaborations to come as part of the Carolina Celtic series.

Buncombe County Extends Indoor Mask Mandate to Jan. 4, 2022
Dec 7 all-day
Buncombe County
The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners has extended the county-wide face covering requirement for all indoor public spaces through Jan. 3, 2022. The indoor mask requirement also extends to Asheville, Biltmore Forest, Black Mountain, Montreat, Weaverville, and Woodfin.
In Buncombe County, COVID-19 case rates continue to be high, and per the CDC definition, the County remains an area of high transmission. The percent positivity remains in the moderate category, and the death rate remains in the substantial category.

“Unfortunately, COVID-19 cases continue to increase after a high level plateau. The percent positivity is now consistently above 5% again, and we are likely to see a further increase after the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Public Health Director Stacie Saunders. “Transitioning to living with COVID-19 means doing what we can now to reduce transmission and burden of new infections. Our goal is to dampen as much as possible any surge we may see during this holiday season with the hope of achieving decreasing case rate and spread as we enter the new year.”
